Disneyland Paris: General Discussion

My issue after the additional lands are completed are that they will still only be plus two in ride attractions.

Hong Kong's Frozen Land are getting an additional ride in the rollercoaster which Studios probably doesn't need, but be creative! As for the Star Wars land they should look at changing this to represent Tatooine or Hoth etc to bring that freshness and drive appeal.

I still feel DLP gets punished for the Eisner years and initial start up issues. When was the Main Park last given a new attraction? Even something like the runaway railway would be something they could add quite easily and give the park something new.

French workforce... I mean look at phantom Manor, it's a small world etc... Then look how long it takes cast members to serve food and drink.

I don't think that's a fair assessment. The speed that the French build railways, motorways and infrastructure puts the UK to shame. Also, Parc Astérix, Futuroscope, Nigloland and Le Pal are managing to make investments in a timely manner.

It’s happening in Florida too. It’s a Disney thing not a France thing. They announce things before they even know what they are going to build and then take forever to build something.

The Disneyland park desperately needs something new that's not a show or perade. Entertainment is amazing at DLP, but a unique attraction and clone is really needed.

It's interesting how you can tell this is Avengers Campus Version 2. By which I mean there's clearly a lot of minor tweaks in this version as a direct result of feedback from DCA. Adjusted railings to make characters more visible. More areas for characters to pose. Better meet-and-greet setup.
Version 2 doesn't necessarily mean better In every way though. The absence of the Spiderman Stuntronic also suggests an active decision based on feedback. But if that's budget, maintenance or value based it's hard to tell.

Overall the area looks good. It's a big improvement on what was there but more importantly has plenty of scope to be expanded going forward.

Ironically I actually feel Tower of Terror fits alongside this area better than Guardians of the Galaxy, despite it not sharing the theme. From shots of the rooftop show it just looks like another tall building you'd expect to see in a built up city environment. Whereas the alien look of Guardians puts it at odds with the rest of DCA.

I’m going to be the grumpy old man here and say that this type of Marvel theming doesn’t belong in a Disney park. Disney parks have always relied on their richness of theming and detail and I just don’t think the Marvel aesthetic lends itself to what Disney (at least used to) do best.

I suspect it’s cheaper to implement than the layers of detail you see at Animal Kingdom or Galaxy’s Edge, but too me it’s just too bland and homogenous. Even Tomorrowland (and even more so Discoveryland) has the rich, enveloping and unique feel, but the modernity of this just doesn’t strike me as an experience I couldn’t get somewhere else.

I've always despised Avengers Campus' simple architecture and design. It's concept and IP alone Don't belong in a Disney Park IMO about Hollywood, nor modern sci fi. They should've had a single ride dedicated to Marvel in TomorrowLand, not an entire area! When I go to Disney Hollywood Studios, I expect 2 things, theming that replicates a Studios feel and style with its art Deco architecture, and an attractions concept actually being about Hollywood and film Studios in some way.

Avengers is a film series, but it isn't portrayed like that at The Parks, as if they're intentionally ignoring that bit. Th areas are shown and represented in a very serious manner for the sake world building, for trying to be more than a bunch of films, and are trying to make you believe that all of this is real and you're not in Disney Hollywood Studios! They seem like they're trying to ignore the fact that they're just films. It gives the entire idea of Hollywood Studios being based around the Golden era of the media industry the middle finger.

I definitely prefer Superhero Island at IOA, it's intentionally campy with its comic like architecture and style and campy mascot costumes of superheros, and indulges it very passionately. It clearly knows its just a bunch of films and comics, so they don't take it all that serious. That's what makes it fun when comparing it to Avengers Campus.

You do realise that Hollywood Studios is over in Florida, not Paris, right? The park in Paris is Walt Disney Studios, and it is the worst Disney theme park by far. Avengers Campus is a vast improvement on what was previously sprawls of open tarmac. I've not seen enough of it to comment fully, but look forward to experiencing it for real.

Yes Walt Disney Studios is still (currently) a studios themed park but it is clear with the long term plan that they are trying to get away from that feel. Even other somewhat more recent additions, Toy Story Playland and Ratatouille, are not done in a studios style.

IOA'S version though is done based off the comics/animated shows because the MCU just didn't exist at that time. As such it has a very different style to the more "realistic" current branding.

I guess the question of "Does Marvel suit Disney parks?" is similar to the likes of them adding Pixar and Star Wars themed areas. Toy Story Playland certainly is a questionable one in terms of the style and theme involved.

On the other side of it is whether these areas are better off at the sister parks rather than the Magic Kingdoms. But also then you start following this whole "Walt's initial vision is final" fanboy nonsense when he himself knew that the parks need to evolve over time. Perhaps not to the IP sauce that they've become but that's the modern theme park market for you.

End of day having an actual themed area is better than what was there. WDS was just so badly designed and thought out and lacking on almost every level as a theme park, let alone one with the Disney brand. However the IPs being everywhere goes against the general escapism if that's what you're looking for. In Disney terms though, the people going want these kind of attractions, which is why we ended up with Jack Sparrow in the Pirates rides.

