WDW Hollywood Studios: General Discussion

In the above blog post Disney released some concept art of one of the new rides for Toy Story Land.

And they addressed the speculation of renaming the park by revealing that Hollywood Studios will not be renamed in the foreseeable future.

Which is probably a good thing as the suggested names in that survey last year were utter rubbish.
 
Disney have confirmed that Toy Story Land will open on 30th June 2018:

It’s official! Toy Story Land, the highly-anticipated toy-filled land inspired by the beloved “Toy Story” films, will open to guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios June 30, 2018.

When it opens, guests visiting Toy Story Land will “shrink” to the size of a toy and join in on the fun Woody, Jessie, Buzz, and Andy’s other beloved toys are having in Andy’s backyard. Here, guests can take a ride on Slinky Dog Dash, a roller coaster Andy has assembled from his Mega Coaster Play Kit and topped off with Slinky and Jessie. (Check out the time-lapse video above of one of Slinky Dog Dash’s first test runs).

Families will also be able to take a spin on Alien Swirling Saucers, a galactic play set that Andy won from Pizza Planet. Here, adorable little green aliens swirl about in their flying saucers with guests in tow in their rocket ship toys, while “The Claw” hangs overhead.

Guests can also walk through a new carnival game box to experience Toy Story Mania!, which has been a guest-favorite attraction at the park since it opened in 2008. Now expanded with a third track, the popular attraction will put even more guests in the action taking aim at 3D objects – using everything from baseballs to cream pies – in a variety of whimsical, fast-paced games.

Woody’s Lunch Box – actually, Andy’s lunch box that he’s set on its side – will serve up tasty meals and old-fashioned soda floats from a walk-up window setting. The entire land will serve as a visual celebration of toys, with Crayons, Cooties, Green Army Men, Rubik’s Cubes, Tinkertoys, and other familiar toys and game pieces incorporated into the land’s design.

As per my post in the DLP Discussion Thread, Disney have chosen to not renew their contract for the Twilight Zone IP. Expect to see changes to Tower of Terror over the coming years, although at the moment it is thought that the ride will keep a similar themem.

That's such sad news. The custom-made Rod Serling pre-show takes the ride to the next level.

I genuinely can't understand why Disney feel the need to keep tinkering with ToT, it's already pretty much perfect and has always been so well-received (especially considering it's essentially a glorified drop tower). They seem to sell plenty of Twilight Zone merchandise at the post-ride shop so I don't think it's about the IP becoming less profitable or relevant.

They should focus their efforts elsewhere if they want to upgrade or improve their existing attractions.

Has it yet been confirmed when the ride will be changing? As I really want to get on it if I go in August 2018 or 2019.
 
It has not been confirmed that it is changing yet, never mind when this might happen. All that is known is that Disney have not renewed their rights to the Twilight Zone IP.

Ah right. Thanks @Rob! So it might still be open if I go in 2018 or 2019. That's a relief!

I don't remember seeing much Twilight Zone merch, its mainly themed around the Hollywood Tower Hotel or Disney characters on the ride.
I don't expect the theme to change, they will just remove Twilight Zone and Rod Sterling, hopefully the rest of the story remains the same
 
Does anyone know when Slinky Dog Ride might soft open? I'll be at H.S. in about 3 weeks time, so hope it will be!

Sorry to say but I would imagine there is very little chance of it soft opening when you are there. I would expect some soft openings either in June, or May if things go really well.

Hi all, after some advice around Galaxy's Edge opening. I've been scouring around and can't find anything. Hoping for help.

I'm looking at maybe booking a trip for late October 2019 and am wondering how likely people think it is that the new area will be open by then? I've read lots about it opening after Disneyland and some about it being behind schedule. Just wondering if anyone has any more reliable info?

It's not a major deal breaker but i'd hate to book knowing we missed it by a few weeks. We had the same problem on our last visit in 2006 (Everest)

I expect it will be soft opening for annual pass holders and cast members from October half term. Then it will open in time for Christmas holidays. That's a prediction though

You seem very knowledgeable on the Florida parks, I’m going in a few weeks (4th-25th may), all the info i could find suggested it would be moderately busy with some quiet days but busier at weekends, would you agree? I think spring break and all the Easter celebrations are done with and it’s just before the summer season really kicks in. Outside of rides like FOP queues are suggested to be rather quite manageable
 
Disney World lacks a quiet season really now, especially with them reducing capacity on attractions at less busy times. Queues will still be quite long, especially for FoP, which you basically need to get a fast pass for.

Have you tried getting F for FOP as a non resort guest?! It’s mental, been trying every day for 2 weeks now
 
No, I haven't actually been to Florida before but I am still very interested in the Disney/Universal parks. Did you try to get fastpass for FOP exactly (I believe) 60 days before you visit the park, so you are one of the first people to be able to access fastpass for that day? If not, it's most likely they have all gone but keep checking, in case families change their fastpass preferences
