Let's all have a big collective moan

Why has the 'I feel down' topic had 42008 more views than the 'I feel happy' topic?

It's always baffled me but people are usually more drawn to a bad news story, than they are a good one. SPREAD THE JOY PEOPLE.

Because every time I feel like crap, I come in here, read what others are saying, and instantly feel better about my own life. I assume I'm not the only one?

That makes sense and seems right

Or people care, so they go and have a look to see if they can give advice or a shoulder to cry on.

Exactly my point, you feel better by reading about how down others are. Surely reading the 'I feel happy' topic, would make you feel happy? Instead of using the misfortune of others to boost your own happiness, no?

It's not so much a schadenfreude thing, more a reminder that my life could be a lot worse.

Reading either topic could make you better. Reading the I feel down topic makes you feel a bit better because you could be worse off (As Diogo said). And reading the I feel happy topic makes you feel better because you're friends are happy.

Yeah, I get that. It's just people clearly don't read both equally, more views are drawn to the negative topic.

I'm not having a go at people for it, I'm just 'moaning' (as per the topic title in here), that people in general (myself included, I'm not singling anyone out) are usually drawn to negativity. It's irritating why can't we all just be drawn to happiness?

People appear to have missed the point of my initial post. It was never a 'you all need to get a grip', more of a 'why are humans in general seemingly drawn towards negativity'. It's just something that I've noticed & I used the 'I feel down topic' as a stat that we could all relate to, to back up my post. It was my moan that the world needs to be happier.

The world is negative because of consumerism. It is built to make you feel inadequate, needy, incomplete, lacking, fat, ugly, envious, jealous etc etc.

When did you last see an advert for wrinkle cream that said "You are beautiful in your skin, you don't need this product, but buy it anyway"?

When you are happy you are less inclined to desire things, because by definition you are happy. Ironically when you are happy you are probably more likely to attain what you desire, because you perform better as you have good motivation. Indifference, or over stress creates different negative symptoms:

The brain is also only capable of taking on board so much of the information that surrounds us, and generally tends to focus around the areas relative to our present mindset. A simple example of this in action is when you own a car, you suddenly notice lots more of them on the road. I have found the same to apply in many areas of life.

So when you have a highly capitalist driven society based on having more, to feed the system, you need people to buy - those people need a reason to buy, and emotions sell products so yours are played upon frequently. That takes its toll and feeds into every area of life, and I see every day the results of a "throw away society" that has been created, for which value is diminished.

People are not taught to look for happiness within themselves, but essentially to "buy it". If you don't have money, then how can you be happy?

No surprise then, that so many find themselves drawn to the negative topic, it is habitual.

Of course, there is the other aspect of making sure your friends are OK, and also gaining some perspective on your own life.

TheMan is spot on. When I was studying Graphic Design we were taught what is known as 'commodity fetishism'. For products or services that weren't needed or sought after, we were taught to invent needs by planting insecurities in the minds of the potential buyer.

If someone doesn't want to buy your new line of shoes, you have to plant the idea that the shoes are supreme items of great importance, that the shoes will enhance your reality, and that by not possessing them, you are a failure. It has you seeking for some vague sense of fulfilment through ownership, which is not driven with your well-being in mind, only your money. Capitalism reduces everything to the material, including your aspirations and sense of self worth - but to keep you profitable they can't ever let you be satisfied, you have to always need something, you must always be unhappy. In that way, modern consumerism is poisonous and corrosive for your mind.

It is that kind of disgusting subconscious manipulation that has driven me right away from the commercial arm of design.

Ingrowing toenails. GO AWAY, no one likes you. :L ( I currently have one and it hurts like hell.)

Today at work was the busiest day of the year so far. Tens of thousands of people buying sale items online ensured the servers would strain, and as a result we had a record number of people ringing up demanding to know why the website was so slow. Turns out lots of people have a one-track mind and don't seem to understand they aren't the only people who want to purchase items.

In a rather surreal moment in my career in customer services, for once the fault didn't exactly lie with us. We didn't have a broken system, it was just straining under the sheer volume of users at once, just like any website would in the same situation.

What WAS bad on our side, however, was the stupid amount of work a few of us (namely, me and one other girl) had to do because others in the office are bone idle. I had no breaks in between calls (aside from my scheduled breaks obviously, although anyone who has worked in a customer service call centre can attest to how important little breathers can be every now and then, especially if you're dealing with idiots), and combined with the lack of sleep I had last night I am now a zombie. My workload would have been much lighter had others done their job and jumped on the phone. But they'd rather chat, or put on lipstick, or watch tv from their desk.

In the last hour, there were only three people taking calls - myself, and two othe girls. Now, out of us three, I'm the only one who isn't on switchboard, and therefore take general enquiries. So again, at what is normally the quietest part of the day, I was frantically answering the more mentally exhausing calls while the others had a simple time. The other people in the office - three guys - could have jumped in and helped me at any time. They didn't.

I can't wait until Monday, for this stupid event to stop. Everything needs to get back to normal!

Had ingrown toe nails on both of my big toes due to poor footwear and also cutting them too short. I had the problem for 6 years and doctors just kept saying take antibiotics to stop the infection (as at there worst times, they would weep and I would be in pain) and they would tell me to splint the nail at the sides each time - which didn't solve the problem. I even suggested that I went to have the nails trimmed away at the sides, yet the didn't seem it was necessary. Got deflated each time I went till finally, I got a new doctor and they booked me in at a local medical centre.

Went and had nail 'surgery' to remove both sides of the nail from the sides of my toes and have never looked back since. Has worked perfectly for me 5 months down the line. Would highly recommend you doing it if they persist to be a nuisance to you.
