I think foreign travel could well have resumed by Q4 of 2020; the article only references “summer”. I’d suggest that holidays booked for October-December 2020 still have a decent chance of going ahead, as that’s still months away. For all we know, flights may well be beginning to resume in summer. Nobody really knows.

The 2 weeks quarantine time in other countries plus the 2 weeks quarantine time in the UK on return?
Yes though I doubt that will still be in place at the end of the year. Plus I could have a pretty good holiday in France or Ireland :)

Nonsense.

Young people, socially distant commute possible, quite a lot of space when you get there, no realistic way of working from home.

Old people, no realistic socially distant way to commute possible, tiny chambers to work in, largely can be worked from home.

Out of interest. How many children do you have? Before you start slamming other people for deciding to hold back the most precious things we have.

When do you propose to send your kids back? When we have a vaccine? Or if it's based on infection or death rates, what do you consider to be the threshold?

I'm genuinely curious to know what levels you consider are safe, bare in mind we're going to be living with this virus in the mid-term and it's not going anywhere this year.

There is no total answer. I guess when infection rate has sustained a remission number for the virus dor a long time. Like someone else said, schools struggle with a case of lice. So I am not trusting them with this. I would rather keep my son back until the risk is massively lower. Now I am not sure how low that will be yet. But I do know we are not there yet.

I doubt there will be enough teachers willing to go back in June / July and potentially put themselves at risk anyway.

It will be difficult to social distance in a classroom no matter what restrictions are in place and no guarantee children of that age will follow the rules.

Surely testing people coming into the country and getting the results will be quicker and more accurate than relying on trusting people to self quarantining for two weeks.

If this government pull their finger out, they should be able to arrange to test people before they get onto the plane and have the result for when they arrive in the next country, if anyone test positive, then isolate the returning passengers on that plane.

I feel listening over the last few days with regards to what we can and can't do, it just seem that if it is anything that is fun, you are not allowed to do it, but yet you can do it if it means that you can go back to work even if it contradicts the advice.

Some of the rules are just ridiculous, can't meet up with more than one member of family outside in a public place even if you keep a 2 meter distance, but you can meet up with as many strangers out and about keeping a 2 meter distance, can't have non house hold family members in your home, but you can have a cleaner coming in to clean. Can't see family members from outside our household, but you can go to work and see other work mates, plus many will need to get onto crowded public transport to get to work as alternatives are not available to them. You just simply couldn't write it  The leisure sector will be last to come out of lock down.

The bottom line is, this government don't like us having fun.

Is there any information or theory (not wild speculation/conspiracy) as to why we've been so terrible at testing? Why numbers have been so low?

It's obvious that constant and high-volume testing (and subsequent tracking/tracing) is one of the most powerful tools against this pandemic, but the UK has been abysmal at it. Even if we somehow messed up at the start, we've been in lockdown for over six weeks now... why are we still so far behind other countries?

Is there actually a known reason for this, with more detail than 'general incompetence'?

FurloughScheme till October now.
That’s the country well and truly buggered.
Nothing opening till then

Scheme ends. No jobs to go back to.

The government has expressed intentions to start reopening shops in June and hospitality businesses in July, so I think this is literally just to tide over the businesses that can’t reopen in July. I think it’s good that they’ve extended the furlough scheme to support the businesses that need it!

From what ive read it's partly a logistics issue, which is to be expected when you have Amazon, royal mail and UPS (amongst others) all involved in this one national project.

Extending the furlough scheme won't delay openings, as businesses will make more money open than they will keeping their staff furloughed. Agreed with @Matt N here, it's good to see the furlough extended though remains to be seen how many businesses will step up and contribute their share of the wages.

Can’t see anyone in the tourism or leisure industry being back open by August. And then what. . These companies with zero income have to start paying towards wages .... or lay people off
