UK politics general discussion

This is an incredible outburst from Charles Walker, a Conservative MP of 17 years

"I hope all those people who put Liz Truss in Number 10, it was worth it"

It feels like the government are in complete meltdown right now.

It's a shame that even here it's still about how it affects the PARTY, and his fellow MPs on £80k salaries.

Rather than majority of the country sitting at home unsure if they'll be hungry or frozen this winter. Some might even be both.

That any vote can essentially be forced through the whip to be "support us or else you get kicked out" laughs in the face of any democratic belief there is in this country. And should it be proven that the Tories were essentially manhandling their own to vote with them is an embarrassment of the highest order.

They've made a mockery over the last few years and continue to put the country in an incredibly dangerous position for many of us living here.

The old David Cameron tweet about chaos with Ed Miliband once more ages like milk.

Yet because its party over country there won't be a GE. It'll continue until the population get an opportunity to change things, and also relies on said population realising the current situation is unsustainable.

I think it's safe to say that Truss has gone beyond the point of bowing out gracefully. She should never work in politics again when she finally goes in the next week or so. She has shown she is willing to trample over people and even her own party simply in order to keep her own position. This is not a person that a party or the general public can put any trust in. She should just go away and reflect on what a pathetic person she has been over the last few weeks.

It’s just come through on BBC News as a Breaking News alert that Sir Graham Brady is meeting Liz Truss in No 10… even though a Graham Brady meeting was not previously on the timetable for today.

I think the end of Liz Truss might be nigh, folks…
EDIT: It’s being said by No 10 that Liz Truss herself requested the meeting with Graham Brady, but that the meeting was still very much unscheduled…

Chairman of Conservative Party (Jake Berry), Deputy Prime Minister (Thérèse Coffey) and Chairman of the 1922 Committee (Graham Brady) are all at number 10 now. Somethings going on...

Apparently she called the meeting with Sir Graham to “keep in touch with the mood of the party”.

I don't think it takes a genius to work out that the mood inside the Conservative party is pretty damn low at the moment.

Liz Truss is making a statement in Downing Street at 1:30pm.

I wonder what she might be announcing? No 10 have insisted that she will be in place past 31st October, so I’m not sure whether it’ll be a resignation…

The lettuce is victorious.

Another leadership election for the small number of the country who are Tory members. All of them should be embarrassed by this.

So we have another Conservative leadership election, this time running over one week. This will be MPs only, not Conservative members (probably just as well).

Third PM this year. Ever thought of asking the electorate what they want?

Steven Swinford, political editor of The Times, claims that Johnson is on his way back to the UK in order to throw his hat in the ring for a return. This is absolute mayhem.

You know it’s been a disastrous reign when Liz Truss lasted 23 days fewer as PM than Big Sam did as England manager.
