This is exactly what my earlier post was getting at, I do feel that this is not simply going to blow over and go away, this is probably going to change the way we live in the foreseeable future.

This won't mutate as fast as a standard flu virus as it has RNA checking components.

You could argue that being locked up in quarantine is making people human guinea pigs in a scientific experiment too. It's simply impossible to say at this point which strategy makes any difference, when for all we know all that work reducing infection rates could go to pot as soon as people are free to go about their lives again. So I wouldn't say guinea pigs, but doing what government medical teams believe is the correct course of action to take under what is a very difficult situation.

As you said, it's very much a wait and see approach now in the case of both strategies.

I actually think this and I'm not a Boris fan or a tory. I think they might be on to something. We are looking at building immunity and other countries are probably just delaying the inevitable. Imagine it comes back next year and year after and we are all fine and they have repeats. That is one possible outcome of going into lock down.

Who knows.
 
I have some concerns though about just letting it run through.

1. Hundreds of thousands may die. Apparently doctors are already saying parts of the NHS look like a war zone and that we have 2 weeks before it is full to capacity.

2. We dont know much about this so called immunity. There may be no immunity. The immunity may only last a few weeks. The virus may behave like others in that catching it a second time results in a more deadly infection.

3. A study published yesterday in Hong Kong showed that perfectly healthy people prior to catching the virus, who recovered, have been left with scarring in the lungs which they think will be permanent and these people now struggle walking very far. We dont yet know what permanent damage the virus may do to the body. A Dr in Seattle said they recovered RNA from the heart, liver and kidneys as well as the lungs.


I understand the concept of herd immunity, but there are still too many unknowns to feel comfortable with the approach the government is taking. It feels like as if they have put their hands up in the air, said "we surrender" ....
 
I know I may have a slight penchant for being a bit dramatic and maybe thinking the worst is going to happen (It usually does BTW)

Hate to break it to you but every human on the planet is a guinea pig right now. This is an unknown virus and the first time we have had a major outbreak in the modern interconnected world. Each country is trying different approaches and each is being looked at by global scientists.
 
A friend of mine has it. It hasn't been diagnosed, as he can't get a test, but he has every symptom, each aligning perfectly and is now in isolation.

He said it wasn't really that bad, that the 'shortness of breath' comes from a bout of intensive coughing that subsided fairly quickly, and otherwise, he was just achy and knackered for a couple of days. This will probably me the experience for most healthy people, coupled with extended boredom in the weeks following.

Hopefully this is the sort of experience that most of those infected have. If it is, then hopefully the strain on the world's health services might not be as bad as some are fearing.

Also, I was reading online about a Chinese epidemiologist who helped contain the SARS outbreak, and he's said that the pandemic could be over by June if the world takes the right measures.

I completely agree with Dave here.

Different countries are trying different approaches and our government is choosing this particular one for the time-being with the limited knowledge that we have of the behaviour of the virus. The idea seems to be to allow enough people to contract it that we largely develop an immunity to it within the country eventually. Obviously they don't want everyone to get it straight away as the hospitals wouldn't cope if enough people developed serious symptoms at the same time so they're trying to allow it to spread a bit more slowly. Is it the right approach? No-one knows for sure at this time but you can understand the theory behind the idea. However, I think they need to have a big media campaign to warn old people and other vulnerable people to just self isolate as much as possible as I don't think they've got the message yet. Even if it's just the one shop a week instead of 3-4 or even better get family to drop off shopping to them.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm not too bothered if I get it as most will probably get it eventually so why not just contract it and get it out of the way (all being well). On a side-note, I personally think they've overdone it a bit by cancelling all of the football and stuff this early (the football people, not the government). They should have just warned the vulnerable not to attend with partial refunds for season tickets and I think 90% would have heeded the warnings.
 
Didn't the tories say they were going to review inheritance tax in the budget we just had? And yet, no mention of it.
Theory is that this is how they plan to save the economy... with the massive influx of dead old people's money.

If nothing else, all the old people dying off may well be the thing that solves our housing crisis!

Another utterly dumb and untrue comment. Do you actually believe crap like that? Wasn't said, was not the meaning conveyed, just bullshit that will scare people. Stop it.

Here's an excellent article explaining the thinking and aims of the UK response. A response designed, supervised and implemented by the most experienced and qualified of people who all know infinately more than any of us about this and likely outcomes to any given response.

Our opinions are frankly worthless and the very best thing we can do is exactly what we are told. You do not know better.

And as for us being guinea pigs, yes, of course you are. You are all of the time because the future is not predictable and the state (or others) in one way or another is making decisions it can not know the full repercussions of, the same as every time you visit any Dr or hospital for diagnosis and treatments. It's all just very well educated guesses.
