I'm still not overly worried by this at all. My wife is a nurse and is cool as a cucumber about it too. Most of us already have it or are going to get it at some point over next few months. It's inevitable. All we can do is try to ensure the elderly and the people with serious health issues are looked after. The rest of us do have to 'keep calm and crack on' to a degree. I hate that phrase with a passion but it's never been more apt. Everyone who is panicking isn't helping anyone.
'Keep calm and take precautions' would be ideal.

I feel sorry for the contestants in the German Big Brother house, that have only just been told about this. Think about it, if you were on that show, would you believe a single word of this? You'd be convinced it was all part of some elaborate hoax!

I thought some people might find this wikipedia article on social distancing interesting.

This formula was interesting for the geek in me:
socialdistanceformula.jpg

R is effective reproduction number
a is fraction of contacts you reduce to
f is fraction of population participating
R0 is the basic reproduction number, which for Covid-19 is thought to be about 3.5 (lots of uncertainty here)

For example, 25% of the population reducing their social contacts to 50% of their normal level gives an effective reproduction number about 81% of the basic reproduction number. A seemingly small reduction but profound in delaying the exponential growth and spread of a disease.

I assume they must have known about the virus in China though? They may have been unaware of the spread around the globe and into their country but surely they knew it was a threat? We've known since Christmas this thing was potentially coming for us after all.

You think the average BB contestant is the type to follow news in China? ;)

For those who haven't seen the BBC Four's Pandemic (broadcast in 2018), it's well worth a watch. It's very informative and features a simulation of a pandemic in Halesmere, showing how flu mutates, how it can be transferred and how to mitigate it. It's eerie to watch it knowing the predictions predate the current pandemic by a couple of years.

Today marked my last day in the office for the foreseeable, can't imagine there'll be many jobs in my industry after all this is over TBH.

My normally packed train has about 10% of the seats taken, normally gridlocked roads are flowing freely - seems the vast majority have taken notice

My neighbour said the other day she’ll end up in the nut house if her kids aren’t in school. Bet she’s knocking back a stiff drink right now.

I’m just waiting for the Merlin statement on Friday afternoon saying they are closing. Then all the complaints about leaving it until the last moment to cancel.

When they do eventually announce the closure I hope they are prepared as the MAP’s will want a refund or pass freeze...
