2016: Air - Re-theme to VR Coaster - Galactica
15 mins. Also - place your bets now for how long before half the VR screens don't work and don't get fixed resulting in seats being out of action and throughput being reduced.

The VR has to be attached to the riders head, not the restraint. True VR like the type found on Alpine Express uses the principle that you can turn your head in any direction and what you see reflects what you are looking at in the virtual world.
Each eye must see a different image to create a true 3D environment.

Don't visit and if you do, don't ride it.When merlin have a ride that isn't likely to fail, we won't criticize. (Can't speak for myself as I've never tried it) but quite a few members have been on VR alpen express, and it kills the throughput as well as not being as good an experience.
I said the ride was likely to fail - it will have lots of downtime, it will cause lots of faff, the headsets don't really work with this kind of coaster. I never said I wasn't a little excited about riding it and finding out for myself.Don't visit and if you do, don't ride it.

So, VR, in a weeks time we'll have Towers' worst kept secret confirmed! I have been very sceptical about VR from the off, I do not like the concept of it on a coaster. However I am always prepared to wait and give things a chance.
I have just returned from EP where I got to try out VR Alepnexpress. I hate to admit it but I really really enjoyed it and ending up laughing most of the way round. Despite knowing the layout of the coaster I had no idea where on the track I was and the 'inversion' felt real. A very fun experience. I remain cautious though, I could relate to the film used on Alpenexpress as it used familiar characters and surroundings as well as the outstanding Europa-Park Suite music. Would I enjoy it as much with a film that I cannot relate to? I'm not sure.
It certainly means that I am looking forward to Air next year more than I was.
I can also confirm that Air's VR will not be done by Mack/VR Coaster (we were told this at EP).

There's a story on BBC about a VR demo where the controller wasn't properly set up and the reporter got disorientated and nearly threw up! Made me think of your comment, unfortunately it looks like syncing maybe crucial to the success of a VR coaster. Here's the article:VR ... oh lordy Lord McLord, more down time coming
riding round in the dark as the video feed stops just as you leave the lift hill
paper bags at the ready for all the vomit induced from motion sickness as the video de-syncs

Reading in the car makes me puke too. When I was a kid all the simulators in Florida were great.
Not anymore.... Blurghhhhhhhhh
So its official according to the Birmingham Mail... http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/family-kids-news/live-alton-towers-new-ride-10719484

I just saw the mirror announcement of this (forwarded by a friend honest) and the way they shovel the smiler accident in at every opportunity just comes across as bitter. If I was Nick Varney I would offer them the 2-for-1 tickets and see how quickly they change their tune. (I'm not providing the link as I don't want to increase their hit count but its not hard to find if you want to read it.)
On the plus side, I have never experienced VR in any capacity really. So I'm guessing I'm in the minority who is looking forward to it. I just hope there are Galactica Space Travel sickness tablets available in the shop

It'd be odd that you would be won over by it, before riding it, no?It states that VR will be an option which i suppose is better however i am still not won over by this.
Bring it on.

Certainly looking forward to this far more than I was a few weeks ago. If done well it could be a very good ride.
Slightly concerned that the headsets are attached to the trains though. At EP all headsets are cleaned after use, Towers clearly can't do this. They could get quite dirty and sweaty on a long hot summers day. Nice!

Still, at least its optional, so you(?) can still go on it as air.Just asked about disabled riders got this response
