And face coverings look set to be mandatory in shops from Friday 24th July. I'd say I'm surprised they've taken so long to do this, but I'm really not. Good job I've finally got around to ordering a couple of things from the 'Hidden Disabilities' scheme which should make it a whole lot easier to explain why I'm exempt.

1. Where's that date coming from?
2. I repeat, nope.

Will that make things tricky at work, if you have to challenge someone about not wearing a mask when not wearing one yourself?

They have in effect said that haven't they?
Bit of a developing message to be honest...

Yesterday
Minister for the Cabinet Office says it is "basic good manners, courtesy and consideration to wear a mask", but that legislation or indeed further direction was not required.

This Morning

Prime Minister says people "should wear face coverings in shops".

This Evening

It's briefed that people will have to wear face coverings in shops from July 24 or face a £100 fine.

Great. Fun times ahead for me. I've been working my mum up to this for several weeks now, we have a variety of masks and it's just not looking like it'd going to happen. However, she has to wear one now, so it's either that or she doesn't go out.

My approach to the face mask wearing has been if I know it's going to be heaving (lookin' at you Primark) and I won't be able to socially diastance (again Primark), I have willingly worn a face mask. I wouldn't have gone in without it.

Mostly I haven't, I imagine like a lot of people. I was using my common sense and if places were quiet or I was outside and I could keep 2m away I didn't wear one. I think just looking at other people, it has been only very recently that people are actually wearing masks, round where I have been anyway. Hardly saw a mask in Wales.

I wore one all throughout Liverpool the other week because there was no point taking it off and on, and the same with the Trafford Centre. I was fine doing this.

I wore one the other day when I was out in a centre, and intend wearing one when I go to Blackpool this week.

My issue here is, in shops you do see a lot of staff members not wearing them. I understand not everyone can, but an entire floor of staff stacking shelves can't all have medical grounds for not wearing them.

If I have to wear one at 11.30pm when there is me and mainly staff members on the shop floor, they surely have to wear one as well?

I also find it confusing what masks you are supposed to wear. Most of the shops are selling cheap and are not a very nice polyester material and it's hot and not very pleasant wearing them. If 100% cotton is what you're meant to wear, why aren't places selling those ones? As in Asda or Boots or Superdrug?

Overall, it is a good thing we now have a definitive answer to the mask wearing saga. Sometimes I've felt the odd one out for not wearing a mask, but mostly I've felt the odd one out for wearing one.

EDIT: Just bought five cotton masks for £12 so we'll see how they go.

We're very late to the party with face coverings in shops, other European countries have mandated in since April! Seems to make perfect sense to me, for most people it is no real hassle yet it can help reduce transmission.

It will be interesting to see if those working in shops have to wear them also, as most do not seem to have been doing so thus far.

Based on the public transport rules they probably won't be required to do so.

The stupidity is that it's 4 months too late as majority of people seem to think the pandemic is over anyway so won't wear a mask.

Especially as we have a grace period where people will not bother then on the day kick off about being "forced" to wear one.

The indecision from the government and constant mixed messages is embarrassing.

It’s definitely a month or two too late, but three months ago the advice was stay at home, so non-essential shops weren’t even open. Also they wanted to make sure that the public wasn’t buying masks that were needed for health professionals, now cotton masks or surgical disposable masks are widely available.

Well i wonder how many will not bother buying a mask till it is too late
