Thorpe Park 2017: DBGT: Rise of The Demon

The ride will either be rushed to finish in time, or will open late. I'd prefer the later, but from merlins history, I know that it will probably be both.
 
Yeah the timescale is worrying, as a fan of Derrin I believe he'll do a good job with the concept or whatever part he plays, but it is curious how much they need to do in so little time. I saw a post on TT showing scruffy dog joining in the reveal of "we're involved" so I'm guessing there are a bunch of companies which will all pull together...ideally...when necessary. Maybe effectively building the ride offsite and dragging it largely assembled to Thorpe.

I have to say, I may well be wrong to get my hopes up, however this is possibly the most excited I have been about a project in the UK for quite some time. I certainly have a much higher level of intrigue for this than I did for The Smiler, I just hope that it doesn't disappoint and fall flat like Merlin's last few attempts at 'Indoor attractions' (Saw Alive, Sub Terra & I'm A Celebrity), though with the idea and concept being entirely from the mind of Derren Brown I don't think that is likely to happen.

That being said, I guess with things like this it really is all down to personal taste. I must admit I wasn't keen on the idea when it was first announced, but having sat down and mulled it over, if this has anything like the level of detail and showmanship seen in his 'TV' and 'Stage Shows' it could be fantastic. I do not doubt however that it could well be a huge 'Marmite' attraction, for those who live for huge coasters and all out thrills, this probably wont be for them, however for a lover of theatricality such as myself it certainly has... Potential!

Anyway.... a thought from me about the IP as it's something I've seen mentioned a LOT over the last couple of days. Firstly, the comparisons between the likes of Alex Reid advertising Thirteen and Jack Osbourne with Sub-Terra. I think it was pretty clear from the outset that these were celebrity endorsements to get column inches in the tabloids. I don't think there was much of an input from any of them in terms of serious development of the attraction.

In terms of Derren, it's being made very clear that it's very much something he's been involved with from the outset. Considering his line of work is ultimately showmanship, like Sam I'm really intrigued by what we could end up seeing with this attraction. We've been crying out for a long time for a step away from the norm, and it's certainly not the type of thing that we've seen before from theme parks in the UK.

Of course considering past additions, I can understand people having a negative view of the thing, but if anything it's certainly got my attention. Also worth noting is that the press response from this was pretty decent too, with it trending on Facebook for a good couple of days. So as much as people may consider it to be a dated or irrelevant choice for an IP it seemed to resonate with a lot of people. Of course, this could all change when more is revealed, so I'm aware to avoid getting carried away. But, so far it seems to have hit the mark in terms of reaction from the general public, and with little information to go on that seems to be a damn good result. Definitely interested to see how this pans out!

Derren Brown has just been on the one show, he didn't talk much about the ride and what he said I think we know already anyway:

- He's been working on it for 3 years
- It will be 13 mins long
- it's an experience
- it's a worlds first
- Thorpes most expensive ride

He says it's the most excited he has ever been about any project he has done before.
 
I am seriously exited about this "experience", even more than when swarm was being created. I don't visit often, but will be making an effort to visit soon after it opens. 13 minutes is a long time for a ride, and the only thing that comes to mind as a similar time is hex (counting both videos). I doubt that the ride itself will be 13 minutes long, but I really have no idea what this ride will be. Interested to find out this world's first is too.
 
I'm intrigued with the idea that "this is the direction we think all theme parks will begin to move in"

It could all be spin but my optimism allows me a glimmer of hope that this will be something very special. And I don't care how deluded that sounds :p
 
I've not really read into the thread far but wondered if anyone has got to the "secret derren brown gallery"?? Was fumbling through the site code and found this?

You've got a ride opening at Thorpe Park, how did that come about?

They got in touch three years ago to ask if I'd like to do something for them. It was total carte blanche, which was of course phenomenal to be asked. It's been three years of writing and creating this thing with a group of people that are just big kids. It's lovely, everyone's purely about the ultimate experience for the patrons which, for me, is totally my world. It's their biggest investment to date, which is hilarious because it's just me sat in my front room shouting ‘Let's do this!'. It's not like a rollercoaster, it's an attraction, the first of it's kind in the world, they're not saying anything about it at the moment but apparently it's going to be the future of theme park attractions.

Thorpe have uploaded a YouTube video today as an advert for next year's new attraction. It's just a more animated version of the images we've seen on the website, and tells us nothing more than we already know.
