Those calling for a return of face masks should look no further than Wales, still mandated there and where are the cases rising fastest? Yep you guessed it.

Scotland has also had the highest number of cases in the UK for the last two months up until a week or so ago, again face masks are mandated there.
When are we going to face facts and admit they have little to no use in this pandemic and stop this pathetic call from the media that we all must wear them every time cases go up.

Do you like rollercoasters Big T?
You only seem to want to spread mask hate.
At least we have stopped calling them face nappies.
The facts from meta studies of scientific research overall clearly show that masks are an effective tool in preventing the spread of the disease.
Disinformation has little to no use in this pandemic.

I’m an engineer, I love rollercoasters, that’s why I’m here, ask me a question on a ride system and I’ll do my best to answer it, I get a thrill out of riding them but for me the engineering of how they work is what interests me.

One mans hate is another’s difference of opinion, my posting style can be a little direct sometimes but I make no apology for that, that’s me, we aren't all the same.

Im not sure what you mean by disinformation? The facts are out there for all to see, parts of Wales and most of Scotland have had the highest cases for weeks and these are the only places that still mandates wearing of a face mask in public places.
Studies into face masks and their effectiveness are flawed in that they are predominantly made in a laboratory, the problem with that is it generally excludes human behaviour which unfortunately renders them useless in most cases.

Opinion time here but in my opinion they are more about control more than they are about preventing anything, by getting people to wear them the media controls the government and the government control the people.
The visual effect of it all is quite lemming like if you ask me but what do I know.

You obviously know far more than the scientists attempting to deal with the matter.
Nice to know you like coasters though, not just hate masks.

I expect a large part of the problem is that because Boris announced "freedom" day back in July, even if Wales and Scotland did keep mask laws, people aren't wearing them becasue the national government said they didn't have to. I expect copliance isn't great in Wales & Scotland.

Had the government left it as masks must be worn when possible indoors (ie not while eating and drinking) I think a lot more people would have continued complying.
But the talk of "freedom" day turned it into yet another us vs them issue rather than keeping everyone focused on looking after each other.

Hospital admissions have remained pretty much static, they've not followed the cases spike at all. Intervention beyond vaccine doesn't really seem necessary to me.
The thing is I'm not really worried about hospitalisations anymore as we know they're relatively low because of the vaccine. I wasn't worried about cases until a few days ago but now they are so high we risk exposing the virus to the vaccine more which could well lead to another mutation that is more resistant to the vaccine and that would remove all our progress. That's why I think a drop in case numbers is now necessary.

There is a variable that would be useful in interpretating the data. ratio of positive tests to total taken for each area.

Also masks are only affective if worn correctly. Or at all. How many are claiming mask exemption that don't fit exemption criteria.

There is not enough data to say 100% masks don't work in this situation. And not enough data to say they do work 100%

We should be looking at the data and know it going to have flaws. As it real world data and not collected under lab conditions.

I swear months ago the BBC and others reported than the cloth and surgical masks everyone are using are basically useless because, although tried and tested in a controlled environment they may offer some protection, in the real world that doesn't happen. Makes sense. How many people wash their reusable one? How many are actually fitted to people's faces? How many people have the same one they've been using for a month stored in their pocket? In a lab and in the real world are two totally different things.

Can we also stop with this idea that masks literally don't inconvenience anyone. They do. My hearing is not particularly great and I rely more on lip reading and facial expressions. Let's also remember masks are hugely damaging to the environment and can be costly (pack of 10 N95 cost me £15).

What I don't understand. All these people asking for masks, where are they in the real world? Because I'd say I see about 10% of people in masks now. If you want to wear one no one has stopped you from doing so.

I shop in that finest of posh old biddy stores, Booths, in Clitheroe, (bit of a northern Waitrose, for the southern visitor) for an elderly customer.
Mask use in the last few weeks has been about 80%, over half a dozen visits.
Aldi has been about 20% mask use.
Weird isn't it?

All face coverings work to some extent to stop infected droplets leaving your face.

A more expensive N95 mask will help stop you breathing in the virus, but a simple cloth mask is effective in stopping you breathing out the droplets. Think about the fact people have used handkerchiefs for sneezes for centuries.
Of course something that seals better will work better, but wearing something is better than nothing at all.

Also masks (and sneezing into a hankerchief/tissue) protects others more than me, so yes I am able to wear one now, but others not wearing them still puts people at some risk. Also cloth ones are not that damaging to the environment as I expect you are washing your towels anyway and can chuck them in.

I’d rather see it mandated you have to have the vaccine before any mandate returns around facemasks.
The anti vaccine brigade are the true selfish ones and getting the remaining vaccine shy jabbed would do far more for the daily figures than inconveniencing everyone else by forcing them to wear something they don’t want or need too.

Agree that the majority shouldn't be penalised for the actions of the selfish minority with regards to the vaccine vs mask debate.

Thats not to say that I totally oppose mask wearing or that I don't think it should be brought back if necessary but for me that's more of a last resort.

Domestic vaccine passports should never have been scrapped.

I don't think the anti-vaxxers are having an effect on transmission as much as on hospitalisation stats. It seems to be just as transmissible amongst the vaccinated, they just don't typically get as ill. It's number of hospitalisations, not transmission rates, that will risk a return to the types of restrictions we all saw last year.

EU watchdog mulling authorisation of Merck's anti-COVID pill

The European Medicine Agency has "started a rolling review of the oral antiviral medicine molnupiravir" against COVID-19 developed by pharmaceutical company Merck, the agency said on Monday.

If given the green light, it would be the first treatment for coronavirus that does not need to be administered through needles or intravenous infusions.

...

The company reported this month that the pill cut hospitalisations and deaths by half among patients with early symptoms of COVID-19. The results were so strong that independent medical experts monitoring the trial recommended stopping it early.

In a very intriguing move, all current red list countries are being removed from the red list as of next Monday: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59063818

What are our thoughts on this?

Should certainly be a boost for the travel industry, and it will hopefully provide a little more certainty in terms of whether you’ll be able to travel in the near future!

I'm not sure about this. I think it might have been wise to have a small red list of countries that are likely to have new variants and things. I don't want it forever however I think they should have kept it for just a little longer until more of the world is vaccinated. Only really because there is the chance of a variant that's more resistant to the vaccine which could completely ruin our progress.

Out of interest, is it known whether those in JCVI group 6 (underlying health conditions) are receiving booster vaccinations, or is it only those over 50 and those who shielded?

I only ask because I was interested to know whether I should expect to be called for a booster vaccine this winter. I was vaccinated early, as I was in JCVI group 6 during the initial vaccine rollout, and my 1st and 2nd doses were 27th March and 20th May. I initially wasn’t sure, but for what it’s worth, I’ve had 2 texts telling me I’m eligible for a flu vaccine in the last couple of weeks…

That’s a really good question, Matt - it’s something Mum’s discussed with me, given I’m in group 6 as well. I have to admit I was in two minds about the booster at first, given I’m young and in good health, but I may as well take it when offered. It’s not just about me - it’s about helping to protect others.
