A few bits of UK Coronavirus related news, unfortunately most of it in the wrong direction:

    More local lockdowns

People in Lancashire (but not Blackpool), Merseyside and parts of the Midlands and West Yorkshire will no longer be allowed to meet people from other households indoors or outdoors. Also some pubs and restaurants will have to close early.

There are now local lockdowns in a significant number of areas which apply to over 10 million people.

    A nationwide "circuit-break"

There's increasing talk of nationwide restrictions for a few weeks. Some hospitality businesses could be required to close, but schools and workplace would remain open. It's not clear which businesses it would apply to but it's likely to be announced by the Government next week.

    And perhaps not surprising:

London's New Year firework celebration cancelled

Normally around 100,000 people attend to see them so it's understandable that can't happen this year. There will be something that people can watch on TV at home instead.

The UK is a world leader..... in messing just about everything up. I don't understand why we are so bad at getting things wrong. Our little one is home from school at the moment with various symptoms which could or could not be the virus but can we get a test? Nope.

Of the 4,322 positive results today, I would bet we could add another 2 or 3,000 on top of that every day for people who cannot get tested and for those who are still awaiting results.

The country cant afford another national lockdown and to be honest I dont think people would respect it anyway.

In terms of AT, I am surprised they have gone to all the effort and expense of Octoberfest and Scarefest given the fragile state of things at the moment. Personally, I would have held off until next year.

The main problem with all of these 'lockdowns' and even the local lockdowns, the masses aren't complying and police are not enforcing the law/rules to the degree they need to be. Fines are not high enough (a £60 fine is not going to scare away a potential first offender). It's hard to expect a cultural change overnight, however in light of a global pandemic perhaps attitudes need to change and a stricter approach needs to be taken.

People currently don't comply because there is little risk of facing any consequences (apart from contracting Covid-19), since the start government has not taken a strict approach with enforcing the restrictions, and local police forces have shown a rather cautious approach to enforcing the law on the public.

Obviously testing capacity is an issue and it's rather appalling that 7 months into this pandemic it doesn't seem like enough has been done to improve this.

The masses are complying, it is a minority of idiots who are not following the rules, rich and poor, young and old, black and white.
Testing was always going to be an issue after the summer holidays, and going back to school.
The fact that those in power didn't plan for it properly is no surprise.
Boris didn't even go to the first few COBRA meetings.

It's all going to be alright, Sunak will just go and borrow another half a trillion on our behalf for his next set of initiatives. Eat out to help out worked well didn't it? Gave away a load of money to people to go and squeeze into their local Maccies and other places spreading Covid which has ultimately contributed to the rise in cases. Queues outside the local KFC every Mon, Tue, Wed when the offer was on and now it's very very quiet in there on the same days now that the offer has finished. Thought the scheme was going to get everyone in the habit of frequenting these places? Plonker.

The problem is, some people think covid is a hoax and not real, some people are still portraying this as nothing more than a flu.

Since the start of this pandemic, we have had Tesco delivering our shopping and until two weeks ago, the delivery drivers have been very good at social distancing. On our last two deliveries, I've had two new delivery drivers that I've not seen before and the social distancing was awkward as I had to remind them to stay back. Their response was that they have had a recent covid test and that they are negative. As far as I'm concern, a test is only valid at the time of the test, you could have picked up covid and be spreading it the moment you leave the testing station  My wife did phone up Tesco to complain, the lady on the end of the phone had no idea what we were talking about with regards to social distancing and covid

My neighbour got talking to me (social distancing out side from over the garden wall) she was blaming the youngsters, she was saying that us oldies (referring to her husband and herself) are very good at taking percussions etc...I had to bite my tongue and roll my eyes inside my mind as from day one of the lock down, they never had followed the rules or social distanced, as well as they have been having visitors over when it wasn't allowed  The trouble with people, they never take personal responsibility, it is always someone else's fault.

The other justification that I hear is that even though the case numbers are rising, the death rates are low. Please remember the death rates suddenly dropped when the government change how they reported the death figures which only includes deaths within 28 days of a positive test. This daily figure don't include covid deaths after 28 days of a positive test. Bear in mind that people can be in hospital for 2 to 4 months seriously ill from covid before they either recover or eventually die. So the daily death rates are misleading and not entirely accurate.
I still think the main problem with this is the way that our government have handled this pandemic. The actions taken and advice given has been purely based on political agenda and nothing to do with the science.