Sorry, didn't know it had a different name in Paris. But trust me, I remember going to DLP when I was younger, and when I was at WDS, it looks loads better (excluding RCnRs facade) than what's there now. I'd rather have a incomplete but still nice area based on Film Studios rather than some complete but Really uncreative buildings based on one of the most mediocre Film Franchises to exist to date. The only pro Avengers Campus has in Flight Forces new facade, but it wasn't any competition to beat the old RCnR one XD.

And on its future, unnecessary or Thematically inappropriate IPs will always ruin a park in the long run. Look at poor old epcot and that's been botched with the IPs... WDS will end up just like it, a former and depressing shadow of what it was once.

Just because something is better than it was, surely doesn’t make it good. WDS is universally regarded as the worst Disney theme park - and change they made would have likely been an improvement. I just don’t think they’ve capitalised on the opportunity to make a truly great area.

Unfortunately I think that’s where Disney is as a company at the moment. As long as it’s slightly better or newer than before (and has an IP), they’re content to put it in the parks.

Can't tell if you are being serious or not here? I'm far from the biggest Marvel film fan, but it is quite clear that Avengers is not one of the most mediocre film franchises to date. Just because you do not like it does not mean it's bad, comments like that make it very hard to take your posts seriously.

I think it is pretty universally accepted, amongst visitors and senior figures at Disney past and present, that Walt Disney Studios is the worst Disney theme park. It was done on a budget and little has been done to improve it since it opened. Disney are finally starting to invest in the park in a similar manner to how they invested in their other budget parks built around the same time (DCA and Hong Kong Disneyland). Fair enough if you like the park, but Disney themselves know it has never been up to standard.

And that area of the park was never 'nice'. I always found it soulless and way below the standards you would expect from any Disney theme park. RnR was always good fun (yet to watch a POV of the new coaster to compare) but that Backlot area was the worst part of a poor park.

From a proper grumpy old man...
Marvel...brand of dried milk isn't it?
And again as a grumpy old man, if something is better than it was, it is indeed "good".
Every last time.
Progress is always progress.

I won't lie, just kinda like it's more metal and industrial look, it's a type of so bad it's good way, where Avengers Campus is just, to put it bluntly, soulless and uncreative, and on a worse budget than WDS! I just find the films mediocre because they're all the same, you've got that unfunny bathos joke, predictable Villain, same plots just written differently, SOME nice concepts, and the hero's are really damn boring XD! Maybe it doesn't help my favourite films consist of Citizen Kane, The Terminator, No County for Old Men, The Blues Brothers, The Shawshank Redemption, Lawrence of Arabia, etc, etc you get what I mean.

You are making it quite clear in every topic that you just dislike any kind of change and it is getting to the point of completely ridiculous. You seem to long for a time in the past that you see through very rose tinted glasses or maybe even remember very little about.

None of the Studios park changes have been ground-breaking but every single one of them has been an improvement on the original which was without a doubt the worst work that Disney parks have ever produced .

The main argument here seems to be one that happened years ago over in Orlando. Give it 10 years and neither park will be the “Studios” it originally was. Admittedly Orlando is closer to this change with the last remnants of studio theming nearly totally removed, and WDS will likely rebrand too once the expansion is completed.

Studios was always an idea based on minimal financial investment for maximum return.

To put it clear, I only like the older version because of a "so bad it's good look of it." Trust me, I'm glad that they've decided to do something with the area, but what they did with it is just not good at all. The top 2 photos are completely valid, Those structures look appalling and lazy, but I actually kinda like the 3rd one, just needs some more detail on it.

I only like the old area because of NOSTALGIA, if I went to it nowadays, heck yeah I'd hate the area.

I'm not a 'I only want old stuff' guy. I'm really excited with Universal Orlandos future with Epic Universe! It really looks like it'll overshadow Disney if they won't do anything to try and top it.

Im all for Change at WDS, they could've easily changed the area to a 1980s downtown New York to fit with the theme if RnRC. But avengers Campus looks Dull and uncreative.

Studios was always an idea based on minimal financial investment for maximum return.

It wasn’t even built for maximum return vs investment, it was literally the bare minimum they had to do so as to not be in breach of the terms of their agreement with the French government. Failing to build the park would have resulted in default of that contract and severe implications for the resort. I think the remedy for such a default may have been something along the lines of forfeit of the resort.

The thing to remember is that even though the park was originally designed to be a film studio replica, this is arguably quite an outdated theme park archetype now. The studio parks were built in an era where seeing how films were made was this absolutely magical opportunity that you couldn’t get anywhere else. Whereas now… things like behind the scenes features on DVDs ensure that you can see that without leaving the comfort of your own home, and the rise of social media has made this even more accessible.

As such, these parks have had to evolve to provide an alternative product, and that is to immerse people in the worlds from popular film franchises, hence why we’ve seen things like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal, and Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios.

As much as this goes against what WDS was originally designed to do, the park has had to evolve to suit a different purpose. Its original design intention (to show how films are made and make everything like an authentic studio backlot) is arguably outdated in this day and age.
