They were demoing the console version of PC2 there last week.

Tricky but rewarding

With 12 days to go, I bit the bullet and pre ordered the deluxe version. I want the deluxe and pre order rides day one, so for me the cost was worth it.

I miss the days of the big boxes and instruction manuals aswell, I'm surprised they don't do 'boxed editions' and charge a premium for it.
I pre-ordered the deluxe edition when it was announced but I still don't have a laptop with a capable graphics card yet, will order something this weekend, hopefully...

That's what I did, and I'm usually with you. Sadly there doesn't appear to be a physical release for console on the horizon.PlayStation store is giving 20% off the Deluxe Edition pre-order if you own the original which seems bizarre. £43.99. I would do it, but I prefer my games on disc.

It's not unusual for a boxed edition to come along later. However I think the main reason they don't do boxed releases any more is because it slows down being able to release the game. In the past the final build needed to be ready months in advance so they could start producing the physical discs.I miss the days of the big boxes and instruction manuals aswell, I'm surprised they don't do 'boxed editions' and charge a premium for it.
For big publishers like EA they still do this, but as they know they can issue a day one patch anyway they are willing to take the hit that the copy on the disc might be full of bugs. For smaller publishers like Frontier it isn't worth that risk for the few extra sales they might gain. But they probably will release a physical deluxe edition including some of the the DLC later down the line.

The wording here, to me, suggests there will be a physical release at some point post launch. They have used the same wording for the FAQ about DLC.
Saying they have nothing to share, as opposed to we will not be releasing, suggests one is coming, just not yet.

I thought physical copies of games were largely a thing of the past?
It’s 7 years since I’ve even owned a laptop or PC with a disk drive. Since getting my first gaming laptop in 2017, everything I’ve had on my computers has been downloaded off the internet in some capacity rather than off a disk. I’ll admit it was a bit of a nuisance to get a game off my old laptop onto the new laptop without being able to use the disk, but most things are downloaded off the internet now, I thought?

No, around a quarter of games sold in Europe last year were physical copies. This rises to 42% for Triple A titles.I thought physical copies of games were largely a thing of the past?

I'll never buy a Triple A game digital only. I'll always have the physical disc. I've never bought a console or PC without a disc drive.
I've been vindicated with that strategy, which I also follow for music and movies I really like. I have them forever. I still play games from the 1980's that you now have to pay for if you don't own a physical copy. Some of them are not available anywhere other than physical copies (like Burning Rangers on Sega Saturn) so no way of playing them at all without a disc. I have the original copies of Sonic 3 & Knuckles with the original good soundtracks, since removed for most recent release for licensing reasons. I still own the Michael Jackson episode of The Simpsons, and every episode is in its original aspect ratio unlike on Disney Plus. I own the uncut versions of every Only Fools and Horses episode ever made.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 stores recently closed, making it harder to access games you've previously bought and deleted off your hard drive. Ahead of their sequels, I was able to watch Beetlejuice and Twister before I went to the cinema, as some streaming services took them down in advance and Amazon jacked up the rental price.

Yes, but in such a case Matt, you don't own the game with a download. Instead you hold a licence which says that you can play and download the game, for as long as it's available in your digital store or choice.I thought physical copies of games were largely a thing of the past?

If Frontier Developments decide to stop paying Valve for access to steam; there's a fall out and they pull their game from the store; Valve goes bust and Steam collapses; Valve gets bought out by a competitor who shutters Steam; you will lose your access to the game, downloaded or not. It will brick. It will not work.
I have several boxes worth of old PC games, some of which aren't available on digital platforms or (if they were) have been pulled. I could still play them, technically, if I fiddled around with compatibility stuff.
I bought a digital copy of the Lionhead Studios movie studio mogul simulation game, The Movies, direct from the developer who provided the Mac port. It is no longer available for download from their website, or their store, even though I have a licence and receipt. The developer abandoned the software after macOS 10.13 dropped 32 bit application support. There are workarounds, which aren't officially supported, but I'm unable to even get access to the installation files anymore.

Used to have a copy of The Movies. Little nostalgia gem there in the peak of "Tycoon" games.
The lack of disc drives and minimal space in the few remaining gaming focused shops is a killer for physical PC games. I too prefer to buy physical copies for my consoles though, aside from the odd indie game which never get a physical release or ones on good deals.
There'll always be a demand for physical discs. Though if Steam ever died or closed down (doubtful, given its THE centre for PC gaming) there would be a ridiculous fallout from it.

To be completely honest, I didn’t even know it was possible to buy a physical copy of Planet Coaster…
The problem for me is that most computers don’t have a disk drive these days. You have to look quite long and hard to find one with a disk drive, and if you do, you may have to compromise on specs for the price. Given the very low probability of Steam going bust or something terrible happening with Frontier or Steam, that’s a risk I’m willing to take.

Changing subject, I'm sure this won't be in the base game, but now that we can attach scenery pieces to moving rides it brings with it the possibility of having Madhouses in the game.
I'd love to just have a ride that's 4 rows of seats in a giant drum? Then we can attach scenery pieces as needed to the drum.
The only complication is they might need an intuitive way to see inside the drum.

You could buy an external disc drive, they connect over USB.To be completely honest, I didn’t even know it was possible to buy a physical copy of Planet Coaster…

I wouldn't say it's very low, it's unlikely but you can never predict the market.Given the very low probability of Steam going bust or something terrible happening with Frontier or Steam, that’s a risk I’m willing to take.
Microsoft are still going, but if you bought music from their MSN Music, or Zone, marketplaces you're screwed. Barnes & Noble are still operating, but if you bought one of their Nook devices in the UK, or e-books from the Nook store, you're also without luck.
I've recently been burned by this myself, with Planet Coaster on the PlayStation 5. Planet Coaster was redeemable as part of PS Plus' monthly game offer, you get to pick one game a month and you get a full licence for it. For all intents and purposes, it's as if you bought the game. If you stop paying for PS Plus, the game is in your library and you can still play it. Unfortunately, due to an expiring licencing agreement with Sony, the game is now locked in my library unless I pay £45 for it. Despite having paid for a few DLC packs.
Definitely done this point of the discussion to death though.
