Wicker Man - General Discussion - Part Two

Alton Towers
Just now ·
An update on Monday opening: The hotels, Waterpark and Rollercoaster Restaurant are open as usual. We will be opening our theme park tomorrow as planned, from 10am until 4pm, with a revised Early Ride Time offering from 9.30am in CBeebies Land, Cloud Cuckoo Land and Hex. We’ll then aim to open the majority of the rest of our attractions as soon as we can.

After the cold weekend, it may take some of our bigger rides a little longer than normal to get up and running. We will do everything we can to open our coasters to guests as soon as it’s safe to do so, so please bear with us.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Wicker Man will be open tomorrow but we’ll keep you updated on when you’ll be able to experience our new thrill ride.

Thanks to everyone who’s braved the cold to visit us this weekend. And do keep an eye on our social media channels for any further updates.

Max 10 min 5°C is not even close to weather conditions that would prevent any ride from opening. Baffling really - can only assume that it's a cost cutting measure to save a few quid on staff over a few days under false pretences.

Isn’t everything in CCL SBNO / “TLC”?

Yeah, the website is outdated. It does seem like they are potentially saving wicker man for later in the week if not Saturday which seems ridiculous when people could be riding it as soon as tomorrow. It's a real kick in the face to those who visit and can't ride an attraction that can fully operate.

Guys, don't worry! I'm sure Alton are just being mega risk-averse tomorrow and it will soft open on Tuesday.
EDIT: I think they're just being risk averse, as Thirteen and the Monorail are also apparently closed tomorrow.

Looks like it could take until 12/1pm for the other coasters to open too tomorrow. And that's being optimistic.

Think I'm guna cancel my BnB and just go Tuesday now for the day. Forecast says it should be 7 degrees by Tuesday which is the same as next weekend so fingers crossed for a soft opening.

What a start for them eh? You have to feel for them a bit. This will be hitting them in the pocket which is the last thing they need.

Ok. When I called Alton I was told that if there is any snow or ice on the tracks it will not open. I expect tomorrow with the hard frost tonight there will be still be ice and snow on the tracks. Also with wicker man, unlike other coasters, there are walk ways along most of the ride which will be unavailable in the event of an emergency if covered in ice.

The hotel booking line who in turn contacted towers on my behalf said that they were told the ride will open as soon as they can open it, but cannot confirm it will open in the week until the weather conditions improve.

I would be very surprised if it's not open on Tuesday.

During my discussion with Towers on FB:

"Unfortunately Wicker Man is covered in a good few cm of snow and ice, the ride itself has many man hours of checks in a morning before the ride opens, including our expert team walking the whole track for inspections. Clearly we want to open the ride as soon as it is safe to do so. Keep checking back and we'll know more tomorrow.".

Not easy having a conversation with them when people kept telling us helpful things like 'it's snowing', 'they don't control the weather' and 'it's for your own safety'. However, that's an answer that's managed to satisfy me. I thought I recognised your DP :)

If I'm in the mood and the temperatures over 2 degrees, I'll head up tomorrow lunchtime. No use arguing as we can't change anything - and I had a half-decent few hours there today, whilst a £40 annual pass has softened the blow very nicely :)

Yeah, I'm pretty satisfied with that answer. That's fair enough. I didn't see anyone else showing any willingness to ask the questions so bluntly so quickly, so I thought I may as well. Thanks Will for making your support of some of my points known. Appreciate it! I have no idea how many people recognize my profile on here and FB, I thought about 50%. I don't mind having a moan on any of the formats though. I think I've been reasonably respectful to people tonight, except for some randoms. Especially the guy with the beard.

Edit - I've got some posting and stuff to do tomorrow. Will review things online at about 11am and if there are any positive signs, I might have a gentle ride to North Staffs :)
