Submission to be removed

The only thing that frustrates me is that it LOOKED really good. Aesthetically, it was perfect for X-Sector when it was installed, and probably just as much today.

Regrettably, it was a dire ride, and it's rare I hear anyone disagree (I'd go as far as to say Energizer was far better!). I know I shouldn't be celebrating the loss of any ride, but hearing Submission's fate is to rust in pieces made me smile; I won't miss it.

HOPEFULLY something will fill the hole (I've just been running through Thorpe's various flats in my head trying to think if there's a cast-off that would fit the space, but drawn a blank...). One thing's sure though - so long as it's not a picnic area or pay-per-play attraction, it'll be better than Submision.

Actually I'm gonna go against the grain here, I liked Submission and I'm a tad sad that it's leaving. I admit he restraints were a tad uncomfortable but in terms of 'thrill' Submission was Alton Towers' best thrill ride. Nemesis Sub Terra isn't really a thrill ride it's an experience, Enterprise is just a family ride in a thrill ride area and Ripsaw is on it's last legs. Blade seems to be mooted as a thrill ride, but it's far more a family ride.

Unless I've forgotten something, Submission going leaves Alton Towers without a thrill ride and that makes me very sad!

^ I would hardly call Blade a family attraction. An eight year old wouldn't feel safe on it.

...Wow, that takes me back. I remember having this exact same argument on SW5Live around the time Submission first opened :/

I think we concluded it was a thrill ride for that exact reason; younger riders, including my 8 year old self, are still scared by it. The fact remains however - flat thrill rides, particularly those for the under 1.4m market are in VERY short supply at Towers - I've still yet to see adequate replacement for Energizer or the much-missed Dynamo, never mind Submission!

However, with X-Sector recently having had literally millions spent on it, with a few more on tidying things up for this season, I'd doubt it's particularly high on Alton's 'to do' list, alas. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Ripsaw go as well before we see any new flats. Blade's getting on a bit too, now I come to think about it... :/

No one feels safe on Blade, it's so knackered :p

Well so long Submission. You won't be missed! I'd hope that for 2015 we'll see a new flat ride here, as if either of the coasters go down the area will grind to a halt. It's going to be an interesting one though I think, as any ride which goes there is going to have to be fairly narrow, like Submission and Energiser were. Personally, I'm holding out fora park model one of these:

The next evolution to Energiser, and would fill a gap as well if Ripsaw was to leave :p

Whatever goes in, it needs to be something that's out and out crazy. It's the nature of X-Sector!

Why have they released this information now? I thought they would of given it a fair well, at the end of the season. only if it was to increase gate numbers due to the people that liked it coming back to ride it one last time.

I do wonder that due to it not being replaced this year. Has something terminal gone wrong with it and they cant get the parts, so instead of having question asked about a dead ride. they are going to remove it.

^ Hell yeah! They definitely should have done that. I can see it now, hundreds of enthusiasts carrying flame throwers and hand grenades down towers street, towards X - Sector, to give the ride its deserved fair well... :D

I suspect during winter maintenance its hit an issue and due to it being so rare now it is impossible or too expensive to get parts.

It does seem like a bit of a last minute random descsion, espeically to announce it now. Why not just leave it till the park opens? or announce it at the end of last season.

Its clearly a unpopular ride with the geeks and also the general public, it never got a queue, even on the busiest of days it was only a 5 minute wait. The ride looked good, but was uncomfortable, gave you a headache and sounded like it had 100 loose screws inside it.

I think either H&S have said no it needs something sorting, or something technical has gone wrong, and they either can't get the parts, or its far too expensive. Seems strange though, after last closed season they spent alot of money on it refurbishing it to try and get both arms working (but that failed).

I expect it will be removed before park opens, have a fence around it and left empty, however a new flat might open on the site for 2015, the park needs more flat filler rides!

It's popularity amongst younger guests probably went un-noticed within the community, but it often had a 45+ minute queue during school trip season. Many kids who wanted to go on a ride which went upside down but were too small for the 1.4m rides would love Submission.

It wasn't as unpopular as you think.

It won't be a massive loss, but I'm more bothered about the fact the plot it sits on will no doubt be left looking a mess with nothing on it for another 10 years.

That is until they realise it's a great space for yet another games stall.

Thankfully the ride sits behind a large amount of foliage so it shouldn't be too bad.

I;m with the majority, i wont miss the ride. My only concern is the parks already anemic thrill flat-ride complement is now on life-support. They need these sort of support rides in the park to help with queues and to allow guests to get a decent ride count. Also the 1.2 issue Dan mentions.

We need more flats to help with queues, yes, but the park doesn't. What they want is bigger queues so they can sell more Fastrack.

The park nowadays have no intention of adhering to the old Tussaud's policy of "keeping queue times to a minimum".

Not certain on that to be fair to them.

They cut the FT quota this year (raised the price instead) and all of Towers big rides have a 1000+pph throughput since Merlin bought it (Th13teen been near to Nemesis throughput). Other than Sub-Terra all Merlins Towers installations have been decent throughput machines and the Merlin years has seen the overall capacity of the park increase (ie... More capacity has come in than been lost to ride removals).

Towers issue with flatrides is they are hard to market and Merlin parks are controlled by marketing. Gone are the days when creatives said "this is what we are building... go and sell it" and now we have marketing saying "this is whats easy to sell... go and make it"

And that is quite frankly the wrong way round.

^ Not really. The Smiler was very hard to market, and they only used the 14 loop thing in the last month. The only time when the marketing team have chosen the ride was for TH13TEEN when they said "We want a family ride with an edge". Making it easy to market towards all audiences.

A 14 inversion rollercoaster was hard to market?

They may have chosen to leave the 14 inversions until the end to prove a gimmick isn't needed but it's not hard to market a steel coaster....

And Morwenna herself (previous marketing director) at the Th13teen event said the next installation was going to be a 1.4m thrill ride. Wardley also mentions it's marketing that pushed the record breaker thrill idea for Smiler in his Oakwood interview.

Its also worth noting that pretty much from the off they marketed it as a 'worlds first' or 'world beating'.
It also had the SW tag which is known for being all of Altons biggest roller coaster ride offering.

But I concur with the point that Marketing dictating what the park can build is a hideous way to run a theme park.

Submission, always bought an itchy tear to my eye, when I rode it. With the loss of this, I will no longer have to worry about trying to awkwardly duck my head to avoid an incoming pound coin. And also my lower regions, wont be squashed, which is nice too.

Submission's site will be fine, tbh. If in doubt, stick a giant metal fence in front of it and pretend it's not there...
