Has anyone ells noticed that the logo on all of the adverts have two swords crossing each other, i fort maybe this was a hint towards a dueling pirate theme, Maybe something like Ripsaw falls at universal, "worlds first dueling water coaster?" just a fort maybe, cant really see alton towers going with out a log flume style ride
I think the crossed swards are to re-enforce the pirate theme that is next the site. At this point I wouldn't read too much into the banners.
As amazing as a duelling coaster/ride would be, I can't see it happening. Land take would be too much and tree removal I could imagine make it a no go with the tree conservation towards the gloomy wood section of the flume.
However, imagine how good hunted hollow would be with a woodie roaring past and over it?

I've got a suspicion that SW8 might just be a dark ride...
I'm thinking this for various reasons:
*It won't be a big thrill coaster such as likes of The Smiler, as the park management must surely recognise that a new family attraction is needed. Also a big thrill coaster wouldn't suit the area. This pretty much rules out B&M I'm afraid.
*Its unlikely to be some form of family outdoor coaster also. Being in such close proximity to the runway mine train, any outdoor family coaster would be too similar, also Spinball has that base covered not far away.
*The area's size. It really isn't the largest site considering pretty much all the woods the flume uses is protected, this really only leaves the lake's basin area.
*The theme. Assuming mutiny bay is retaining its pirate theme, an indoor "castle" style ride would work a treat. This could also incorporate a water ride possibly, filling in the gap left by the flume.
*The area currently occupied by CATCF is likely to at some point become a family coaster much needed that side of the park, reducing the need for one in Mutiny Bay.
Obviously its all just speculation, but I just have this feeling that If towers do go down that route they could really pull it off with something unique, marketable and fun!

Looking at the site yesterday with the fennces covering the front of the Flume site for the first time in over 30 years, you realise how much of a visual impact that site had on the rest of Mutiny Bay. For the first time in 8 years of being there, MB actually felt like a Pirate Themed area as there was no break up in the theming from the Battle Galleons to Katanga Entrance, to the Skyride station.
Therefore I think a wooden coaster is inevitable. A woodie fits the theming of the site perfectly from a visual standpoint, there's enough room for it, it's a less sensitive noise area and it's really the only glaring omission of a park it's size.
I disagree with the comments that we don't need a flume though. Even in the spring and autumn, the flume was popular with families even if it was quiet. As has been said before, there is now a massive hole in the park lineup for a large age group of between Ceebebies and 1.2mtrs tall kids now that flume, hex and half of CCL is now closed.

As much as I'd LOVE to see a woodie - RMC or Other - I'm just not sure about the height restrictions. I'm not sure off the top of my head but I don't think the tree heigh is that high, I could be wrong though. I suppose making use of the valley is an option but it's a massive undertaking as we know that there are restrictions in place about felling trees.
It would be amazing to have a woodie which integrated itself with the trees, i'm just struggling as to whether Alton have it in them to make such a feat come into fruiton.

CATCF site with already having clean water available is the choice site for a new flume.
This site could work either way for a dark ride or coaster. DVH style ride with the highly themed start and coaster end would be good IF the coaster part was actually good (narrower boat may help?
