Interesting wording....a new concept.
It says to me something new, like a worlds first.
Why oh why can't we just have a solid coaster?
On another note I would love to see the fv coaster plans. Sounds immense. They obviously had the budget pre smiler otherwise it wouldn't have got that far along the line. Makes me think we may be seeing a watered down sw again

You could have appoint there, unless they had these plans running alongside fv plans as a second option.
I hope with the 2018 opening it will give towers the opportunity to create a well planned thought out ride. It may even give them the chance to build the ride without any mishaps or delays.

It's one thing knowing what you want to do and having plans for a coaster drawn up, but it's another thing preparing all of the necessary reports/studies that need to be submitted with a planning application of this scale. Of course this still assumes that they will require planning permission (although I'd imagine they will).
It would be great if they did submit something soon though, would demonstrate that they're more prepared than they have been in the past.

Do you think when they did the environmental screening for the fv plans, they may have looked into the flume site at the same time. It may not have been published at the time as they were focusing on the fv plans. If they didn't our first clues could be when another environmental screening is submitted. That is if sw8 runs into the wood where the flume used to be.
They did show on the Long term plan the whole flume site.
Towers could also be up to their old games and have put the banners up early just to appease guests that the flume is shut and not submit an application with their normal time scale.

Putting up the "new ride coming soon" banners is vital if they don't want people thinking rides are closed due to safety fears. Guests who see a ride closed, fenced of,f and (lets be honest here) falling apart will inevitably get the wrong idea and assume the worst.
... Or is that the right idea after all?
I think it's purely so guests think the rides closed to make way for a new coaster, rather than cost cutting (or as @DiogoJ42 said, safety concerns). It softens the fact that 6 rides have closed this year, as It shows that it is closing for a reason.
Also, I know towers rarely do much for enthusiasts, but I think our opinions may be a part of the early marketing for sw8. Do the GP really know what a "secret weapon" is (to your normal visitor, a new ride, to us - quite possibly the two most exciting words in the English language)? Of course, towers have said "developments", though I wouldn't rule out one reason for all of this being all the negativity on forums surrounding closures and opening times.

New concept to me and the use of ground breaking in the tag line makes me think it might not be a coaster, is there anything other than a new dark ride in the LTDP? I also think the reason they have announced it 2 years ahead of opening is to account for a massive chunk of land in the middle of the park being sectioned off however the fact they haven't started taking the flume down already is worrying, doesn't make me think they have lots of work to do

A multi-launch woodie was strongly rumoured to be the plan for FV, prior to last year's calamity. Maybe that's still the case, although Alton do need another family friendly, water thrill ride now too. The Flume was a really vital part of the park. It looks dreadful just sitting there in the dead centre. At this stage, I actually think that takes priority over a coaster, given the current dearth of family rides available.
A multi launch or a single launch woodie could still be on the cards, I can imagine the hieght restriction would be similar for the flume site.
However if they are saying its a new experience to Alton Towers a launch may be seen too similar to Rita. Could they not fill the family thrill category with a woodie in the same vein as InvadR or however the want to spell it.
I hope for the latter but we shall see.
