Jokes on you mate, you're at gigg lane ;)...

On topic though...regarding the marmaliser. Is there any signs of speakers on any of the legs? As on the game there's quite a few sound effects as you go through the giggler/hypnotiser etc... Due to the ropers, I wouldn't be too sure but so far, everything else from the game has turned out accurate! :D

I hope they add some theming to the games unit but I bet they won't -_-
'Theming' shouldn't really be used just to cover up ugliness. There's not much you can realistically do with a wooden black shack like this, without caking it in objects, which would just unnecessarily attract attention. Some simple decoration (or demolition) would be better.

There has been a game stall in that area before, although I was glad to see it gone in recent years. I dislike game stalls anyway; they seem to be a relic of an outdated funfair culture that's no longer relevant to theme parks, like brass bands and circuses. :twirly: But if they make money and employ people, then...

And remember the Mars Energy Booster?

I thought they should have recycled this outlet on the X Sector island, if it is still usable. It has perfect X Sector design and would be put to better use than it ever was in the Oblivion/Black Hole queue lines.

I never thought I'd see the day.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Only 54 weeks since they started dismantling the Black Hole tent :p

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

This is a rather sad milestone, I have loved the past few weeks, with regular updates, the speculation and the drama, this pretty much marks the end of all this as most of the updates now will be ether indoor, queue line or paving. here's to testing I suppose.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Much a novice at speculation myself but if the tracks all in how is there a worlds first element in anything track wise in such a small space?

The world's first could be anything, it doesn't have to be a specific track element within the layout. It could be something to do with the trains, or it could simply be marketed as the first coaster in the world to have fourteen inversions.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Going to pop up and say...

World's first self dueling coaster.
World's most track inversions.
World's first 14 inverting coaster.
World's first Gerstlauer prototype (not as marketable but still true)

A secret track element would ruin it,besides why do people think it has to have it? only one SW has had trick track.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

have all the legs of the marm been installed now? I couldn't tell from pictures, thanks.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Yes all 5 are on now, all of which seem pretty complete, I think its just minor bits left to do to each leg now.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I personally don't believe there will be a secret element. Not at this point.

It's likely something to do with the actual track itself or even the trains, Which reminds me, Any idea of when the testing will begin, I intend to pop over and get some shots of it testing.

The area around the track becomes a no-go when the ride is testing so as soon as they have wired it up and finished any little bits in the immediate area of the track, I can see it begin testing.

Yesterday Alton released a press release. Here is an excerpt. The bold section is interesting

The Alton Towers Resort is set to launch its biggest ever rollercoaster for the 2013 season. Adding to its existing portfolio of over 50 rides and attractions, The Smiler will open alongside The Smiler bedroom, and 14 new Moon Voyage themed bedrooms in Alton Towers Hotel. The first of its kind in the world, The Smiler will be the biggest ever investment for a ride at the Resort. Whilst the world first element is still under wraps, the coaster is set to provide an experience like no other ride. It will marmalise your body and mind, combining intense physical effects from plunging drops and extreme turns with twisted psychological effects. The Smiler features five mind manipulations: The Inoculator, The Tickler, The Flasher, The Giggler and The Hypnotiser to provide a complete physical and mental assault on riders. It will turn you into a smiling advocate. Featuring plunging drops of 30m, a ride time of 165 seconds and a track length 3x the length of Oblivion, The Smiler is set to be an intense addition to the Alton Towers Resort’s line up of adrenalin pumping rides.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I think the worlds first self duelling rollercoaster is likely to be it.

Looking at the track plans you can easily see 6 or so very close moments of interaction with the train that will be going round on the opposite track. The first route is slightly shorter than the second, so the final 'crossover' will be flying over the breakrun for the second lift.

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

I really do think the '14 inversions' will be the world's first.

While it's pretty much common knowledge amongst us enthusiasts, they've never announced the number, and one of them's indoors, so they can still argue that it's 'under wraps'. And it's a pretty significant world's first!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Quite a few of us now have had a guess at self duelling - but then once again, we have the "you will need to ride it before you know"

I would say I do probably agree, the only thing that is making me think it could possibly be something else is The Game. For a start, the game reveals the 'hidden' indoor inversion, it does also miss off 3 of the outdoor ones. Now there are still some top secret items to unlock once the ride opens in May, 3 of them will clearly be the remaining inversions, but with 7 items left to unlock... What are the remaining 4?

So as I said, this leads me to believe the world's first/beating element will be something more than just the inversion count!

Re: [The Smiler] Construction Updates and Ride Speculation Part 2

Hopefully there is some sort of slow pre show section, similar to Blue Fire before its launch. I am thinking air cannons, flashing lights, that sort of thing, something to make you feel

I think the self duelling concept is a great one, and some near misses will be great (I just worry how long it will be before H&S say no more near misses due to potential objects coming loose, similar to Dueling Dragons at IOA)

I am hoping the trains don't have any back prodders or leg whippy things, but on ride audio would be a first for Alton Towers.

I am hoping it stays a mystery as well, and does not get revealed like with the 13 Drop element, been poorly shown off on TV when the ride first opened.
