Paultons Park: General Discussion

Perhaps just a change of mind our trade marking it in case anybody else in the future they do want to build a hotel.
I was just going to post similar. If you looks their list of trademarks, they've covered hotel, campsite, lodges in the past. Paultons Hotel was trademarked in 2016. I wasn't at the event, but in the fans q&a they seemed quite adamant it wasn't for them.

Lawrence did directly answer a fan question about accommodation with something along the lines of being lucky to be based in the New Forest with lots of 3rd party options and that there were no current plans to develop anything in house. Seems fair to try and cover what they can so it's one less thing to think about should the desire or opportunity arise!

New trademark filing from Paultons:

Interesting that this covers Hotels seeing as they've always said it's not on their radar!

I wonder if it could be a hotel operated by a partner company instead of their own hotel? I don't know how much scope they have for expansion, and obviously they may not want to tread on anybody's toes with regards to existing local accomodation, but if they have good links already with hotel companies already then maybe there is potential for a hotel owned and run by somebody else but within the scope of turning the park in to a resort?

Ah the old Disneyland / Disneyland Hotel scenario.

At the Superfans event they said that there were no immediate or medium term plans to get into accomodation; it doesn't rule out long term. As others have suggested I think this is just brand protection, that's what trademarking is for after all.

What it does suggest, is that Paulton's believe that their future expansion, growth and investments will be at a level that needs protection.

Lagotronics Projects and Paulton's Park have officially unveiled Ghostly Manor at IAPPA.

The press release talks about how Ghostly Manor is set to become the "world's first gameplay theatre". Visitors will load into the attraction, which will then turn on an axis to reveal a new scene. This attraction is going to be entirely screen based, with one of the virtues of the ride system being touted as "no need for physical effects / targets". As expected, you shoot a gun at targets on a screen, then turn to the next scene and repeat. The companies claim that this will be a high throughput attraction, for a relatively small space.

Ghostly Manor will open in May 2025.

Full press release can be found here:

Lawrence Mancey confirmed at the Super Fans event that there will be 50/50 split of screens and physical sets. As seen below, the the ride vehicles twist to face practical sets and then very wide screens.

I was there and that's not exactly what he said (it's also not what he said in the video). He said that the set pieces would be made up of screens and some physical elements; "a hybrid". This likely be props in front, and to the side, of screens to give a feel of depth. The photos used in the Superfans presentation were for a hypothetical ride, not the actual ride and he said "not to take them literally".

"No need for physical targets" and this (taken from the press statement) "As guests shoot ghosts in each scene they accumulate a score which can be viewed at the exit of the ride.", would suggest that each scene will be screen based (with some physical elements to add depth) for Ghostly Manor.

Urg. I thought the shooty ride fad was behind us by now?
I think there’s maybe a little difference between something that is a dark ride that you move though from scene to scene which uses screens and then this which seems like it’s essentially more of an outright big arcade game than it is a traditional “ride”.

I feel that with some dark rides the shooting element can actually take away somewhat from just enjoying the ride aspect of it so I’m interested in seeing how this attraction plays out as a big screen pure shoot em up rather than it being a ride as such. I’m quite looking forward to it.

I'm a bit worried we'll end up with something resembling Ninjago at Legoland which is effectively just an XBOX Kinect game. I'm hoping there'll be enough physical aspects in this to offer something beyond home entertainment.

Sorry but I can ride this at home by launching Call of Duty - I go on dark rides to go on a ride through different physical environments not just point a shooter at screens

and yet Toy Story Mania is one of the most popular rides at Disneyworld, Disneyland and Tokyo Disney and has a non-IP version (Maus au Chocolat at Phantasialand). These aren't "dark rides" they are shooting games with a ride base.

I'd look at it as going on a shooting ride to shoot things and play a game, which is a separate thing to going on a dark ride.

Was no chance of a "proper" tracked dark ride fitting in the building this is going in (presuming it's the 4D Cinema?).

Shooting dark rides are still popular. Popcorn Revenge has had a good response to it, so the demand is definitely there. Especially for kids.

I think this looks fantastic, shooters have a bad rap because we have bad shooters. If I'm going to trust a park to change that it'd be here. There's certainly a place for shooters, especially in a family park,

Surprised they are going with a first of it's kind, although I'm sure most elmliments are pretty well tried and tested. I'm guessing there's been at least some level of incentive from the manufacturers so the industry can see it as a showcase. Love seeing Paultons pushing on with something new.

...and Call of Duty is rated 18, hardly paulton's market...family market, riding is completely optional for grown ups!
Splatoon, Fortnite, etc then, there are plenty of shooters for kids at home. But I understand the arguments made elsewhere, it's not a dark ride it is just a shooter and I'm not the target audience.
