Disneyland Paris: General Discussion

Disney may be getting the park up to scratch ready for 2017 however it's not all good news at DLP after they posted a record annual loss during their last financial year (ending September 2016). Net loss for 2015/16 was €858 million and guest number were down from 14.8 million to 13.4 million.

Catherine Powell, Présidente of Euro Disney S.A.S. has said:

"Disneyland Paris had an exceptionally challenging year. We have been impacted by various external factors that have significantly affected the tourism business in the Paris region.
In this adverse environment, revenue decreased 7%. This, together with the increase in costs driven by our future growth strategy of continually improving the guest experience plus the costs of additional security measures, resulted in a significant decrease in our operating performance for the fiscal year.
Despite this challenging environment, we are encouraged by the attendance of over 13 million guests that visited the parks this year and by the improved satisfaction ratings for our newly renovated hotels and attractions. Our upcoming 25th Anniversary will be an important milestone for the Group and together with our talented"

However this month The Walt Disney Company have agreed to waive two years of royalty and management
fees to provide the EuroDisney Group additional liquidity.

:)

€858 isn't a bad loss tbf ;)

Also, how does a park which attracts 13.4million guests a year and charges the earth for everything make a loss? It's not like they've invested in anything substantial either.

Ooops! Corrected. ;)

They had to pay a €565 million impairment charge on their assets which they have not done in previous financial years. Revenue was down 7% from €1,373 million to €1,278 million.

:)

Spike makes a very good point. 13 million visitors is significantly more than any other European park resort.

So what on earth are they spending their money on?

I've visited parks abroad which are almost always dead and I think to myself "how the hell does this place keep going" yet they do still keep opening year on year. DLP though always seems to have plenty of people there all paying through the nose. Where is this money going?!

The millions of debt the park has been lumbered with since opening I'd wager...

I'd also reckon it runs on a high operational budget as well, given the amount if everything the resort as a whole has... Loads of staff required even in off peak times...

Doesn't the French government take a huge cut out of the proffits as well? Or did I hear that in a dream nightmare?

Too much debt and they built too many hotel rooms up front at DLP. So it's never been able to get rid of those problems.

Basically from my understanding the French government made them build the whole resort up front rather than building the hotels in stages. Then when they opened a big recession was in full flow so people couldn't afford to go so like stated above, ever since then they have barely been making enough to cover the interest on the loans.
Also I think the French wanted it to be a French company resulting in Disney not stepping in sooner to help.

Not long now until Big Thunder Mountain re-opens and Looopings have got some photos showing off how it is looking. Here are a few of the photos but follow the link to see more:

It's looking like a brand new ride, brilliant to see. Almost every part of the theming has either been refurbished or replaced.

We went in may this year, but booked about may time last year. At the time of booking the list of rides being down for this year was not announced.

When it was announced I was gutted to read about btm. It was the one ride I was looking forward to take my 4 year old son on.

We have booked to go early next december and can't wait to get on this ride. Btm is one of my favourite rides. So much fun

I am thrilled to see what is one of the world's most beautiful rollercoasters looking so great!

To paraphrase Not the 9'Oclock News, "nice theming, shame about the ride."

Makes no sense, that they spend all this money on making Frontierland look beautiful again. And the same goes for Adventure Isle... yet they're destroying the beautiful Space Mountain with a Star Wars overlay... :(

The Star Wars overlay is temporary though so I don't see it as a major issue.
