If the Oxford trials go well (which I think they could; Boris Johnson has said he’s heard “promising things” from the trials at Oxford. I think we’ll know by next month, potentially July at the latest, whether it works from the efficacy results), then they’ve said they can produce a million doses by September and 100 million doses by the end of 2020, and that’s just with AstraZeneca; other companies around the world have signed up to manufacture it for their respective countries, so there should be a lot of doses by the end of 2020 if all goes well! That way, I could see a return to complete normality in early 2021, maybe mid 2021 at the latest.

Oxford University’s Jenner Insitute knows what it’s doing; they had been doing experiments on vaccines for other coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS, with successful results before COVID-19, and they leapt to work as soon as they heard of a new novel coronavirus in China. The vaccine has passed tests in monkeys thus far, which is a promising sign, and if the efficacy tests go well (we should know by next month), then they’ll start manufacturing it at a mass scale.

I'm also a front line worker, I've come into contact with the virus repeatedly, I finish work, scrub as best I can and go home to my family hoping I don't pass it on but no one can be certain. The world can not stop though, and not seeing my daughter for an extended period would do more harm in the long term. As will a total lack of schooling and socialisation, the longer that goes on the worst.

Of course no one would have a problem with you wanting keeping your family safe, it's the nonsense idea that MPs attending parliament is in any way relevant or comparable, or that children are being treated as guinea pigs. Patently absurd.

People thinking they know better and going against government advice is the most dangerous thing of all.

WHO says there is "potentially positive data" on Covid-19 drugs
The World Health Organization said on Tuesday that some treatments appear to be limiting the severity or length of the Covid-19 respiratory disease and that it was is focusing on learning more about four or five of the most promising ones.

“We do have some treatments that seem to be, in very early studies, limiting the severity or the length of the illness, but we do not have anything that can kill or stop the virus,” spokeswoman Margaret Harris told a virtual briefing, referring to the body’s “solidarity trial” of drugs against the disease.

“We do have potentially positive data coming out but we need to see more data to be 100% confident that we can say this treatment over that one,” she added.



Finding an effective treatment will be just as effective as finding a vaccine in terms of relaxing the lockdown. Imagine in the future catching the virus, calling the Doc, getting a pack of anti virals for a week, then it going away.
 
This is very promising indeed @GaryH, but I must ask; do they have a timeframe as to how long it would take them to determine whether the treatments work?
 
That is nice step in the right direction. However it is early days, and i hope more positive results come from more trials of this anti viral.

I know that Remdesivir, an anti-Ebola drug, was proving positive in early tests in America, but have there been any other anti-viral treatments showing positive results?
 
Not exactly sure what category it falls under but Apparently Merck's PNEUMOVAX 23 has been useful in treating some covid patients.

I posted a study about 3 days ago from a British company which has had promising results with a 3 anti vital drug combo which is looking good. I'll try find the link tomorrow again

To be fair, apparently they were some species of macaque which is the closest thing they could find to a human biologically, but I just meant that it was a promising sign for the human trials.

It might also be worth noting that Boris Johnson has previously said that he’s heard “promising things” about Oxford’s vaccine and how the human trials are going.
 
This is very promising! I know that everyone’s saying “we might not find a treatment or vaccine”, but I think the signs are there that this disease is treatable from the research we have! By 2021, I think the worst will be behind us and we will be able to either vaccinate against or treat the disease!
