So, if I asked you to list your top 5 albums/singles (including compilations) of 2013, what would they be?

I'll list mine when I have thought about them. I have 24 of the damn things to choose from.

Black Sabbath - 13
Iron Maiden - Maiden England '88
David Bowie - The Next Day
Ghost - Infestissumam
Alice In Chains - The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here

That's all I can think of.

Peace - In Love
Ghost - Infestissumam
Steven Wilson - The raven that refused to sing (and other stories)
Arcade Fire - Reflektor
Arctic Monkeys - AM

This year has been awesome for music!

I've only heard around 60 albums from this year, so there are still a lot that I am interested in hearing; I haven't listened to any new albums in a few months. My favourites that I have heard are, with their respective genres (if you're interested in hearing any of them):

1. MCII by Mikal Cronin (power pop/garage rock)
2. ...Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age (hard rock)
3. Pearl Mystic by Hookworms (neo-psychedelia)
4. We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace And Magic by Foxygen (60's revival psychedelic rock)
5. Migrant by The Dear Hunter (prog rock/indie rock)
6. Wakin on a Pretty Daze by Kurt Vile (indie rock)
7. Sunbather by Deafheaven (black metal/shoegaze)
8. Kveikur by Sigur Ros (post-rock)
9. Amok by Atoms for Peace (electronica/experimental rock)
10. Shrine of New Generation Slaves by Riverside (progressive metal)

They're all in my sig as well.

EDIT- if Almanac by Widowspeak was released this year (I'm not too sure if it is or isn't), then it would be my second favourite of the year.

1. Daggers by The Defiled (Metal)
2. Power by Nekrogoblikon (Rather silly goblin metal)
3. In The Navy (single) by Alestorm (Possibly even sillier pirate metal)
4. From Beer To Eternity by Ministry (Industrial metal)
5. Nom D'une Pipe! by Pensees Nocturnes (Neoclassical depressive doom metal)

Off the top of my head:

Dream Theater - Dream Theater
Stereophonics - Grafiti on the Train
Gabrielle Aplin - English Rain

And probably some others, but those are the only ones that have particularly excited me :)

Kings of Leon - Mechanical Bull
Manic Street Preachers - Rewind the Film
Stereophonics - Graffiti on the Train

There are still a few albums I've yet to listen to fully, so I may add to the list at a later date.

:)

Reflektor (song and album) - Arcade Fire
Random Access Memories & Get Lucky - Daft Punk
Opposites - Biffy Clyro
Days Are Gone - Haim
The 1975 - The 1975

EDIT: Didn't read 'Top 5' at first. Amended.

Its hard to impress me music wise, but a work colleague mentioned a band to me on Friday and I've been utterly sold on them..

CHVRCHES - The Bones Of What You Believe (Special Edition)

Quite possibly the best purchase I've made in a long time from iTunes. They're a Scottish based band fronted by Lauren Mayberry, and they specialise in Synth-Pop style music. It screams that old-skool 80s feel from the amount of Synth used. Fave songs from the album are The Mother We Share, Lies & Gun.

Here is a link to their album on iTunes, highly recommend giving them a try.

I laughed.

LOL, can't believe I wrote that. Considering almost half of the album is made up of ballads, that was a poor call.

Anyway, after a bit of reconsidering, I would probably add Settle by Disclosure and Run the Jewels by Run the Jewels to my top ten. Both are top albums that I forgot about when making my list.

Oh I totally forgot about Avenge Sevenfold's new album, Hail To The King.

I'm not their biggest fan, but its a pretty good album!

Walks in to thread.... notices the people in the thread...

runs away with the opinion that Fall Out Boy's Save Rock And Roll and Pax am days are my favorite albums of the year.

To be fair there's only been one amazing album for me this year which is arctic monkeys- AM. Don't get me wrong though there has been some other good albums but nothing amazing

It's because you haven't listened to enough.

I've got to give it to Moonface - 'Julia With Blue Jeans On'. Absolutely beautiful album from the genius behind Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown. Marked change from his previous (huge variety of) styles, all stripped down to bare grand piano and vocals.

Have a listen to the title track:

Re. Chvrches; I was a big fan of The Mother We Share, Recover and Gun before the album came out and so bought it based on that, but then was disappointed to find I felt the rest of the album was largely uninspired filler.

Nobody makes good albums anymore that's my problem

I'd disagree with that. You just need to know where to look.

This is very true. You've got to search around and try and go out of your comfort zone to find some of the best music.

Try and check out some year end lists, and see what you like. As a good starting point, try one of the aggregators:

http://www.albumoftheyear.org/list/summary/2013/

Although I think they're rubbish, to be honest, they are definitely a good starting point.

Here's some songs you should definitely try:

And my personal favourite song of the year:

And that's only this year. Other recent years have also been fantastic, mainly 2011, 2007 and 2009. And it's also only rock music, just thought you might appreciate it more.

All good songs my overall point was that bands aren't making good full albums the songs are all average with a few good songs that's why I haven't been to a gig this year
