Ride/park accidents in 2013/2014

A girl in Taiwan has died after stepping off a coaster and immediately suffering from a heart attack which is believed to have been caused by sheer terror from the experience:

A 17-year-old girl dropped dead after a terrifying roller coaster ride brought on a heart attack, say medics in Taiwan.

Thrill-seeker Wu Yaxia had just stepped off the Screaming Condor ride at the Leo Foo Village Theme Park at Guangxi Town in Hsinchu County when she turned pale and keeled over, say witnesses.

Paramedics at the scene said Wu had died of heart failure brought on by "extreme terror" caused by the Swiss made ride - created by Swiss firm Intamin Worldwide based in Wollerau. The firm is best known for creating extreme thrill rides and roller coasters worldwide.

Passengers are sent straight up a vertical track on the ride before hurtling straight down a 185ft corkscrew at up to 70mph. Although it takes only 51 seconds the ride has become a major crowd puller because of the terror it inspires.

"It is a truly terrifying experience. You feel like you're going to fall straight into the ground," said one fan.

A park spokesman said:"We regret what happened but passengers are warned very clearly what to expect and are told to keep away if they have any health problems."

A five year old in Australia has been injured at a fairground. There's an article here about the incident.
 
Five year old english girl drowned at a Water Park in Sharm El Sheikh, recently. It's all over the news.

A hearts and diamonds / round up by the looks of it. Looks like the platform structure under the ride connecting it to the paybooth is what has given way, not the ride itself, but I imagine that the jolt from that fall would be enough to throw the riders around. No restraints while riding these.

S&S's crane coaster called "Tranan" is believed to be involved in an accident in which it seems two trains collided. The ride will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
 
As reported by TPR, Arlington PD confirm that there has been a death at Six Flags Over Texas. According to DFW, someone was thrown from the Texas Giant (RMC hybrid).

A very rare occurrence and very sad news. Looks as though RMC will be under scrutiny in this as well as SF.

We are deeply saddened to share that earlier this evening an adult woman died in the park while on the Texas Giant. Park medical staff and local paramedics responded immediately. Since the safety of our guests and employees is our number one priority, the ride has been closed pending further investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time.

Double post, but there seems to have been a serious accident at Cedar Point too on their Shoot the Rapids ride. According to the Sandusky Register, one of the boats flipped backwards on the lift hill whilst full of riders. :eek:

Up to 10 people may have suffered injuries Friday evening when Cedar Point's Shoot the Rapids ride experienced a serious malfunction, according to multiple witnesses at the scene.

Sometime around 6:30 p.m., a Shoot the Rapids boat was ascending the first lift hill when the ride malfunctioned, sending the boat backwards and into the entry chute, witnesses said. The entry chute is hemmed in by concrete, and the chute itself is filled with water.

Witnesses said the boat either flipped on its side or upside down — details on that are still unconfirmed. Bystanders rushed into the water to turn the boat upright, witnesses said.

Matthew Orr, 26, of Euclid, was at the scene. Orr said about nine people jumped into the water, about waist-deep, to turn the boat right-side up. Orr said it appeared all the seats were full. A Shoot the Rapids boat can hold 10 riders.

Orr said one woman appeared to have suffered severe head injuries. He also said it appears some of the riders were submerged for a few minutes before rescuers could correct the boat. The riders included adults and children, Orr said.

The details could not immediately be confirmed by Cedar Point officials. Park spokesman Bryan Edwards said he was still working on gathering details, and refused to take a moment to confirm what multiple witnesses have said.

A witness at the scene also provided the Register a picture of what appears to be bystanders working to flip the Shoot the Rapids ride back over.

"One of the cars ... came down off that hill, and people were still in it," Orr said. "They were trapped.

"We jumped in and helped them get out," he said. "If we didn't help, I don't even know what would have happened.

"It took nine or 10 people to pull the car up," Orr said. "We had the car sitting sideways."

Orr said the riders were still belted into the car when rescuers worked to turn it over. "I'm positive," he said, adding that the children on the ride "appeared scared to death."

Sandusky firefighters said they have received no calls from Cedar Point tonight requesting assistance.

Cedar Point has nurses and paramedics at the park, Sandusky firefighters said.

The medical conditions of the victims remains unknown.

By 7 p.m., Cedar Point police were standing guard at all entry points to the Shoot the Rapids ride. By 8 p.m., police had completely cleared the scene of bystanders.

UPDATED 9 p.m.: Firelands Regional Medical Center staff said one person who was involved in the crash on Shoot the Rapids has arrived at the hospital for treatment.
