Who's going to bother about it anyway? If they're wearing a mask themselves, they're protected. If they aren't, they're in the same position as you.

Talking about masks, presumably one is also allowed to remove it to eat?

A pedantic reading of the guidance says no, not sure what the psv regs or NRCOT actually say.

This is my worry. Once lockdown restrictions are lifted, I hope to make some long rail journeys. This will be a lot more difficult if I'm not allowed to eat.

Well actually that’s a big misnomer about non-medical face coverings - they’re not so much for protecting you (they’re fairly useless at that), but rather for protecting others against spit/sneezes/coughs etc that you accidentally, um, ‘emit’.

I guess for now it'l depend on which TOC, I honestly imagine some like XC (known for pedantic/nasty RPIs) would try kicking off.

I've been wanting to do Aberdeen to Penzance for a while. But I'm in Scotland, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it! It'll be a while before we can make that sort of journey anyway.
 
LNER just replied to me on Facebook to say taking a mask off to have a quick bite to eat or drink is acceptable but of course it's better to eat before getting on. From reading the other comments it sounds like they aren't going to question people without a mask on and trust that those who can wear a mask will do so

LNER is perhaps the TOC most likely to get things right seeing who their corporate overlords are.

Which means the new rule will not be enforced at all.
That seems to be the policy of all public transport companies.
 
TOCs tell their staff to avoid confrontation so that's no surprise. At the end of the day, put yourself in the shoes of the guard. I know I wouldn't want to make a scene, possibly resulting in abuse or assault, knowing there's nobody to back me up. In an ideal world there'd be enough enforcement officers, BTP etc but that's not reality.
 
So Boris has commissioned a review into the 2m distance for social distancing, which is due to be completed by the 4th July, the next date on the timeline for easing lockdown restrictions.

Of course it's arguable whether such a review is needed - all the evidence, both for and against decreasing the 2m guidance, already exists. It's pretty much just a decision that needs to be made. But I guess giving it a deadline is a good thing - coinciding this deadline with the relaxation of more restrictions could work out well for theme parks and the like if it is reduced, as it'll suddenly make operation easier.

I imagine it will only be enforced at terminus stations where BTP are always present.

Obviously reducing the social distancing to 1m is what they want to open more places. But it just seems so so rushed everything has goto be to a deadline. It’s not surprising tho end of the day I wouldn’t support 1m social distancing till a month or two after lockdown is eased. But they want things to return to normal overnight. The big problem I have is the knock on effort this has. Watching England rush lockdown don’t help other places that are not following England. I’ve seen it a lot recently in Wales people moaning because we are not doing what england is doing. It’s a shame really here in Wales we have got the r rate to joint lowest in the uk due to not rushing and following what the science tell us.
 
1m is actually the WHO advice, so if we decreased the distance to 1m, then we would still technically be following scientific advice.

Also, maybe we should give it time. The numbers will probably have gone down more by 4th July.

Then the government uses your lower R rate to average out the uk R to just below 1 so they can open more things sooner.

Besides, the R rate isn’t everything. As long as cases are low enough for the NHS to handle, the government will keep on easing. Regional R numbers apparently grow less accurate as an outbreak decreases, like ours is now.
 
I'm still very dubious as to how accurate and useful the 'R' value is. If you try and search for information on how they work it out (yes I know that it represents the number of people on average one person will infect, but how is that determined...), it's very difficult to find solid information, or any real details. It all feels a bit smoke-and-mirrors to me...

Supposedly there's 13 different ways used to calculate R and the figure we are given is an average (or more likely min Max of them all).
