Maybe I'm just a cynic but I fully expect it to be an IP or sponsorship, surely that is the only reason Merlin would go back to improve an existing ride?

:)

Exactly what I'm thinking. Probably sponsorship by British Airways and the tunnel themed to a runway. The new indoor sections at the station are likely to be boarding gates and a photo opportunity prior will no doubt be where you collect your boarding pass.

Unless they're making it go faster and putting several inversions into the track, then I couldn't care less. Extremely unlikely. So whatever they're going to do, it won't make the ride any better, probably worse like other ride refurbs.

Could that be an indication to a space theme maybe?
Quite possibly! I've just downloaded the new blue AT logo and noticed in the URL, it is entitled 'air-space-logo'.

Hmmm, interesting. Could just be the style they are going for, or it could be more a space theme. Not sure how that would fit into FV mind!

:)

Airspace is where aircraft fly. So I wonder if there is going to be a pre batching area with airport style security and body searching (oh no rubber gloved teen hosts)
:D

Mmm...wonder if it is going along the lines of something space/military like, does it mean that we might get something like what the original theme what we were supposed to get?

The original theme was never meant to be military, that is just a long standing fan rumour (source: John Wardley).

What was the original theme to be again? I keep hearing it was supposed to be an oasis theme or something? Then again judging how little of it is themed currently, I guess they have nothing to lose to put a theme on top.

Yes was an oasis theme, with waterfalls.

It would have actually been a really cool theme if they had done it.

Imagine those drawing with no waterfalls and badly welded high fences and if you squint.... It's almost just like it.

Like the new logo. Part of me thinks they would not design a new park logo and release it this early for something as trivial as a retheme for an existing ride. I know we will not be getting SW8 in 2016 and maybe not even in 2017, but last time we got a radically different resort logo we got The Smiler.

I wonder if in addition to the retheme air may get some support attractions. Probably a long shot given no planning application yet... But could this retheme be to lay out the stall for a consistent theme for SW8 to follow at a later time? We need to watch this.

I think this is the first step in a new direction for the area.

I'll be happy if they do it right and its not an ip. Nemesis home planet, great. An oasis minus the concrete, sure. A badly thought up ip, or half done theming, what's the point?

Oh well, whatever the outcome, it will still have a better theme than Rita.

I do think some rides don't need a theme, like Rita. But just don't plonk them in a themed zone.

I think that this will be VR technology added to the ride with a different sort of film /animation shown aided by the ride to give the sensation of flying. I really think that the logo is quite pretty too!

I like the idea of VR, but then you might as well not be on a roller coaster. It kinda defeats the object. I'm actually excited to see what happens. As much as I dislike air, when it opened in my teenage years I did like it.... Just always needed to be faster for me... And never enjoyed the part on your back.

A half-hearted space retheme looks all too likely at the moment. Space references on the marketing material, colour scheme fits in with that, seems an appropriate theme for a green-screen photo point.
