Thorpe Park: General Discussion

So, what are our final predictions the day before we find out what's in store?

My final prediction is:

  • B&M Hyper Coaster
  • UK's tallest coaster (unsure on exact height, but my personal prediction is that it will break Big One's park-billed height of 235ft as well as RCDB's figure of 213ft)
  • Opening in 2024

I know I've mentioned the state of Colossus and Inferno on here before. But the last few days I've been seeing pictures of Magic Mountain repainting Tatsu, which opened in 2006. Xcelerator at Knott's Berry Farm is also getting repainted, which opened in 2002. To be fair, I'm not saying that Six Flags is a better operator than Merlin. If anything, I'd put Six Flags and Parques Reunidos at the bottom of the major operators. But if Six Flags and Cedar Fair can repaint their rides, hopefully Merlin can do too. I know they have done the TLC at Alton Towers, but doesn't Thorpe Park need it too?*

*I haven't been to Thorpe Park for a few years, but things were looking really tired last time I visited. Aside from a new fire effect on Tidal Wave, I'm assuming that most things look more tired now than they did when I last visited.

I’d love if they pushed for the 300ft mark. It would be a very marketable round number and It isn’t impossible in regards to planning either. I’m expecting 250ft though

With Rita they measured the speed in kilometres per hour rather than miles per hour to make it seem faster. All the adverts just said 0-100 and didn't give the units. Couldn't Thorpe Park do something similar with this new roller coaster? If they give the height in millimetres, it’ll sound really tall.

You never know... 300ft isn't off the table by any stretch!

My personal prediction, like you, is around the 250ft mark, but I reckon they could pull a giga on us... whatever it ends up being, though, I've got a really good feeling that it'll be something special!

My hopes would be a B&M hyper coaster.

You never know, it could end up being a record breaking dive coaster. Only needs 5 foot more than Yukon Striker and would also be a UK record breaker.

Fingers crossed for a hyper though!

Surely Heathrow Airport may have something to say past a certain height. I'm not convinced on them going for the tallest coaster, but fair play if they somehow manage it.

I don't see any issues with them taking the UK height record. The Big One is 213ft tall, so that is what they need to beat (not sure why BPB advertise it as taller than this, but I trust RCDB over BPB).

Stealth is 205ft tall, so you only need an extra 14ft to get the record. Or an extra 31ft to beat BPB's own stats. In the grand scheme of things, that's not too much extra height. I can't see how that would have any impact on Heathrow, even in worst case scenario situations.

Thorpe is apparently outside of Heathrow’s inner surface, so they can go right up to 500ft if they want to. (In theory, of course…)

Was planning permission for Stealth plain sailing?

Anything 200 feet plus is prime for planning scrutiny from residents and potential trimming down surely.

From what I can tell, Stealth got through fairly easily, but the locals were not told about it prior to the planning permission being granted, which did generate some uproar.

It’s also worth remembering that Stealth was submitted towards the end of the 2004 season for a 2006 opening; if this is 2024 as rumoured, they’ve gotten themselves a significant head start compared to Stealth, and compared to any other coaster they’ve ever built.

My personal logic is that the height of the ride may be why the park have gone for a full consultation. If you get the locals on side early, then it’s probably more likely that your big ride won’t encounter too many issues in planning. Also, why would they spend all that extra money on a full consultation if they were building a regularly-sized coaster, which would surely get through with a regular planning application?

A few hours before the potential reveal of some info, my personal prediction remains a hyper coaster that breaks the UK height record. As for exactly how tall; I think it will top both BPB’s claim of 235ft and RCDB’s claim of 213ft. My guess would be around 250ft, but I also don’t think a giga coaster is out of the question.

Thorpe needs a ride that will make a real statement and sell itself effortlessly, and a coaster that broke the UK height record by ~100ft would certainly do that! I also think a ride of 250ft or so would do that, and be absolutely amazing, but could you imagine a giga coaster at Thorpe? That wouldn’t just take the UK height record, that would blow it to pieces!

Is anyone going to attend this Public consultation thingy tomorrow?
I’d imagine that today’s consultation will have at least one theme park enthusiast there. As much as they are supposedly asking for proof of address, I find it hard to believe that there wouldn’t be at least one theme park fan living within the given radius.

As long as they respect the process and give locals a full and proper chance to air their concerns before asking any questions (which I’m sure they will), then I don’t personally see an issue with enthusiasts attending.

The public consultation is later today. Would assume a few of the clickbait vloggers will be there disguised as grandchildren of local residents.

Ah i thought it was Friday 10th? Even better then as we should find out later what the rough plan is.

Definitely going to be a Hyper though.

A B&M Hyper seems to me like the most likely option, but that could just be because it's the general consensus in forums at the moment. Personally I'm hoping for a GCI or RMC Hybrid. I know an RMC seems impossible but I think that's due to the overhype and excessive push for one of these coaster models in the UK. It's hard to imagine one actually being built right? But in reality we've seen no less evidence for a monster RMC that breaks the hybrid height limit than we have a B&M hyper. Again, I don't think that's what we will see, just some food for thought.
