I don't even think they should have to tell guests to secure loose articles like phones. It should be nothing but common sense. I mean seriously what are people actually thinking when putting a phone unzipped in a pocket on a ride that goes upside down FOURTEEN times. If you do that then you deserve it tbh because that's pure stupidity

I completely agree, but unfortunately they have to tell guests the obvious so they can't blame Towers. As it's well publicised that loose articles on rides can be dangerous, it's a case of "we told you so, it's only your fault" when a guest doesn't listen and ends up having to fork out for a new phone. :p:)
They should have to pay a fine though for any damage caused to the ride/other people.
 
I wonder if you're giving a society where mobile phone use is so normalised too much credit.

Not least "they used to have a system to store my phone safely, now they don't".

Yeah that's a good point, but still. Comon sense should prevail. Plus the most common culprits are young, social-media-obsessed people I think.

While I 100% agree it is common sense, people are only human and genuinely do forget. I bet the vast majority of items lost on rollercoasters are from people who genuinely forgot they had something loose in their pocket rather than those who consciously place things in an unsecured pocket and thinking "that'll be ok in there".

Last year I rode Wicker Man, got to the brake run and wiped my glasses to clear the water off them. It was only at that point that I remembered I'd forgotten to take them off! And I've been sat on Thirteen waiting to be despatched and suddenly remembered I was still wearing them (got them off in time though!)

So while we all should remember to secure things, all of us forget things so the reminders Towers have everywhere for loose articles are fully justified.

Now if the phone fell from their hand while filming (or in this age, probably live streaming on Tik Tok) then the owner quite rightly deserves to lose the phone and have it smashed in to pieces - as long as no-one else gets hurt in the process.

I agree tbf, you can see how crazy the ride looks offiride, I am constantly checking my zip pockets in the station, on the lift hill, on every ride, even at the half way mark on The Smiler.
 
I’m a constant checker of my zip pockets as well; I often check just before I get on the ride numerous times and even when I’m secured in, I do a final check before we set off. Heck, I always get told by my parents that I’m being too paranoid constantly checking my zip pockets are done up!

However, I’m not sure it’s fair to penalise people for forgetting to secure small loose articles. We’re only human; we all forget things, and even if it’s seemingly second nature to us, it’s still possible to forget these things! In terms of why the park reminds people to secure their loose articles, it’s probably a way to help people to remember to secure them, and that there are holds provided to secure them in.

When you’re excited for a ride, especially after a long queue, I think something like securing loose belongings can sometimes be easy to forget or not take into account, in fairness!
 
I've had a phone come off on Galactica. Was wearing loose fitting shorts and simply forgot it was there. Also wore swimming shorts to the local leisure centre so I didn't have to get changed when I got there. Got in the pool and felt a vibration in my pocket.
 
I lost a bottle of drink into Coaster Corner from Twirling Toadstool. Mind fart until I felt it depart at speed.

I've done the whole wrong trousers bit like @Matt.GC above. Switched shorts to trackies, pockets weren't deep enough and phone skidded across the ride platform of Marauders Mayhem. Op retrieved it and gave it back at the end.

Although guests should store things safely, it’s also a very poorly designed queue on the Smiler. Compare it to Nemesis & Air where there is hardly any netting or similar as the queue isn’t under the ride as much.
Separating queues from ride areas makes sense.
 
I keep saying it install the locker system like arthur at europa, but across the park could work with either QR codes on the alton app or wristbands or similar with a deposit.

ok initial investment but im sure the bag room staff would easily cover it within a season

couldn't they have done something with bridges? Would have made the queue more interesting. You could have queue along the top of the marmiler and all sorts. Would have been pretty cool although probably not allowed due to planning and safety.

They could have spent some money relocating the toilets to where the arcade is, opened up that toilet area for queue and gone around the back alongside the access road. You couldn’t have avoided going down into the pit entirely but you could reduce the amount of queue down there. This would be more pleasant.

Or they could put the toilets in the Oblivion shop that is never open?
