No sane park would base the ride on a remake that is universally agreed to be one of the worst films ever made, when the original is a cult classic. The Wicker Man was remade recently wasn't it?
... Though obviously, Merlin aren't "sane"...

Lol, beggars belief, do Merlin go out of their way to pick these dodgy names/themes??
I agree totally @AstroDan. But from the concept art it still seemed half arsed. They done a great job for atmosphere when it first opened with the entertainment, but Merlin being so short sighted have killed the area off big time.
I just wish they would start building with long term achievable packages opposed to short term gain ip or half arsed projects that have their budgets cut after a few years.
SW8 could be a coupe for them to finish off an ok area and make it great, if they follow an existing theme and build on a story other than chucking in another Ip. I'm not expecting anything Disney or Universal but something that is coherent.

Is the film worth a watch? And which version?
I can't get my head around this, especially when it's in between two family areas?

They cant possibly base a ride on pagan sacrifice and druid worship !

I think the original version was really very good, if you're into that kind of thing. Definitely something you should see if you're into your films. Didn't even think about watching the remake as you just know that with things like this it would be awful before having the displeasure of having to watch it.
If it does end up being the theme (which it obviously will now), I hope they build a massive Wicker Man statue and plonk it on the site somewhere. That would be nice.

Mutiny bay in my opinion is a bit rubbish its full of arcades with food outlets everywhere a few decent rides and a sea life centre that is ok. The wicker man theme would be great but I would like to see it integrated into the Katanga canyon style theme maybe with mutiny bay area being used as some form of storage area for the 'katana canyon shipping co'. They could use battle galleons and heave ho to reference pirates taking over the boats that are destined for the lush area of Katanga canyon. SW8 could be integrated into this theme somehow.Mutiny Bay is a bit of a poor-mans area anyway now.
With exception to Battle Galleons and the area around Marauders/Heave Ho, the rest of the area is as it always has been.
Arcade stands, games and fast food kiosks. The entertainment doesn't exist either anymore.
This willl quite clearly revitalise it, no matter what the theme.
My personal opinion is that Alton towers is split into too many separate themed areas. I would like to see bigger areas with cohesive themes that allow the guests to spend a long time on all the rides/experiences in that area rather than going on one or two and then moving onto the next contrasting story.
If they do go with this Wicker man theme I hope its done really well. I'm not familiar with the story.

By the looks of the plans , one of the theming envelopes looks like the right size and shape for a giant wickerman

This theme seems far too dark for a new roller coaster, flat or dark ride at Alton. Has anyone considered that this might be an application that they want to use to create a maze for scarefest.By the looks of the plans , one of the theming envelopes looks like the right size and shape for a giant wickerman

Can't speak for the original but the remake with Cage is God awful.
I'm baffled as well, such a strange IP if they follow down this route. Merlin tend to find the latest trend but The Wicker Man? Nothing trendy about that! All speculation at the moment though.

I don't think Alton are following the IP route with this, the SW's never normally do
Having a wooden voodoo/ritual theme with the rollercoaster through a giant wickerman is probably their 'compelling proposition' or whatever Nick Varney wants as his Merlin sacrifice....
It'll look visually amazing and imposing, I think (hope) the film inspiration is pretty loose, but I reckon the tribal voodoo aspect will perfectly link Mutiny Bay and Katanga Canyon together
That all being said, Merlin never base their coasters around a secretive spooky otherworldly theme so I'm going with the worlds first Nicholas Cage themed rollercoaster

I agree with you I'm thinking it might be used for a scare maze.Has SW8 been formally announced as a family attraction?
I highly doubt the Wicker Man will be used for SW8 regardless. Why would they pay rights for a dated film that most of the clientele wont have heard of anyway.
