Cedar Point: General Discussion

TPR were given a Valravn construction site tour the other day and here are a few photos from it:

And a look at how the awesome looking Cedar Point skyline is now looking:

And a slightly more up-to-date photo:

This is massive!

:)

I'm sure on that overview Gatekeeper looks the same height but according to RCDB there's a 50ft difference.

Like everyone else I find Valravn way less interesting than it should be. The added height doesn't massively set it apart from Griffin and the lack of scenery and splash down kind and of makes it feel inferior. I think if they'd built this right after the novelty of a longer layout might have stirred interest but in 2016 this feels like an old concept.

That really is an inversion and a half, that twisting dive back down on the outside seats is going to be incredible.

A new update from the Cedar Point webcam:

I know perspective plays some part but Valravn really does make Raptor look tiny!

:)

Perspective does play a huge part, but this image really hits it home for me. Lets face it the cobra rolls on large B&M inverts are by no means small... But it sure looks it here! :D

It may well not have the most exciting layout, but it sure is huge!

May I take this opportunity to congratulate the park on BEING SO FAR AWAY AND KILLING ME BECAUSE I REALLY WANT TO BE THERE EVERY DAY FOREVER!

The ride lineup they have is incredible and that skyline is a thing of beauty. Valravn is certainly a beast of a dive coaster!

As big as that drop is, it's hard to believe it's only 34FT higher than Oblivion. It looks HUGE!

Looking like more snow at Cedar Point, but Valravn continues to rise at a steady pace:

Cedar Point have also pointed out that this is the 100th coaster B&M have built!

:)

Slightly off topic, but whilst Cedar Point are busy building one ride, the local paper reports that they are tearing down another. Today the Sandusky Register have posted an article stating that the park have started to remove the Shoot The Rapids ride which only opened in 2010. Once again another Intamin ride being torn down after such a short lifespan, this comes only two years after Holiday World removed their Intamin water ride Pilgrims Plunge/Giraffica which opened in 2009.

The ride has reportedly suffered serious down time issues over the years, along with a boat capsizing in 2013, injuring 7 people.

I've seen this also, the ride always intrigued me so disappointed that I'll never get to ride it.

Another Intamin balls up though. It's fair to say that Cedar Fair are done with them now, what with the problems here since 2010 and the problems with I-305 when it opened in the same year. It is a pity as Intamin can produce world class thrill coaster that are perfect for Cedar Fair parks.

The main beneficiaries of all this? B&M.

:)

I saw a comment on the Cedar Point 100th B&M Instagram image from someone who said B&M weren't innovative, and that Intamin were the ground breaking manufacturers.

My response was...
"Intamin may be ground breaking, but they're also cable breaking, restraint breaking and generally broken. Nothing better than the hug of a comfortable, solid B&M seat!"

It really is a pity that the reliability of Intamin products is such that parks feel the only viable option is to rip out their purchases...!

Still don't like the idea of those restraints on B&M's newer coasters. I feel like it restricts your freedom on coasters like dive machines but they look nice nonetheless.

I'm not sure about them. I think they look okay on Banshee, but the older style restaints look better for dive coasters. Mind you the light blue for the clamshell is a nice combination the seat colour!

Nice! I can still only assume that the reason for 8 across shuttles as opposed to 10 across like Griffon is because of weight.

In other news, it has now been confirmed that Shoot the Rapids is to be dismantled and that it will not be moving to another Cedar Fair park.

:)

I am not used to saying this.

I don't like them!

This probably is more a reflection of how other manufacturers like Mack are making headway, but I find the seats look a bit - well - plasticy. I don't like the yellow belt, and they just lack the presence of earlier Dive Machines.

I think they look good on their Wing Riders, and work well, but I dunno - just don't look quite right to me!

When we saw Taron's cars, and the new Mack Eurofighter style thing cars - I was WOW, sexy!!

This, I dunno - lacks shine, impact, presence?

Am I being overly critical here (well, I'm not, it's only my opinions based on seeing them, but you know what I mean)?

I don't feel this ride will particularly add anything to the line up at Cedar Point, unlike how I felt about GateKeeper.

They have coasters that are loopier, coasters that are higher and already have a floorless coaster...!

Still, a dive coaster is a dive coaster! I love Griffon, that is for sure!

:)

It must be hard to decide what coasters to add to parks like Cedar Point, they have almost all bases covered! I'd like to see them get a modern woodie at some point, whether that be giving Mean Streak the RMC treatment or a new build from either GCI or RMC!

:)
