Towers is Tired and Run Down

I think it is plain and simply that the park just appears unloved and uncared for by the people running it. There is no pride. Year on year we see theming removed and never replaced (rapids station this year) they are usually just little things but over time just gives the feeling you are in a place that has lost its sparkle. The fact most of the park is overgrown and frankly just grubby does nothing to help.

We scarcely see anything done to improve and enhance the quality of the park environment, any 'improvements' that take place are because they are directly involved with raising revenue or H&S related, so we see upgrade retail and F&B outlets all the time (but even these usually result in something pretty sterile) and pointless fences stuck around the gardens but rarely anything that will actually improve the quality of the park.

When they do stick their finger out and do anything it usually looks nasty and garish but is lauded because people are just glad they have done something....see Splash Landings, X-Sector and even CBeebies to be frank. All evidence the park or company has run out of creative steam/doesn't employ talented designers/has a shoestring budget.

The biggest issue though is how ad-hoc and incoherent the park has become in terms of themed areas over the last decade or so- Air isolated down the far end of FV, Spinball stuck next to entrance, Rita dumped in Ug Land, The Smiler shoehorned into X-Sector...and these are just the big attractions never mind Charlie and all the other bits of junk inflicted on the place by various management since around 2003/4. There are precious few areas of the park that are genuinely immersive or exciting except for around Nemesis, Hex and in Katanga Canyon.

Then there's the sheer amount of pure cr*p clogging up the park. Completely themeless and irrelevant games stalls and machines around every corner, cheap and ugly signage up all over the place and the masses of overpriced tat they sell in the shops that could be brought in most high streets for half the price. I can walk through pretty much every retail outlet on park and see almost nothing I want to buy.

Alton Towers has become all about headline grabbing rides (quite literally this year) with too much emphasis on marketing over actual quality and has lost most of the nuance that is needed for a genuinely good theme park. As such I have little desire to return anytime in the near future.

This sums up what has happened to Towers over the past 10+ years for me. Brilliant post.

When you've been on forums for 10 years, you give up on real meaningful change - even if some people at Towers care.

Those that have been around a while will know i've made my fair share of posts along these lines over the years - to the degree where we had a reply from Mr. Varney once.

Merlin are interested, principally, in profit - which is why none of their parks look as good as they could.

The main reason I continue to visit is that, regrettably, consumer choice is limited in the UK and they're the best we have.

:)

You also have to pick your battles. Which is why Air's redevelopment irks me as it's not immediately in a poor state. For me, the following areas at Alton are very poor:

- The Flume. This ride needs a complete overhaul by the manufacturer and re theming. However it's been like this for years.

- Dark Forest. Beyond a joke. Cheap and tatty with no real structure to the area.

- Entrance Plaza. It shocks me how dated this is!!

Air 's tunnel... Yes. Needs work done. Doesn't really need anything done to the rest of the ride though.

How about the Duel gravestone outside the entrance, the zombie crawling out from underneath it basically now just a lump of broken sponge with no face. The zombie with the gun has fingers missing and is in a bit of a state. Noticed this on Saturday.

The fact that towers let the park fall into this state is really sad. With every new coaster, every other ride gets neglected an they focus solely on threat ride when they should be focussing on the park as a whole.

Also, continuously getting rid of flats and not replacing them with anything. The first time I went (2002 I think) the offering was a lot better and was just a better day out. Dynamo, boneshaker, submission... All gone and replaced by nothing.

Don't even get me started on ug land. Was the best area of the park.

The only rides that have run without problem today are all cbeebiesland, nemesis, ripsaw, blade, rapids and flume.

Ripsaw was down around 12:30ish as someone had smashed one of the lights - I'm guessing it was pure accident and one of the ones that face the riders for when its dark. Although thats not Ripsaws fault. ;)

Dark Forest. Beyond a joke. Cheap and tatty with no real structure to the area.

What makes it worse is there is no sign whatsoever of Rita's crappy scaffolding being removed as they have now added metal 'fencing' around the support/rock structure in the middle of the tunnel. Sigh!

I have commented before on what they could do with the escapee from bob the builder land. I think a few signs about escaping the dark forrest would strengthen the link of rita with DF

I also noticed in the "Dark Forest" they have done more tree felling, so its more of the "quite light in places and not overly dark" forest now.

It was the first thing I noticed in Gloomy Wood too, the orange foam catches your eye. It's just disgraceful the theming is completely abandoned like this.

The park is just depressing in places at the moment.

Ug Forest has been a mess ever since Rita moved in, Nemesis is covered in mould, X-Sector is in a state of limbo, and the Flume is on its last legs.

The last time I remember the park being in such a state was back in 2003/2004, which was the point where I decided to stop visiting as often.

The place is in need of a complete overhaul.

God that video brought a tear to my eye. Beautiful!

Some things stand out from it though:

1) people back then were a lot more easily pleased than people today who seem to expect the world and complain about the smallest thing
2) interesting how back then the focus was on efficiency, value for money, free parking etc. and how times have changed
3) the old Cred Street looked amazing

I dont think the park would ever go back to those magical days.

this video just makes me cross why cant alton towers today keep alot of that and it looks a hell of a lot cleaner to

Oh how I wish I could travel back in time and experience Alton Towers back in those days. :(

The grass is always greener folks, while the park was shiny and new, as it were. There were a fair few fairground rides and capacity hogs in the mix!

Totally, however no-one had ever experienced the likes of Nemesis or Oblivion. To these folk, the corkscrew was as good as nemesis because they quite simply didn't know any different.

I remember The Missile at AA being my 'favourite ride ever' at one point - Iron Wolf being a close second.
