WDW Hollywood Studios: General Discussion

Oh?

Big Thunder Mountain - better in Paris
Tower of Terror - better in Paris
Pirates of the Caribbean - better in Paris
Phantom Manor/Haunted Mansion - better in Paris

In my view, anyway. :)
Tower of Terror is a controversial one. I love ToT in Paris but the original is a masterpiece.
Although I havn't been since Paris added the new stories.

I won't disagree with the others, but I will note that they all opened with the park.

Although given Universal Orlando opened about the same time and the only original attraction left is ET it isn’t that surprising either.

Indeed, for the most part I’d say it’s different than in the UK bus their attractions are tied to IP/Films which themselves become dated.

However with unique IP in the UK I’d say that’s not the case. I.e. Nemesis as a brand wasn’t dated, that was the issue that people stopped caring. Quite the opposite, I think its enduring nature strengthened the brand.

In the US however people hadn’t seen a new film for decades and its relevance to pop culture had wained. Also the majority of the time, what was replaced was 9/10 better than the original. Which in the UK is often not the case (Toyland tours, ride removals, Ug Land removal) and Alton in particular hasn’t overall increased its total rides now in a considerable length of time.

Not sure if it’s related to Hollywood Studios specifically, but it (was) attached to the park so I guess it’s relevant.

Disney have just announced what’s going into the space occupied by the acclaimed Galactic Starcruiser themed hotel/LARP thing. It’s going to be turned into… offices for Walt Disney Imagineering.

Money well spent IMO.

Please sit in your windowless cell and work, theresatiny bunk bed if you want a lie down. please do not leave your room you will only be surrounded by expensive failure.

It could be partially ip, with rides like back to the future. but you also have to remember universal are running these rides at their maximum capacity for like 12 hours 7 days a week for the whole year, this leads to much higher wear.

A lot of the rides are worn out by like 25 years, it was when Hulk was retracked, dragons went, and much more. They all go through an insane number of trains, the theoretical max number of trains for hagrids is 12 (although it normally opperates with like 10 as it is too unreliable with more) all of them are constantly moving, that is a lot of wear.

You can compare it to disney but a lot of their rides (especially older rides) are more simple and lower force (take big thunder mountain) and also under go retracking effort as we are seeing with big thunder mountain.

Tbh I am quite surprised that Disney have kept areosmith it is getting quite unreliable going down for months at a time frequently for "refurbishment".

I am happy it isn't getting turned into avengers and hopefully they will choose to turn the cars thing next to it into a new muppet vision, but they are still only using IP which is something disney aren't doing well as a lot of it just feels like some manager said "x IP is popular add it to a park" and it was crammed in where it dosnt fit, some of disneys best stuff have been the non/loosely based IP themes, everest, space mountain, big thunder, pirates of the carabean, haunted mansion and so much more

The most recent long spells of downtime for rock n roller (start of 2023 and 2024 where it was closed for multi month refurb was to address the issues rather than it being directly caused by issues. I believe it has involved electric/sensors replacements and the launch system which was causing the most issues was replaced in last years lengthy refurb.

I guess but I recall hearing similar things the last couple times it has went down, it also is like a 26 year old vekoma space mountain at DLP is only like 4 years older and as they have been constantly run with not much retracking I think they are getting quite rough.

Wow, I saw that on reddit and thought it was a fan-made mockup. Thrilled that it's the real deal, and it seems like a good thing that it took them 25 years to finally build this ride as Vekoma can use what they learned with F.L.Y. here*. I'm biased as Monsters Inc. is my favourite Pixar film of all time but I have a feeling this will be the best Disney coaster on the planet. I know there's always a chance that they could mess this up--this is the company that somehow made a boring, slow-paced Spider-Man ride--but if they're putting this much effort into the scale of the loading area then it seems like a very positive signal.

*If you watch the full video you can see that loading is done similar to F.L.Y. where the seats face outwards towards the loading gates, and then spin forward at the top of the lift. Since this is Disney you can assume it won't be an extremely intense experience, which makes me wonder if the seats will spin at calmer points during the ride itself similar to Europa Park's Arthur. Suspended coasters aren't the best for storytelling but if the seats can spin to face outwards then effectively every row has an unobstructed view, at least for the story elements.

I'm hoping that Disney will not neglect the theming in favour of the infrastructure. They have the budget to do both, but they do sometimes fall short, albeit mainly on dark rides.

Rides such as Monsters Inc at Tokyo. In terms of rollercoasters, I've never been on it, but Cosmic Rewind looks like it could fit the bill.
Cosmic rewind is an excellent ride. Having been on cosmic rewind a number of times it’s one of Disney's world’s best rides and certainly in my top 5. I understand it also one of Disney world’s top rated rides, and is regular ranked as guests favourite.

I haven't been on Cosmic Rewind, I'm sure it's a good time in the way that any spinning coaster in the dark with a classic pop song blaring would be a good time, but I will never respect it simply for the fact that it cost $300,000,000 and has a total of 0 animatronics anywhere. In the triumphant final scene you ride by a "hologram" which is basically just a glass screen with a projection on it.

I do think Disney especially should be held to a higher standard with their theming. Put another way, "this ride is just a bunch of screens showing movie characters in the dark" was the complaint so many people made about Universal for years and years. It's not that those rides can't be fun, it's that--to me, anyway--they're always going to be a step below the classic physical Disney rides.
