Forum Quick Questions

In the last few days the forum has become really slow to load on my laptop. It's fine on my phone so it's evidently a me problem but i don't know what the solution is. Have restarted the computer. Am using Google Chrome on a Mac. Hesitant to clear all cookies if that means i'm logged out of everything else (and no other site is having the issue) so any suggestions appreciated!

You can delete individual cookies in Chrome (use this link to be lazy!). I’ve not noticed anything myself (also a Mac user), although one other member seems to have a similar sort of problem with a mobile phone for quite a while. Sadly never got to the bottom of it though, but again it’s single device specific. Might be worth trying switching to Cloudflare as a DNS provider (that’s what I use, but others are available) to see if that makes a difference? Might be worth trying on a different internet connection too (tether to your phone maybe?) to see if there’s a difference too.

Thanks Craig. The cookies didn't resolve it but changing internet connection did. Clearing the cache seems to have resolved it on the original WiFi.

This is more of a general TS question than a forum-specific one, so feel free to move it if that’s deemed necessary, but out of pure curiosity, is the Wiki still editable?

I stumbled across a thread discussing the Wiki this morning while looking for something else, and to be honest, it reminded me that the Wiki actually existed… I had pretty much completely forgotten about it until then! Looking through the articles, it almost seems like a different era of TS now… the newest thing I could find on there was Wicker Man, and that was now built 7 years ago!

I have no personal interest in editing it (as said, I’d completely forgotten it existed until this morning), but I noticed that the last change on most pages was in 2020 or earlier and I couldn’t see any obvious way to edit pages, so I was curious to know whether the Wiki actually can still be edited. Has this feature of the site been archived by the moderators?

For the time being the Wiki is still online but the decision was made a couple of years ago to disallow any further edits. You’re completely right though, it is very much part of TS history and representative of us a few years ago, but less so now. :)

Sorry to keep churning out queries, but I have another one, having made some observations lately… has the sensitivity of the swear filter recently increased quite considerably?

I only ask because I noticed that swear words like the f-bomb are now completely asterisked out, even in the Tavern where they were previously uncensored, and I also noticed that a post in the main forum that used the word pr*ck (asterisk added to try and convey the word used without it being censored!) now had this word censored out, even though it wasn’t used in a vaguely offensive context (it was saying that “people’s ears would pr*ck up” at the mention of something, which I personally wouldn’t call offensive).

Has the sensitivity been increased recently, or am I just overthinking this? I just thought it was odd, as I seem to remember it historically being a bit more lax, particularly in the Tavern.

Nope you’re not overthinking it. The word censor has been significantly increased as part of the changes we’re bringing in as a result of the Online Safety Act. Further information and a complete rundown of changes will be coming out hopefully this week :).

I did wonder if this was the cause… are any of the proposed changes overly significant, or have they all been put into place already?

No, the only change you will notice at present is the word censor. This is mainly because there’s a lot of faff that goes into setting that up. There will still be other changes to come.

We’re trying to keep things the same as much as we can, but as mentioned in the Online Safety Act topic (and no doubt from your own browsing around other websites) it’s inevitable that some of the changes will be noticeable and are unavoidable.

We have further tweaks to make and some testing in the background to do still, but we hope to firm everything up at some point this week. We’ll then make a post summing everything up along with explanations for why the changes have had to be implemented.

Do I need my ID at hand?
