[2024] Nemesis Reborn: Construction and Speculation

Ultimately what happens to Nemesis/Duel and the future of other projects is down to other people who are overlooked. Wardley only offers opinions and consults the creative teams, he does not lead or single-handedly build new rides. He's retired and I'm sure the man could do with a break between that and being used for PR stints. As said above, while Wardley has been a huge influence on the theme park industry, there are vast teams that work on these projects, let's not forget that.

The current team at MMM will want to put their own mark on Nemesis, for a lot of the team this will be a rare project to take part in, so they will rightfully want to make something more unique than a copy and paste of the 1994 theme.
 
It’s honestly quite tiring for people to look at this topic and see the same points being brought up regarding Wardley, Black Track or wether stanchion base photos are new or not.

If I may just add, I had no idea how old the stanchion bases are. I did skip back a dozen pages to check but couldn't see any mention of them so I thought I would share as being the geek I am, found it interesting. I meant no offence and was just trying to engage with the Nemesis topic without rehashing the pages of track colour etc. At least I learnt what they're actually called today I guess. Apologies, no spam was intended :disappointed:
 
Actually, I made a comment about calling the new Nemesis as 'Son of Nemesis' in which I was corrected that it had already happened in Robot Wars with a certain fluffy red and black Irish robot being just that.

Now with this colour looking to be black and red...it seems that we could be seeing the Nemesis monster itself painted red with black spots next! :p

Although I've made my thoughts on just painting it bog standard Merlin black quite clear, you could have a point there. I'd find it a consolation personally if this new track colour scheme blended with a new colour scheme for the monster itself so we could still keep the themetic style of the track like tenticles growing out of the most itself.

I'm intrigued with where they're going with this. Who knows, it may be awesome. It's just everything else so far is pointing towards the usual formulaic black track with Sci-fi and sinister organisation theme like X Sector already has.

Edit: Although "at least track isn't pink" has been put up as defense so far, that would actually make more sense looking at the current design of the monster ironically.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if Nemesis has a somewhat different theme in 2024.

I reckon that Colossos: Kampf der Giganten at Heide Park sets an intriguing precedent for a ride refurbishment of this style conducted by Merlin, and is definitely worth looking at as a case study for how Nemesis' retrack could turn out, in my view.

Prior to the refurbishment, Colossos was quite lightly themed, and the theming it did have pointed towards a lost city-style theme (think along the lines of Colossus at Thorpe Park).

When Merlin conducted the retrack, they rethemed the ride to be very similar to Wicker Man, burning effigy and all. The ride had a huge statue like Wicker Man, a very similarly decorated station and even quite a similar dark soundtrack if I'm remembering correctly. They also gave the ride its "Kampf der Giganten" moniker.

While I'm not expecting a thematic change quite as drastic as what happened for Colossos: Kampf der Giganten, I certainly wouldn't be surprised if we saw a fair few changes and enhancements to the theme, and I can sense that the changed track colour is part of that. I could possibly even see a moniker added to the end of the name, similar to "Kampf der Giganten" in the case of Colossos.
 
At least Merlin had the decency to copy the theming of a coaster in another country with Colossus. With Nemesis it looks like they're copy and pasting one that already exists in the exact same park!

But why should guests care about that? Shouldnt their job be to make the project the best it can be for guests, not themselves.

If changes are justified for genuine improvement to a ride that's already been made and enjoyed, fantastic. I think there's lots ways it could be improved. Not change for the sake of putting someone stamp on it, that would be pretty arrogant.

As for John Wardley, he's been hired for input by Merlin. It doesnt mean its his design but it's not just fans who appreciate his input.

The only thing we know so far is that the ride will have black track. Just because the ride's track is to be black, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're going full on with a Phalanx theme or a theme similar to the X-Sector rides. It could simply be to reflect the updated Nemesis legend on the website, where the track is the steel pinning down the monster.

Full on Phalanx is the only way. I only see that theme being rolled out across FV with maybe the next big coaster after Horizon going in there as well.

I agree with the changes and enhancements to the theme. Don't know a moniker that would suit Nemesis though and I wouldn't want it to gain one.

I'm pretty much expecting Merlin to whenever it comes to overhaul Oblivion that they'll simply copy and paste the theming from it's Italian cousin in Gardaland though hopefully keep the story.
So, X-Sector 2.0?
Wouldn't be suprised if they did TBH. Even with the building of Smiler the theme hasn't even changed much since opening and the plonked MOJ signs don't really add much to the grand scheme of things.

So yeah, I could see a modernised X-Sector happening which as long as they kept the feel of it then I honestly want have a problem with that.

I mean it’s not completely miles apart but not exactly the same.

X-sector is themed around a secret research facility. There is no real military connotations directly aimed at the theme.

The Phalanx is a more militaristic theme, with the idea that their purpose is containment of a big alien in a post apocalyptic landscape. It does creep into the research trope with sub-terra a bit however.

Both are mysterious but as you can pretty much put all theme park themes into the catagory (or a combination) of “mystery”, “fantasy”, “spooky”, “geographic” “futuristic tech” “adventure” or “historical” it’s not like there are a lot of base notes to choose from. Though I acknowledge Towers and Merlin do tend to gravitate to “mystery” because it’s easy to market.

I am curious to see how they use the Phalanx in Nemesis. With Subterra they were conducting some sort of research into the monster, what we have seen so far with the closing of Nemesis suggests they will elaborate on that.

With the original Nemesis comic from 1994 I am sure the Phalanx were a race from a planet who's world had been destroyed by Nemesis. I wonder if they will reference that or make any references to the original purpose of the Phalanax, I mean the Subterra Phalanx and the original Phalanx can co exist quite well. As it seems they elaborated on the Phalanx with Subterra to suggest after their world was destroyed by Nemesis, they came to earth to conduct experiments.
