Wicker Man - General Discussion - Part Two

Just thinking out loud but isn't the disabled row the one nearest to the disabled entrance. Back for Nemesis and Wicker Man which is nearest to the exit gate, front for Air by wheelchair entrance, front for Oblivion nearest to exit gate?

They tended to put people on the back row because its closest to the bottom of the lift hill and the first one unloaded.

However recent changes to RAP mean it's pot luck as to whether this happens or not now, especially at Thorpe where you go to the fast track entrance now, rather than the exit on most coasters.

No it isn’t actually, it’s row 7 if VR is not running and if it is it’s row 7 for VR or Row 4 for no VR. That’s what we had when we went in August anyway :)
It will probably be row 7 always now, as VR has been completely removed.

Air /galactica RAP non vr is row 4 vr is row 7.

How have we got onto this in the WM thread?

Something I’ve been trying to figure out but can’t how do the hosts know when to dispatch, they don’t do the normal thumbs up.

There's an enable panel on both sides of the platform. The hosts walk down checking the lapbars and then when they get to the back they wait until the other host has also completed their checks. They both then press their button which allows the operator to dispatch. I'm surprised they don't have to do a thumbs up as well though.

According to a friend that worked at Thorpe, the thumbs up was a "procedural change" that was bought in after the Smiler crash "to reassure the general public our operations are safe", the person in the control room can tell if the buttons on the platform are being pressed or not, and it was all for show to reassure Joe public, like the short lived "your belt is secure, enjoy your ride" saying the hosts were made to say continuously for a short period after they'd checked your harness.

Depends on the ride maybe, but that definitely isn't true for Nemesis, Air, Oblivion and countless others... the order of the thumbs up is set in the Code of Safe Working Practice to ensure all hosts are ready as they don't all have a pushbutton. They've been doing thumbs up at Alton Towers for decades, certainly long before the Smiler crash.

WM has 2 on the floor and both have agree/safe point buttons. So if these are set as agree buttons then dispatch can't happen without all being activated.

Meaning thumbs up are just show. And i wonder if they would fit the story?

WM is unusual because all hosts have an enabling button. That's not true for other coasters at the park.

However I'm surprised they don't need to do a thumbs up because if there were three people on the platform, how do you know they're all ready and in a safe location? This is not an unusual scenario. It would happen when training new hosts, for instance.

I'll also add that it's a double positive thing, Skyway at Chessie the platformer needed to both press the dispatch button AND put thumb up so the operator (on off-load side) could see that it wasn't pressed in error/something else may have come up...

When it's not done correctly then there's equally as much danger for staff than guests...
