Re: Quick Questions 2013
Wasn't too sure where to put this...
Just wondering if anybody 'in the know' can answer - is RMT's speed variable? If so is there literally just some sort of speed dial?
I have wondered for a while as I remember one occasion a few seasons ago it kept slowing down to extremely minimal speeds (almost stopping at the top of the helix into the tunnel) and speeding up to what felt like a lot faster than normal in parts. It seemed like it was being done on purpose by an over enthusiastic ride op.

Re: Quick Questions 2013
RMT does have a variable speed in the station, and I think the final corner too. The ride doesn't have automatic parking or anything fancy like that, so you have turn the power gradually up and down to guide it into place and line it up with the airgates at the end of the ride (Though certain operators are a little haphazard at this, often resulting in having to send the train all the way aound again
). If I remember rightly this is done with something called the potentiometer, which controls the current going into the pickups, so essentially yes as you say, a big dial
The rest of the ride I believe is pre-defined, so it speeds up at certain points, and slows down at others. I think a lot of things can affect how well it runs though. Sometimes the ride operates with motors or drive tyres missing. Obviously, if this happens then it will naturally run slower than usual as there's less oomph to move the train around.
I understand that the speed was quite heavily throttled after the accident though (No doubt to try and prevent a repeat occurrence), but I'm not aware of it being altered again since then

It probably saves you from the mayhem at closing time in the regular car park, where all exit lanes converge into one!

Re: Quick Questions 2013
If I'm honest (As me and Dave we're discussing yesterday actually
) I think the express parking is just a farce. Paying an extra £10 rather than using a free Monorail service, or short wal. The road still becomes a bottleneck at exit time, if not worse, as you have to try and force your way into the queue rather than just joining it.
I usually park up in the hotel carparks, and catch the Monorail down to the entrance. Yesterday the shutters at Towers Street remained down until more or less 9, so there were already queues formed very early on, and as a result most people were already queuing for The Smiler when we got there.
Personally I don't think it's worth £10 extra at all, but obviously it's the individuals choice at the end of the day
