Fantasy Island

Another new ride has been announced today for the 2020 season “Firebowl” which is basically a tea cup ride, similar to the one at Efteling I assume.
 
I have just dug out photos of a model of Fantasy Island with Phase 1 (Pyramid and early outdoor rides) and with an unbuilt Phase 2 in the car park, with a hotel, monorail and indoor water park.

Today we share the vision of John Woodward, for the first and second phases of Fantasy Island, Ingoldmells, ultimately quite different to what was eventually built.

Phase 1 (closer to the sea, at the nearside of the photo) was largely built as planned; with the main pyramid, Millennium Coaster and various outdoor rides including Fantasy Flume and Volcanic Eruption.

In phase 1, some elements were planned to be different, notably the large building next to the Log Flume, which was intended to be an aquarium. This site is now largely open and contains some of the park’s larger outdoor rides.

Phase 2 is almost entirely different, with Jubilee Odyssey (now Odyssey) missing entirely. Instead, there were to be three further pyramids, the smallest hosting an Italian restaurant and the two larger ones hosting a substantial indoor waterpark and a hotel complex.

Each was to be built among a sprawling landscaped area containing a number of event spaces, themed elements and a car park, with the entire site connected via a monorail.

Wow; Fantasy Island actually looks like it was intended to be pretty extravagant when first built! What happened that made them cancel phase 2 and build the likes of Odyssey instead?
 
I always remember when it opened seeing concepts with more than one pyramid. In the end we’ve ended up with the nicely themed pyramid and some outdoor rides, and then a collection of random fair rides almost round the back of the pyramid. At least now Mellors are investing in the place and the park looked a lot nicer on my last trip than a few years back.


However it’s never gonna be a world class place due to the market and the type of people Skegness will always attract.

There are definitely some smooth ones out there, but they’re incredibly boring and don’t have inversions (Temple of the Night Hawk at Phantasialand, Vogel
Rok at Efteling).

That said, there are some pretty uninspiring straight sections on Millennium...!! I must agree that for a Vekoma with inversions, it’s pretty smooth :).
