Thorpe Park: General Discussion

Well if I remember correctly Chessington launched there website before launching the full consultation with documents. I think that's likely with a consultation in the new year. I think we might get things like height and possibly noise however I'm not sure we'll get all the details. I think that lines up with Chessington although we have to remember Thorpe's planning restrictions aren't quite as restrictive as Chessington's.
It's not long to wait anyway so we'll find out soon enough and hopefully because they're doing a consultation they might not have too many planning issue's which I think they must be envisaging otherwise why have a consultation?

I will eat my hat if it's not a B&M Hyper.

It’s more the other way around. If you anticipate a backlash from the locals you do the consultation to minimise the chance of them objecting too much. People don’t like the unknown, so give them all the info officially before rumours spread and people object because they don’t know exactly what is happening.

If the consolation is on the 10th then I think we’ll get a very good idea of what this ride will be even if we don’t get a layout.

I’ll put my money on an out & back across the back of the park. Starting in the old town area with a turnaround the other side of the rapids. I think they’ll need the consultation because of the height & the huge affect it’ll have on the public footpath.

As for the type then who knows. B&M hyper, RMC, GCI are all contenders. Then chuck into the mix that there’s been a couple of hints at a flying coaster, safe to say that wouldn’t be an out & back.

hints at a flyer? Where?

Yeah that's exactly what I was trying to say. They are anticipating some backlash and so are doing a consultation to minimise the chance of that happening.

The poster that came out with EXODUS on it & what appeared to be a man flying or maybe floating in a woodland setting. My first thought was a launched flyer through the woods. And then the other day somebody in MMM posted a tweet of Peter Pan (sorry I can’t remember their name but saw it on CF). Could both be red herrings of course.

I think you might be onto something here...

Hmmm, it's quite fun speculating when you know that the answers are close on the horizon. Is there definitely enough room for two sets parallel of B&M track (send and return, if you will) along the old CCR route, behind Inferno and the rest of Old Town?

not seem they have you a link / can you repost ?

Clearly the poster is an early teaser. I can see where the flyer link has come from as well.

maybe a launched Vekoma flyer?

with the rumoured b&m deal actually being Chessington, Nemesis and SW9

To be fair this could mean that the hyper is going to be themed to flying or maybe a B&M flying coaster.

I'm really not sure which of these seems most likely but I'm still leaning towards it being a B&M hyper maybe themed to flying of some form.

Would a Vekoma launched flying coaster really need a public consultation? If it would be anything like F.L.Y it wouldn’t be half as intrusive as the likes of Stealth.

A B&M hyper with some sort of space theme wouldn’t be out of the ordinary. Orion all KI did it. (Yes aware it’s a giga)

The space theme has been done to death though, and isn’t abductions basically what the Swarm is based around?

Although I think it'll be some time before we see what might happen at Alton as I think it's looking increasingly likely we won't see a big new ride there for a while with a nemesis re-track in between.
Is there evidence for a nemesis re-track? It's by far the least popular ride at the park; surely it makes sense to remove it completely if it requires that type of maintenance to stay in operation. Then again, the capacity is decent, it may be more popular than it looks. I love nemesis, but I can't think of any reason for Merlin to spend money that could be invested into new attractions on their oldest major coaster.

I think Nemesis is still very well-liked, on the whole, even though it doesn’t quite stack up to Smiler and Wicker Man in popularity terms; I can imagine that the ride’s high throughput is at least part of the cause of its lower queues. Although I will digress that it is not the most popular among the average visitor these days, it does still have considerable appeal, and it doesn’t stand out to me as “the least popular attraction by some margin” by any means.

Also, Nemesis’ removal would almost definitely cause mass uproar among enthusiasts, greater than even that of some other recent ride removals; you might have thought that the reaction to Blackpool’s Wild Mouse removal was bad, but the reaction to Nemesis’ removal would likely be 10 times worse!

I think the reason a Nemesis retrack is being suggested is because rumours have been spreading that it’s in a somewhat ropy state, and rightly or wrongly, many consider the ride somewhat irreplaceable. There is a precedent for Merlin doing this, with both Gardaland (Shaman) and Heide Park (Colossos) having had coasters retracked in a similar fashion recently. My logic is; if they did it for Gardaland’s stock model Vekoma Corkscrew, which wasn’t exactly a revered ride prior to the retrack, I definitely think they’d do it for Nemesis!
