Thorpe Park: General Discussion

DLP has a full on search these days including bag scanner. So the idea that a busy park can't possibly make everyone do a security search is nonsense.

It's not a perfect system, but that's because one doesn't exist. People who want to smuggle things in ALWAYS find a way to do it.

Of course, any level of search is physically possible, but the space and cost of resources required is massive and disproportionate. The incredible costs of your first point can't be justified because of the truth of your second point.

Metal detectors are useless - "security theatre". All my kitchen knives are ceramic, none will set off a metal detector, but all are very sharp & some rather long/large.

Yup, which is why I suggested it as a way you’ll reduce the possibility over full body part downs - not prevent it all together.

One major thing to remember out of all this is that it’s likely that this is a targeted attack, and not someone who’s just got randomly angry at someone. Theme parks are still safe, even Thorpe despite having incidents with groups of people with rivalries. As others have mentioned it’s all about things being proportionate. We’ve seen lots of incidents of violence in shopping centres in recent years, more so than theme parks but that hasn’t resulted in a full airport style security check before you wander into Primark.

It's a shame that this has happened as it's shown that over the past year, knife crime has risen by about 10% i believe. I can imagine when Thorpe open again, security will be very tight indeed!

If it happened on the bridge at the end of the day there wouldn’t be anyone at the park entrance from the security team so the 2 men could have easily went back to the car to pick up a knife. With carjacking on the up you be surprised how many people have got weapons in there cars. No one uses fists any
More in a fight.

I've never seen such lip service paid to security searches than I have at Blackpool.

Bags get fingered through for picnic contraband, metal detectors are used but ignored when they bleep. Who's that keeping safe?

Well it’s changed a lot in the last 10 years as when I went last I had to put everything in my pockets onto a tray and walk thou and it went off again as I had metal on my jeans so they ran the hand held over my jeans and they were happy so get my things and enjoyed my day in the park.

Blackpool

Blackpool doesn’t really have anything enhanced, the metal detectors they use are pretty dumb machines and they pretty much always wave you through when it alarms. They are more bothered about ensuring you don’t take a picnic into the park.

Security searches have their place but if you want to get a knife into a theme park you can pretty easily even with metal detectors and bag searches. If you are doing that it suggests you are going in with intent and have a victim in mind.

Theme park security even at Disney is aimed at preventing terrorists (or in America mass shooters), who are wanting to cause mass carnage, not a solo person with a switchblade knife. And that’s as it should be, there is risk in all walks of life, unless you are going to strip search every person who enters a public space like a park, shop or bar you won’t completely prevent this risk.

At the end of the day it all comes down to risk management.
There are some places where bag check etc happen to paying guest.
However staff /volunteers of 'trusted companies' just have to look like the photo on their ID card.

You must look well dodgy to get that much attention. :tearsofjoy:

Thing is though, with all that messing about, could they have known if one of your cards in you wallet was a concealed blade? That your phone was a disguised taser? That you had a blade under the section of jeans they were happy with because it also had studs on top? That you had a load of class A for dealing in a kinder egg up your arse? No, they couldn't.

Which is why a level of randomness to meaningful searches is the preference, and the costs (and intrusion) involved in real meaningful searches really are not worth it.

What kind of lowlife takes a knife to a theme park?

Trying to apportion some of the blame onto the park is just silly though. Security checks are always more of a deterrent than anything, you'll never stop everything. Even then, anything could be adapted into a weapon once you're through (think glass bottles etc). If people are that way inclined they'll find a way.

This is the kind of thing that can play out at any venue. I see no need to single out Thorpe Park.

I remember going to Parc Asterix during the Euro's and not too long after the attack on the bataclan. Security was intense and there was a clear box in the floor. It was filled to the brim of all sorts and sizes of knives, that image has always stayed with me. As was the confusion of who takes a knife to theme park.

People mention that someone determined to stab someone will probably get a knife in. There's also the fact that theres plenty of materials and items inside the park that can be turned into a gouging item if determined. It's an incident that if it happened in a shop people wouldn't demand metal detectors, so not sure why the park has to be any different.

Just hire this guy for "enhanced" security.
