Don't you see the irony here? For years the park has neglected the general upkeep of parts of the park that greatly enhance the guest experience that could have been sorted with a £10 b&q gift voucher spent on a tin of paint, a duster, a sponge, a screwdriver and a hammer - Yet they are then willing to spend a few hundred quid constructing a big fence to make it slightly harder for a 15 year old rude boy in a baseball cap spit on someone once in a blue moon?

What did actually happen to those? I remember them only lasting a very short period when HH was new. Not enough sunlight down there perhaps?

It's a slightly different issue here, isn't it. There aren't a million opportunities for a little scrote to spit at a person from a height, who is in an object travelling at a sedate speed, without a roof that they are unable to stop and catch up with said scrote.

It's just a fence ®

Maybe not a million, but there's A LOT of opportunities to spit at people from a height if you look around enough. The Katanga Canyon bridge and The Rapids exit bridge are the 2 big ones, but there are plenty of others around the park ;)
 
Not too bad compared to the other new fences. At least it's themed. Is it higher than the old fence? If not then it may actually be an improvement.
 
I was there yesterday - the Oblivion exit path fence is higher than before - the black mesh that you see on top is all extra to what was there before, although honestly it looks fine and I had always though that fence in particular was low before considering the track is right on the other side.

Urgh!!! :mad: That was my 2nd favourite place to get spat on after the rapids tunnel! Honestly Towers, do you have no heart? Is there not a single place in your park where you can leave us all to enjoy the simple pleasures of being spat on??? :(

To make matters worse, my neighbours have just replaced the boundary fence in our garden, which means I can't even spit on them anymore. I guess the exit bridge above the rapids lift hill will be a busy place this year.....

We really must stop naming all the places in Alton Towers that haven't yet got a fence. Odds on there being a fence in this location in the next 2 weeks?
 
I am the only one is finding the fence drama oddly hilarious with the reaction on here? I mean, with all the bad stuff that has happened with Towers in recent years with it either being either staff cuts, ride closures, poorly planned rides, falling standards etc that the one thing that ultimately made all of us to really blew a gasket was a set of fences...

I'm sorry but...the fences are the least of our concerns with Towers. And TBH, Blivy's fence doesn't look to bad if I'm going to be unpopular on here.
 
It's because it's not just fencing, it's spending money they don't need to spend on things they don't need to spend it on and contribute nothing to the park financially, aesthetically or in terms of safety. Or maybe those Oblivion catwalk railings have more blood on their hands than we realise.

They're literally paying someone to walk around the park, find places to put new fences, and hiring people to design, manufacture and install them.

When they're so strapped they're having to phase repairing the crumbling Nemesis station over two or three years, it does seem really strange.

If an insurance company has decided that these changes will make an accident at the park less likely, then the fences will have contributed to the finances of the park through lower premiums (or by avoiding increased premiums). This is presumably what has happened.

And how do you explain the need for fencing off the lake bridge, and applying further fences in completely unnecessary places, like the gardens?

The bridge is one of the resort's many attractions and as such requires a perimeter fence

And that's the key point here, Merlin are the ones who own the risk associated with people being near this machinery. In terms of them "spending money they don't need to spend", look at this in terms of a decision that to help ensure that the possibility of litigation is reduced/removed, that's actually a potential cost saving.
