[2024] Thorpe Park: Hyperia - Mack Hypercoaster

Define check.

It's unlikely they'd be retorquing each one. Probably just looking to make sure the lines drawn on the bolts are aligned.

The fences are really flimsy. At least once last week I heard the ops came on the pa to ask people not to lean on them

They were repeatedly asking people not to sit, climb etc on my visit.

Can’t blame people for getting tired and frustrated when you’re in a cattle pen for 2-3 hours that barely moves and that was an off peak day.

Perhaps they should not have used black cable ties to reinforce the top sections as well...
And when they did, it would only have taken a full second longer to clip off the excess tie left dandling a full ten inches every couple of yards.
Lovely unfinished rush job look.
Thoosie pick knitting at its finest.
But we did play with them in the slow queue.

Pretty sure those cable ties are just to hold the netting in place.

But... yes, 100% agree it looks crap, and not being clipped short is totally unforgivable. On my second visit, I berated myself for not bringing flush cuts and fixing myself...

Oh yeah, that's a given. Badly installed to begin with, and people leaning on it every day for a few months finally worked it loose.
When it comes to morning inspections, I doubt the staff are doing any more than a quick glance at the fence as they walk past. I wouldn't expect them to push on every single fence panel every morning, any more than I would expect them to check every single bolt every morning.

what... wait... they don't check every bolt every morning?

Managed my first night ride on Hyperia last night. That outerbank was already awesome but in the dark is wild. Could have been at any angle and I wouldn't have known 😂

On the ops front... What most of us presumed is oversold fast-tracks (or most sacking theirs for night rides) absolutely ruined the throughput of the main queue. We only moved forward due to people leaving for a good while.

Other than that fantastic night.

Same issue last week on Friday evening, the main queue barely moved during the evening (took 90 minutes to get round from past the shop to under the lift hill).

Burton on Hyperia

You have to love the passion, but some of what is said annoys me a bit. You can't talk about the absolute completion of a 'level 4 like him' when presenting the most stylistically half arsed product. The way the theme and naming and style and logo have flopped into existence rather than being coherently constructed also makes sense of what we now have. The water splash being a half arsed attempt to fit the theme does make more sense than the theme being a considered effort to fit the water splash that might have originally been intrinsic to the design. It's all a bit backwards and undoubtedly a less complete attraction on the whole as a result.

I like the specific mentions in the article of him going to ride Twisted Colossus and Zadra as part of his research if you will in to what makes a great experience for a ride. I feel like he really wants to bring an RMC to the country if he can. It’s a pity that Hyperia ended up feeling so short in length and underwhelming in its presentation of the area but it will be very interesting to see what his next larger scale coaster will be.

Also we learnt this about the Hyperia name and goddess theme from the article:

“Their Hyperia would be eager for adventure but scared of water”

No wonder the splashdown is off!

It shouldn't take much to convince anyone to bring a RMC to the UK.

There's a lot of waffle in that article. Level 4s were the reason it does the weird turn out the station that has been done a few times before?

Very self indulgent. One of the main things about Wardley was that he tended to let the attractions speak for themselves. But times have changed and subtlety is out the window. More in-jokes and references for the goons!

I really enjoyed that article, very detailed and well researched.

Interesting to see the reason given for why they didn't go for the name Icarus, despite submitting the winged motif to marketing. Not quite telling the truth there! Thank god they didn't go for OMG though.

The whole level 4 thing isn't a great thing to bring up in reference to Hyperia mind. Not much about it comes close to what Burton would call level 4!

Quite. The height record is enough, we don't need to go after worst name record too, Sic can keep that for now.

I think the summit/skiing theme is probably the most interesting there, but would probably have taken some actual (costly) theming to pull off.

What was the real reason why they didn't use "Icarus" ?

The story I heard (from "Making Thorpe Park") was that Merlin was unable to secure the copyright for the name, but John Burton said in this Guardian interview that they had simply decided not to use it?
