What I meant was why bother opening? Surely they should just charge £25 today as nowt much available as a good will gesture to those who still want to visit

How many people will have paid full price though? I'm betting a very small number.

Today is usually full of MAP holders as it's tradition on first day of season. The vast majority of non pass holders I would imagine have booked online or used 241's.

What's the percentage of people who actually pay on the gate price these days? It can't be that high. You literally have to be the biggest idiot going to pay that.

Tickets for today are valid for both today and any date before June 30th.

Crowds were presumably heavier than expected with the extended ride close.

Anyone who does pay gate price should just be automatically upgraded to the parks season pass, makes proper business sense.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see that next year, on the gate adult tickets become season passes.

The top temperatures I'm getting for Monday and Tuesday are 4 and 8 degrees, I think the coasters will be off tomorrow but they should be open on Monday as it stands I would have thought.

Who knows! The temperatures were more than adequate today, and indeed were higher than previous February half-term event days where the likes of Nemesis and Air operated - and yet the park had no intention of even attempting to open anything at all. On that basis 4 degrees probably does threaten WM.

To be honest, I find it hard to trust weather forecasts even 24 hours in advance, so I guess we won't really know what will or won't open until each morning, its probably a case of taking each day as it comes!

I've only ever visited the park on opening day once and said never again, too many start of the season teething problems.

Obviously the weather can't be helped and even our local airports had flights cancelled due to the forecast which did look worse than it actually was.

Like many said, the coasters have run in colder weather in the past, but I presume that due to the Smiler incident, they have imposed new running restrictions on the rides including temperatures and wind factors etc...

As for the reliability of the weather forecast, I'm sure that Johns Weather Forecasting Stone has got to be the most reliable method

This is just my opinion, but I think the fact that the coasters have previously run in cold conditions (and they definitely have because I’ve been there when Air was operating in around freezing temperatures) begs an interesting question now that we’re being told it’s not safe to operate them.

Was it not safe to operate them in these similar conditions back a few years ago or is it safe and they’re now just more cautious?

This is a park that says it wants to get to 365 day operation......

If yesterday is anything to go by that that is pure fantasy.

Most parks would have opened more rides, the staff were not available as they'd been told to take the weekend off.

It’s a little more complicated than that, rides are calibrated to the operating temperature they are expected to run in (types of oil used, wheel compounds etc). If weather is unexpected you can’t quickly change these features.

There is also the risk of a ride shut down leaving people stuck for 40 minutes on a break run in cold weather. I suspect they where not keen on the visual of a bunch of riders on wickerman wrapped in those tin foil blankets being evac’d off their new ride.

Towers are damned by media scrutiny supported by hysterical tweeters, something that was not a factor 5 years ago.

The cold temperatures were forecast more than a week in advance. The park announced the closures just 18 hours before opening.
