Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built - The Crashpad

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

Looking at the plans, it's going to be located inside the park itself, adjacent to the dome on the right hand side of the entrance, which seems... odd.

Thanks for sharing cotda.

I have to say, those artistic impressions of the rooms look so futuristic. But the outside doesn't look as aesthetically pleasing.

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

Oh lol :D

Presumably this is to gauge the reaction before building a full scale hotel, as planned, given that this will only be up until 2016. Shame it looks bloody awful, and actually makes the dome look appealing.

Re: Shipping container hotel - Thorpe Park

I'm sure I speak for most people people when I say that this is not at all suprising :-\

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

Slight odd looking, and not sure who would want to stay there, espeically as the only access is across the bridge, which I guess will mean they will need to keep the main entrance to the bridge open all the time for people staying over? But I guess this does mean the dome could become open alot longer including the bar and shops.

Having a quick read at the planning documents it says this is planned to be there for 3 years with 117 rooms (40 shipping containers) to:
- Enhance the offer at thorpe park
- To test the market prior ro the permanent investment in the permanent hotel
- To provide accommodation during the detailed design and construction of the approved permanent hotel.

It will also be raised above the ground to stop flooding.

So by the sounds of things they are doing this to see how popular they will be before the build the hotel (they currently have planning permission for it).

One other thing in the document that I noticed was about the next coaster:
It is likely that the proposed "2015 coaster" will now not be brought forward until 2016 as Thorpe Park is prioritising its accommodation strategy.

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

As this is a major project, posts regarding this have been split from the general Thorpe Park topic

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

Oh
Dear

It looks like Butlins from the future on an extreme budget! The rooms make Etap look spacious!

One thing I don't understand is how this will at all give a fair insight into people wanting to stop. There will be some who'll stop regardless but if I offered you:

- Thorpe Park with its own Alton Towers Hotel style hotel
or
- Thorpe Park with a shipping container hotel

Which would you stop at? They are two completely different types of accommodation. Drayton let you stop in a tent. Sod that! I'd stop there in their hotel though! I would stop over providing there is a nice enough hotel and the facilities to make it enjoyable. I wouldn't be that desperate that I'd stop in anything though. If I wanted to stop that badly I'd drive to a nearby Travelodge.

If you ask me this seems to be nothing short of a cop out. Thorpe will offer this hotel. It'll not meet the expected figures. Merlin will pull the funding and plans for a permanent hotel and save themselves the expense ???

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

I read the topic title and thought this was a p**s-take, or something; as if the hotel looked like shipping containers, or it was as hideous as a hotel made from them. But not this.

Oh dear.

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

If we ignore the fact that this is very amusing, I don't think it's a bad idea at all. I've had a look through all of the plans and at the Snoozebox website and it seems a sensible way to go about things in the short term. It can be constructed very quickly, in 48 hours. It won't need to be done this quickly but it shows how easy it is to build. For what they are the rooms look decent and you can't think it will cost that much to stay over. And it means that they can have accommodation at the start of the 2013 season.

I do wonder what they would do about dinner/breakfast. Will they have a new restaurant in the dome to cater for this or will people have to make do with what already exists?

I did find this statement in one of the documents very amusing: "The buildings will therefore provide a consistent design which is in keeping with the surrounding 'theming' within the core of Thorpe Park".

:)

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

They already have the bar, resturant and coffee place in the dome, I imagine these will be open much later at night for evening meals and drinks and earlier in the morning for breakfast for guests to use.

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

In text, it sounds dire.

On the website however, it looks divine and perhaps cleaner than your average Travelodge. I don't see what the negative fuss is over it since it isn't a colourful eyesore (All white!), there's inclusive breakfast, free wifi, power sockets, a telly and various other amenities that you would find in most hotels.

Snoozebox know what they're doing so far as I can see and it isn't a case of Thorpe management deciding for 'lolz' to get a dirty shipping container, shove it in a corner with a blow up bed, a paltry mattress and a flashlight!

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

I think you've got it spot on there Rowe! The interiors look rather nice for what they are, and somewhat "cool", I'd definitely stay in one if the price was good. I do also think that it is just a massive coincidence that this will be a hotel made out of shipping containers, for what Thorpe/Merlin want Snoozebox appear to offer the perfect thing and they just so happen to be shipping containers which Merlin do have a slight love for!

:)

I just cannot understand what people will do between 6pm and 10am?

We criticize AT for a lack of options at night... but compared to TP, it's a metropolis!

Aren't you remembering guests could sample the sights and sounds of Staines-upon-Thames, just a small drive away?

Well, that's another park which has gained 'resort' status under Merlin

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

This is, without a doubt, the weirdest thing Merlin have ever done.

Re: Thorpe Park - Temporary shipping container hotel to be built

That's not to say I don't like it. I agree with Rob, I think this looks great.

It's almost so bizarre that it's too easy to go "lol typical M£rlin" or "now they're even make their hotel out of shipping containers lolz".

They're trying something radically different and new, and hopefully this will prove to them that a permanent new hotel will be successful. Innovation and experimentation is good. :)