The way I've seen it, their staggery has been

Stop the NHS becoming overwhelmed (lack of beds, lack of PPE) > Go out and save the economy > Lets go into lock down during the two week over the half term (This won't hurt the economy as most people will be taking a break and we can't allow people to have fun, but they can return to work once this is all over)

Well here in the Rhondda we are in local lockdown and I was shocked last night in the pub when the police actually turned up. They went to every pub in the village and the village next to ours checking all the pubs/clubs if they are up to date and following guidelines. Now I thought I’d never see that happen but obviously they got to do the checks.

There isn’t any dispute that it’s getting weaker, look at the cases in Europe right now, huge daily cases and hardly anyone in hospital with it.

Interestingly the country now doing the best is Sweden, they followed our original plan and it worked, unfortunately Boris bottled it and followed the scientists who didn’t even agree with each other. (where have we heard this before? Global warming?)
When will we learn, don’t listen to scientists, they have their own agenda to gain funding.

I don't believe there is any believed correlation currently between decreased hospitalisations and virus mutation. The belief is that it is affecting a portion of the population who are statistically less likely to require hospitalisation.

Scientists don't agree with each other when they're doing their job correctly. The entire purpose of scientific research is to investigate where ideas don't work, so having different views is essential to this.

Funding is gained entirely through publication count and internal politics, which is typically limited to personal politics not some research agenda.

Scientists do agree on global warming. It's
not the scientists who have their own agenda, it's the big oil companies with far higher budgets. They are basically doing what cigarette manufacturers did in the mid 20th century by claiming that scientists are wrong and their product is safe so that they can make more money. Global warming is real whether or not you believe scientists. Anyway, this discussion is about Covid. Politicians have a difficult balancing act between public health research by the NHS test sites and hospitals, Research by scientists studying Covid and financial advisors who want to make sure the economy is safe. Whilst Sweden tried to stay open, many businesses still had to close because they rely on suppliers in countries who had gone into lockdown.

I’m at a theme park now (doesn’t matter which 1) but the abuse the staff is getting is totally wrong all they doing is asking guests to wear masks in shops, Queue lines and on rides but they refusing or using a excuse like Asthma. My Asthma is quite bad but I’m still wearing a mask and keeping my distance.

There's some confusion around excemption rules with some people believing certain conditions are automatic excemptions, rather then what's actually the case (it's based on inability due to a disability/condition rather then the disability/condition itself).

Abuse about masks has become normal. At work (a college) i keep getting rudely told to go away when reminding students of the masks on in buildings.

Had trouble keeping a straight face mid week due to a student missing the principals ID badge. Giving him a torrent of abuse for being reminded to wear his mask.
    Now if it happens
    1st offence warning
    2nd letter to parent
    3rd 1 day suspension
4th and greater. to be dealt with by senior manager.

I was told to get out of a takeaway by me recently because I didn’t have a mask. I’m never going to be anti mask I fully understand why we finally are being told to wear one. But I don’t take kindly to one day walking into a takeaway no mask no problems to 48 hours later after coming out of a pub where a mask isn’t needed to then be shouted at because I don’t have mask and that I can’t be served without one. I think sometimes people just need to take a chill out sometimes and not overreact. It’s 2020 and nothing makes sense anymore I can’t make sense out of anything, the pub closes and hour earlier for whatever reason they think that’s wise. I still can’t get my head round the difference an hour makes but hey ho it’s going to be like this for a while.

The pubs closing a hour earlier will make no difference as they will go out earlier. At my work mon to Fri they got 3 shifts currently (mornings, afternoons and nights) which is working well but then on Saturday overtime is available to all shifts 7am to 12pm which really makes shifts pointless.
I think it’s gonna be even worst next month with the temperatures Dropping so everyone will be inside.

I’ve given up being nice to people now in shops and takeaways not wearing masks, whether they do anything or not you have been told to wear one so deal with it.
We had one simple task, follows the rules and because people are taking the **** we are now were we are, the government are not to blame, the public are, hardly anyone is following the rules and using every excuse in the book why the rules don’t apply to them.
