Things probably not helped that government officials aren't seemingly following their own advice. Or indeed been very slow in response to this disease in the first place. Probably too busy trying that herd immunity idea which was quite clearly not the right solution.

Still might make people realise that this is a serious thing and not just the Flu or whatever people think.

For an idea of how coronavirus is panning out in the rest of the world, tourist attractions across China were apparently rammed over the weekend and restaurants were so busy that they were having to only accept people with reservations. All the while, cases are not dramatically rising again. Take a look at this article: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/06/asia/china-coronavirus-tourist-warning-intl-hnk/index.html

If this is anything to go by, I think we could have some sort of normality restored by June/July here in Europe at the latest. Austria reckons that it will let large events go ahead again by the end of June if all goes well, so I think it should have blown over by the summer to some extent.

For an idea of how we could be exiting lockdown, Austria has announced that it will let some non-essential shops open again on 14th April. If this goes well, large shopping malls could be open again by the end of the month with some restrictions in place. Presuming this goes well also, restaurants and bars will be open again by the middle of May and large events will be allowed again by the end of June. They declared their lockdown on 16th March, only a week before Britain.

In terms of other European countries, Italy is now also apparently thinking about relaxing measures fairly soon, and Denmark is reopening schools and nurseries from 15th April.

Also, the news about Boris Johnson is incredibly sad, and I sincerely hope he makes a speedy recovery.

There are grounds for optimism in some of the numbers, but you have to be careful getting too excited about them. Denmark might be coming out of some elements of lockdown, meanwhile Sweden, literally across a bridge - never started.
 
I think the difference with us and the rest of Europe everyone does what they are told but some British people think it’s ok to go out to parks to top up there tans or host parties and BBQ’s I not seen any of my family since the 12th March but as long as all my friends, family and co-workers get thought this.
 
I think now, especially with Boris Johnson being admitted to ICU, we need to put our personal politics aside and just be human. I'm far from his biggest fan but I hope Boris recovers soon. Really feel for his girlfriend with a baby on the way.

Exactly. Boris has done himself no favours by apparently shaking the hands of coronavirus patients a few weeks ago, so this latest bit of news is hardly surprising. I find it incredibly morally repugnant that people are hoping he dies from it. Wishing death on someone is disgusting, no matter who they are. I've been a member of the Labour Party for the past four years. Boris is the antithesis of many things I stand for. I hope he recovers, and I hope that he does manage to successfully lead the country through this very difficult time. I also hope that he'll be a bit more sensible in the future when it comes to highly contagious diseases.

But should anyone in the current situation who wasn't following the correct procedures set out by government I'd not be particularly sympathetic towards them. Just so happens that it's the bloke in charge of the government in question.

I mean if I'd gone round a hospital full of infected, shook hands with them before telling everyone to not do that would you not call me an idiot?

In the update with Dominic Raab and 2 scientists getting grilled earlier, there was at least 5 journalists who questioned if the PM should be working if still in hospital and even questioned if his situation warranted a hospital visit. So when the news broke I'll be honest Rick,there was a cynical part of my brain that briefly went along those lines as well. I do wonder if the journalists will be eating humble pie tomorrow?

We're in crazy times right now, I almost miss the Brexit arguments :(

I think the answer to whether he should be working from hospital was perfect, as with all illnesses and all patients some people can work while in hospital and others can't.
 
I find when it cuts to the Q&A it seems like most journalists are just asking questions for questions sake. Most of what they ask has already been addressed multiple times.

This is the problem with having a press conference every day, there simply isn't always something to report, which results in tedious, repetitive questions and unsubstantiated speculation.

I agree, but I guess at least then getting the information out directly every day is better than media guessing what people should do. Repeating the same answers daily is better than someone guessing it should be fine to go for a picnic as no one has told me not to for three days. (although idiots will picnic no matter what as they probably don't watch the news).
 
The daily press conferences kind of make it feel like the government want to touch base with the public daily and just tell us what's going on. Of course what they say and it's truth can be debated, but I make my
myself a cup of tea and sit down to watch it every day.
 
Local village cancelled the fair and well dressing and that’s in July
They don’t expect lockdown to end anytime soon

When people think of lifting lockdown I think we need to be realistic in what that may be like.

I think the social distancing when out shopping will continue

I think theatres, cinemas, concerts etc will remain stopped

Bars, cafes and restaurants will have to re arrange seating to give adequate distance between people and may only be allowed to open limited hours

Not sure about pubs but similar to cafes I suppose

Not sure about theme parks, but maybe outdoor spaces will be given some more leeway



I don't think it will be lifting lockdown as in everything back to normal again....

The article says that a phased approach will be taken, with things like non-essential shops reopening first. They've said that they want lockdown measures to be lifted completely by June at the latest. By this, I'd imagine that they mean everything (bars, restaurants, leisure places, schools etc.) should be open again by June, albeit potentially with measures in place.
