Traveller day?

The older generation tend to keep out of the way and not cause trouble. Unfortunately the vast majority are teens / young adults with something to prove.

That's probably about right, the only time I've witnessed trouble is with younger travelers.

I once found myself in the middle of a travelers event once, just looked like a market in a field. Until I realized something was a little odd about what was being sold... A lot of ornate china stalls (plates etc), brightly colored women's clothing stalls etc and just a general feeling of 'yesteryear'. Wasn't until I was right in the middle of it did I realize what it was. No trouble or threatening atmosphere though, no problems.

Anyone care to give some examples of how bad their behavior gets over these weekends?

We've got young ones in our party, wondering if we should seriously consider a change...

I wouldn't book if it was travellers day but on the same hand I wouldn't cancel if I had already booked. Any trouble will either be those looking for it with the travellers or amongst themselves. The behaviour might seem a bit odd and brash with some colourful language but some people say the same about Thorpe and I've yet to have a major problem. If you are spending most of your day at Cbeebies with the I'd imagine it would also be fine.

Its more the atmosphere in the park than anything else.

Young girls walking around in their mums high heels. All the lads looking the same with their same hair cuts and wooly jumpers in gangs. If your stuck between them in a queue expect shouting, swearing, pushing in, jumping over fences etc. Say anything to them and get a mouth full of abuse. Metal detectors and increased security on the entrances, security walking around. With regards the scare mazes, usually a member of staff or security will go through the mazes and escort them through due to violence against actors in the past.

Never seen a fight break out however.

It's a real shame and as many have said, it ruins the atmosphere. Would Towers be able to ban them to prevent further damage/misbehavior or would this breach discrimination laws? Unfortunately I imagine the sensationalist media would pick up on it if they did.

I’m just hoping that there’s not too much damage left over on the following Monday, should be interesting.

Yes, I think the 'sensationalist media' would probably pick up on Britain's leading theme park banning an entire portion of society.

Always so much fun to read this discussion in the exact same format, and often featuring the same participants, each and every year. A timeless warm-up session for the tedium of the closed season.

I realize that hence why I made the statement at the end, in a dry and sarcastic way. I'm sorry if what I said came across in the wrong way, I have never made a post before about this topic, and was in a state of annoyance when I made the post.

And so the annual mudslinging begins! :p

Place your bets! My tenner say topic lock within three days.
It doesn't have to be that way, but maybe locking it would be for the best. I apologized to the guy, and meant every word of it. It's clearly a controversial topic and I confess that I should of held back from posting.

Relax buddy, You weren't to know. Those of us who've been around for years have already spoken our minds on the matter (regardless of what side of the argument we are on). These days I just stay out of it.

Popcorn, anyone?

Hey Sauron, don't worry about it. My post wasn't aimed directly at you. It's just a bit exhausting to see this come up ever year. It's probably a day that's maybe worth avoiding for a more chilled visit, sure, but a lot of what you read is overblown. Besides, this forum is best when it's not making broad generalisations about any group. For better or worse, Alton Towers is a theme park, and it's for everyone.

Think we'll be going regardless, it'll be interesting to see how big the difference is to a standard day.

Fingers crossed!

It could always be worse, you could be going when there's a Theme Park Worldwide meetup going on...

I'd rather stand in a queue with a bunch of travellers than a load of vloggers any day of the week.

Some of the travelling community are at the park and you don't know they are there.
I have bumped into members of my local community at the park. And they were just cracking on with having a good day.

You'd rather be in the middle of a mass brawl than a bunch of enthusiasts?

They dont go there just to cause trouble, they are there to have fun too, its a big social event for them and the last thing they want is to get kicked out of park.
its just their fun can be a bit OTT

I would probably be the instigator of a mass brawl if I had to spend too long next to anyone with a Go Pro shouting 'check us out on YouTube!' at people...

I'd much prefer to be there with enthusiasts, just not ones with cameras..

Saw no problems today on the park, which was great. Don't know if Sunday is more popular for them?

You will know when they’re on park as there will be a high security presence!
Honestly I’ve only ever had an issue once with traveller day and we somehow end up there the same day most years!
Last year the only problem really, was the park was looking more like a winter wonderland than a Halloween event thanks to the decapitation of a few giant teddy bears.
