You are exactly right, there’s only been a high volume of attacks lately due to less stringent security measures due to covid and social distancing.

We can’t let things continue like this, stabbings are becoming far too frequent in this country in the last few weeks. We can’t let our security levels drop because of coronavirus.
 
It's not practical to properly search every individual's bag and entire person on entry to busy theme parks. If people are determined to get knives in then in reality it's unlikely you will be able to stop them. With Covid measures in place this makes it potentially even harder. You can only really blame this on the scum who decide to carry knives, especially into places where families are going to have fun and get away from the stresses of every day life. I place no blame on security staff for this incident.
 
This is a terrible incident, I hope all those injured and had to witness this are safe. That being said, security have a difficult job and as other's have said, the oxygen thieves that sneak in this stuff have methods unfortunately. I will say though, they could do a pat down just in case you have a moron with a knife in their pocket. They do that at gigs all the time as well as scanners. It's a difficult situation and especially evil that it'd happen in a place for escapism.

As much as I hate patdowns I agree, they are an effective method for weeding out the I'llprepared attackers.

It would help with the type to carry knifes with them "just in case".
 
This thread is just comedy.

You absolutely can not and will not stop people carrying weapons into themeparks, or anywhere else for that matter, if they really want to. The end.

Someone getting stabbed is no ones fault other than the person carrying the knife. Blaming the park is a dumb deflection.

Sticking your efforts primarily onto a metal detector, which won't work because it beeps at belt buckles and clothing studs and knives aren't always metal, is pointless and people would know it.

A level of randomness to what extent and how you may be searched is the best deterrent to most people as they don't know how to conceal what they want to conceal. This is the approach Thorpe make. It's a good approach. I'm sure they'll review their security to see if they can learn something, but they know what they are doing and whatever any of you might personally see as a failing in their usual security measures is likely your own lack of understanding and not their wrongdoing.

Shutting for an extended period? Why on earth is that even a thought? If the police have a scene on until morning that restricts access then that might delay opening tomorrow if they physically can't open, but rain is forecast tonight so that'll be unlikely and they'd get forensics done and scene stood down tonight. It's nasty that someone got stabbed, but they aren't going to be closing as some sort of odd memorial.
 
These new scanners that Disney are using could be a worthwhile investment.

Walt Disney World is testing a new contactless security check system at Disney Springs.
Guests at Disney Springs were greeted by a new contactless body scanner on June 13, Attractions Magazine reports.

The scanner distinguishes between weapons and personal items
The new scanners are provided by Evolv Technology. Guests simply walk through it, and security officers can see if a guest has a weapon on them.

The scanners are able to distinguish between weapons and personal items, such as a phone. Security guards are able to see where the threat is in real-time, and exactly where it is on the person’s body or bag.


3,600 guests scanned an hour
The Evolv Express scanner can screen over 3,600 an hour. Guests are able to walk through in groups or individually. When using these scanners, guests do not have to take items out of their pockets to pass through a metal detector or wait for a security guard to check their bag. This scanner could therefore significantly reduce wait times at Disney’s entry points.

Scanners can also check skin temperature

This scanner can also check the guests’ skin temperature as they pass through in just 2-3 seconds. This would provide a simpler option for checking guests’ temperature as the Disney parks begin to reopen with increased safety procedures.

This contactless scanner would also reduce the possibility of passing a virus between guests and staff members.

There is no confirmation yet that these scanners will be introduced at the rest of Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort.

Disney Springs reopened on May 20, while the theme parks at Walt Disney World will start to reopen on July 11.

Disney is also exploring how developments in other attractions technology such as IoT and wearable tech will transform the theme park experience.

I believe following the testing at Disney Springs these have been rolled out to Animal Kingdom and replace the previous manual bag checks.

True. It not a matter of stopping all. It more of a deterrent for casual carriers.

I wonder how many are using changes due to covid as a catalyst for criminality.
Face covering is normal at the moment, great for hiding your identity.

Not something I've seen in any significant numbers to be honest. I don't think for a second anyone would be approaching Thorpe thinking 'oh, I can take my knife today because there might be less security'. I can't see any likely link between covid and today's incident.
 
They should check everyone and everything metal put in a tray and everyone walks thought the metal detector and if something is picked up security use the hand held detectors for a closer inspection. I not been to BPB for 10 years but everyone had to walk thought a metal detector then. Watching vlogs in the uk and Europe it’s all been about the social distancing, Washing your hands and temperature checks but nothing about security checks.
Do Security staff carry protection with them if they or another member of the public get threaten by a weapon?

Metal detectors are useless - "security theatre". All my kitchen knives are ceramic, none will set off a metal detector, but all are very sharp & some rather long/large.

Do you really expect someone who thinks carrying a knife is a good idea to know the difference between security and security theatre?

I think the park will be closed for the next couple of weeks while a police investigation is held and security measures are reviewed.

What is your expected level of a security check and is it the same for a public park, bar, restaurant, model village or zoo?

And what time do you want to arrive on park for a 10:00 opening? Around 06:00 should do it.

Yes. Someone who routinely caries a knife will know the difference between metal and ceramic and ways of concealing a weapon.

Yes, very much so. The kind of people looking to commit crimes of this sort will likely know the ins and outs of security features, and how to circumvent them / when they can be ignored.

Thorpe has attracted groups of teenagers from first opening.
Groups dont always get on, never, ever have.
There have been many thousands of "minor" incidents there, seen them happen myself, they dealt with it well at the time.
Knife crime is not a recent phenomena, right back to Peaky Blinders, young idiots use weapons.
Monks Walk footpath right up to the park boundary, means you can smuggle anything into Thorpe, with very little effort.
Gang fights happen where young people meet up.
The only thing that amazes me is that people are suprised that this has happened.
Amazed that it has taken this long to happen, in all honesty.
