Thorpe Park: General Discussion

Will they actually check that people have the app though?
It’s possible but I doubt it.

There were reports of pubs and restaurants refusing entry unless you could show the app and check-in - but it isn’t a legal requirement as you can supply details other way.

The bigger problem with the app is you can’t checkout, you are leaving up to the team to decide if you were at risk or not and whether they contact you.

I had to download the app to get into the Fried Chicken place at Towers, probably be doing similar at Thorpe.

Regarding the restrictions on the mazes, masks should be the least of their worries. At £10 a pop they'll be lucky to have any guests in them :p

Despite my constant Thorpe bashing (it's only because I care...) I'll actually be visiting on Friday on freebie Sun Savers tickets. Not been in a long time now and actually quite looking forward to it.

I've heard that Thorpe have said that no exemptions are allowed regarding masks in the mazes. If that's true then Thorpe are breaking the law by refusing access to those with genuine mask exemptions. I know all public places reserve the right to bar anyone for any reason but I'm not sure if that covers individual activities within the premesise.

Just got to hope Towers don't follow suit (I emailed them this morning to double check).

"Hello" this is a highly infectious virus we are talking about, the virus will not know or respect the difference between those that can and can't wear a mask.

Masks are not nice to wear, but the more you wear one, the more you will forget that you got one on. Wearing a mask is not only there to protect you, but also others. Scare Mazes are in confined spaces where the risk of virus transmission is at its greatest.

Forgive me for being ignorant but would the maze not make you less aware of the mask? Obviously you’ll be distracted so it might not be as bad as just walking down the street with it on?
You do have a point there actually.

I know it's been said, but breaking the law? Haha. No.

The entitlement of people to think they are allowed access to places on their own terms regardless rules put in place for the benefit of all is pretty depressing.

As others have said, I don’t think it is unreasonable to ask for face coverings to be mandatory in a closed environment such as a scaremaze where screaming and shouting will be a natural reflex.

I despise wearing a face covering. As someone who relies heavily on lip reading it makes communication incredibly challenging and stressful. They are also far from the most comfortable things (though there are certainly some which are more comfortable than others if you’re prepared to take the time and test the options). However, I completely accept that they are a necessary evil, and go along with it when required to do so. I feel guilty and uncomfortable when someone feels the need to remove their covering to communicate with me. I don’t want someone else to feel the need to compromise their safety and wellbeing to accommodate me.

I have scaled back some of my personal activities as a result of the restrictions to avoid putting myself in too many difficult situations, which is not ideal, but again a necessity at the moment.

Let me be clear, I am all for accessibility (a big part of my job is creating accessible experiences for people, and I also say all of the above as someone with a disability), but I do think we need to weigh everything up at the moment to truly appreciate the risk to the participant and those around them. Everyone should have the right to work in a safe environment I believe.

Above all else, let’s make sure we have some perspective on this; we are talking about a scaremaze. An optional, upcharge, leisure facility. We’re not talking about freely walking the streets or visiting a supermarket.

I find the subject of exemptions problematic as anyone, I repeat, anyone can visit Gov UK and print an exemption card. No questions asked. What is intended as a vital tool for certain groups has been made too easily abused. It’s made it much more difficult for frontline workers to challenge, and I can completely understand that many feel uncomfortable challenging people (this is simply not something they would normally have to do in their position).

So yes, while it does initially seem like a tough policy, I personally can’t blame them for putting it in place.

The app is an odd one. Especially given the compatibility issues many have reported I’d be surprised if they are going to outright turn people away without it... I was under the impression that an alternative means needs to offered. Perhaps they are simply trying to reduce the number of edge cases but will still have an alternative in place for those genuinely cannot use the official app?..

I don't think its unreasonable for the no mask no entry rule either. It's unfortunate for those who genuinely cannot wear one for whatever reason, but in these mazes I can understand perfectly why this is the case. Think how many people the actors are still going to be exposed to (no matter the distance or whatever) in those mazes. I don't really know how long of a session the actors do at Thorpe before a change over, can only assume it may be less than usual?

The bigger problem with the app is you can’t checkout, you are leaving up to the team to decide if you were at risk or not and whether they contact you.

The app only notifies you that you have been exposed to the virus, it provides no data to the full track and trace scheme.
Due to the way Apple/Google built the underlying tech privacy is a key part of the system and it doesn’t alert anyone but the phone user.

Seems they will be accepting mask excemptions.

A Facebook messenger conversation with THORPE PARK

Me: Hi there! Can you confirm if the rumors there will be no mask excemptions permitted for mazes are true or not?
Me: (there's a rumor going around saying people excempt under the rules for rides won't be for mazes)

THORPE: Hi Gregory, if you are exempt from wearing a mask, you will not have to wear one when going through our outdoor mazes. - Nicola

Me: I assume it's just grab an excemption card from island access like for rides?

Well you can’t get anymore clearer than that... although all the mazes and scare zones state you must wear a mask and rap also have to use the main queues.
