Plus they haven't taken in consideration Brexit and the Government messing up the roll out. Must point out that the vaccine calculator is independent from the NHS and the government and is not an official site. I think it the same site that calculated the amount of loo rolls required during the loo roll shortage.

Jess and I'm are nearly 3 months late for our Flu vaccine which we are hopefully finally getting tomorrow (got the phone call today and fingers cross they turn up with it)
 
I posted on here a couple of weeks ago about the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, that one is expected to come online end of January and is a one dose vaccine that can be manufactured easily and stored in a normal fridge, that could be a real game changer and speed things up a bit.

In other news my area has a case rate of 52 per 100000 and guess what our worthwhile review brings today? Yep still in tear 3, what a joke.

The J&J vaccine started a 2 dose arm to its trial a couple of months ago, no one knows why and it might be that the single dose regime does work but it’s curious. The tech they are using is similar to the Oxford vaccine.

Never say never but in general if a virus does not cause permanent natural immunity in normal infection (hep A, hep b, HPV etc) then you tend to need a multi dose regime in vaccination.

As for the calculator for when you get the vaccine, ignore it. As it stands it could be any amount of time, as Craig says the variables are too crazy. That said it’s clear seasonality is a thing with this virus as it stayed suppressed throughout summer so I imagine if we can get a majority vaccinated before next September we are ok.
 
To speed up vaccination they are going to employ scutters. Here is Mr stabhim.

So next year they are looking at testing in schools. Will the next step be to give the students the vaccine as standard?

They have key group to vaccinate first. After that everyone over 16.

At the moment vaccination is on a small scale. However that is not going to be the case for long.

The whole "testing in schools" thing is a farce. Why did the government wait until the day before term ends to make the announcement, thus giving teachers absolutely no time to plan or implement it? What utter incompetence.

The question i have is. Where are the test kits and when are the staff doing the test going to be trained.

It will be lateral flow testing so there isn’t a whole lot of training required as they are designed for self testing. It’s just a gimmick anyway as they don’t want to u-turn on the schools thing. They announced mass testing in tier 3 areas at the end of the last lockdown, I live in a tier 3 area that has been tier 3 since before the lockdown and we haven’t seen any mass testing occurring.

They were too busy sending out legal letters demanding that schools remain open on one of the least productive weeks of the year, all the while knowing they were going to be telling them to close/reduce physical learning after Christmas.

So to avoid being front page news and looking like absolute hypocrites, they release the news on Thursday when the tier news comes out ensuring the school news isn't the headline. It's all just a vanity project to them to avoid looking like idiots, they don't care if teachers have to scramble around trying to arrange something on the day or the day before they break up. It's pathetic, it really is.

Ours started, and what a roaring success it's been. This is despite no slots being available, so no idea what's happening on that front!

I’m still waiting to hear more about the 17 mutations in the new U.K. variant. I’ve seen a study which has shown the change to the spike protein and it’s not good news.

Some of the spikes on the virus have bent themselves inwards in an attempt to evade any antibodies latching on to them and preventing infection.

Technically a vaccine should still work as there are lots of other spikes on the virus which so far haven’t changed but it’s a worrying development.

The mutations may affect the new mRNA vaccines more than the Oxford one as the mRNA ones are based on the spike found on the first variant which came out of Wuhan.

The Oxford one is based on the same principle as the flu vaccine where the receiver gets an inactivated virus and the body builds its own antibodies. Personally for me this would be the one I would be going for- once they can sort out the correct doseage.

One thing is clear however, this virus will behave like the flu virus and we will need a shot every year to protect us from the current strain in circulation.

If it was acting like the Flu virus it would be far more genetically diverse by now. It’s funnily enough acting like a coronavirus. That tweet is a prediction of the spike changes based on inputting the genetic code into a computer, the proteins haven’t yet been seen in the wild.

That said I suspect repeat vaccination will be a thing, however mutations are not always a bad thing. In general virus’s do better when they don’t severely harm their host as someone laid up in bed (or dead) isn’t a great vector for transmission. There are 4 other widely circulating Coronavirus in the human population and based on the recent SARS outbreaks it’s starting to look like they all could have been severe when they emerged but mutated to less severe more transmissible varieties of themselves.

As for the type of vaccine, the adapted virus vectors are good for one go but then the body becomes immune to the vector. Some of the Flu vaccines are immune boosted protein based and a few of those are in development.

“ experimental data suggests mutation N501Y can increase ACE2 receptor affinity (Starr et al. 2020) and P681H, one of 4 residues comprising the insertion that creates a furin cleavage site between S1 and S2 in spike. The S1/S2 furin cleavage site of SARS-CoV-2 is not found in closely related coronaviruses and has been shown to promote entry into respiratory epithelial cells and transmission in animal models (Hoffmann, Kleine-Weber, and Pöhlmann 2020; Peacock et al. 2020; Zhu et al. 2020). N501Y has been associated with increased infectivity and virulence in a mouse model (Gu et al. 2020). Both N501Y and P681H have been observed independently but not to our knowledge in combination before now.”

Which suggests that not only could or it Increase infection in the respiratory organs but also possibly increase the virulence (serverity). No wonder the gov are worried about this.

A strain with a similar mutation was picked up earlier in South Africa. Studies suggest not only does it infect younger people but they suffer from a more severe form of Covid even if they have no existing comorbidities.

I sincerely hope not.

Whilst the government’s apparent splitting of the north/south in the post-lockdown-2 weeks has been questionable at very best, is hardly the fault of those who live in the south, hardly something that the vast majority of those in the south agreed with, and it’s not as if those in the south were sat watching the north and laughing, enjoying watching them be placed under more stringent restrictions.

The south have now spent a grand total of one day in tier three (except London), and suddenly is now being pushed much further into the doom and gloom.

Those northerners who on social media are now rubbing their hands together in glee (an absolute tiny minority, I’m sure), are quite frankly vile.

We need to be united as a country against our appallingly inept government, not divided.
