Russia vs NATO

"To be honest I can see this war lasting a long time...I really don't think we can speculate how it's going to end".
Make your mind up!
That's two different statements, I think it will last a while and I don't see what will bring it to said end.

This to me clearly demonstrates Putin’s mindset and his lack of any care when it comes to life. Anyone who thinks he wouldn’t use nuclear weapons is just simply deluded. Even the experts and people who have been close to him now acknowledge that he would. Hoping that NATO does not implement a no fly zone from todays events as that will kick things off big time. They might now given the risk of a nuclear power plant exploding is just as big as a nuclear strike on a member state.

Is anyone else feeling really nervous about this? They've captured Europe's largest nuclear power plant, and there are fears of a Chernobyl 2.0. :(

Both the Russian military on the ground and the staff that run the plant will want stable reactors, as they all know the devastation of nuclear materials in the environment.

There will be one of 2 things happening.

1) the staff will carry on with normal operations and the Russian troops leaves them to keep it running.

2) Russian military have taken Nuclear power station operators with them and replaced staff with Russian staff.

I think number 1 is the more likely option.

The one thing that does worry me is accident hit by ordinance destined for somewhere else or a aircraft being downed onto the facility.

He’s not doing a great job at not destroying it though, is he

Stuff can be rebuilt though. A Nuclear incident cannot be undone.

To be clear I'm not seeking to validate his strategy at all, it's appalling. What I'm saying is that making Ukraine unfit for human habitation does not fit with any of the narrative both from the Kremlin and from we know is happening.

He doesn’t care about Ukraine. For all he cares he could flatten it. This is about the shift of global power and Russia against the west. Ukraine unfortunately is the catalyst for this event.

Just breaking in Sky News and as I have feared that the sanctions will push him over the edge :

Putin: Western sanctions akin to declaration of war

Vladimir Putin has warned that Western sanctions on Russia are akin to a declaration of war, as he defended his invasion of Ukraine.

In comments on state television, Mr Putin said Russia wanted Ukraine to be "demilitarised", adding that the country should have a neutral status.

Further details also now here:

If Putin feels this a declaration of war against Russia god knows where this will end up.

He’s been saying that from the start, you do have a habit of selectively reading news sources to confirm your own bias.

Putin is dangerous, I’m not saying things couldn’t escalate but at the moment all this is rhetoric. He might be crazy but he does know that America can and will destroy him if they have to.

I’ve not seen that anywhere until this afternoon.

Ps. news sources I read are varied rather than select few but usually sky news, bbc, itv, interfax, guardian, AP, Reuters….

This is a bit worrying. Next he will announce the west has declared war due to the sanctions

One of his ministers said on Twitter two days ago to be careful as economic wars usually turn into real ones.

Essentially yes the west has declared war on Russia. Like Biden said, we had two options, WW3 or sanctions.

Why invade Ukraine and not Latvia, Estonia or Finland in that case?

Ask Putin but one of the reasons they wants Crimea was for easy access to the med sea. He may go for Finland, he may go for Sweden, who knows what’s going on in his mind.

The west know it’s a war, that’s the point. We are also arming Ukraine so we are in this. At the moment the sanctions are working better than Putins army and he knows it, he also knows that he has just exhausted 150,000 troops and spent billions, yet NATO troops are better rested and better trained. This is why he is pushing rhetoric as somewhere deep down he knows he has poorly played this and made his power base wobble.

Now a madman cornered can be a dangerous foe but they also make mistakes, he is making lots of them.

As for Ukraine he is desperate to have it, he never got over his puppet government being kicked out a few years back. He is all about ideology. Sweden isn’t hugely likely a target, Finland maybe but he has committed so much resource to Ukraine (and still has a lot of resource in Syria) that I don’t think he could mount anything against Finland at the moment:

Bit more content coming out about the declaration of war comment:

“These sanctions that are being imposed are akin to a declaration of war but thank God it has not come to that," Putin said, speaking to a group of women flight attendants at an Aeroflot training centre near Moscow.”

I think it was Lord Dannatt a couple of days ago that said something like 'Putin has been gambling so far during this war, and at almost every step of rolling the dice he's been getting 1's instead of 6's'.
