Blackpool Pleasure Beach: General Discussion

I have been in Fleetwood today for the Leicester match (the less said about that the better) and heard the news of Mouse going as we were driving down the sea front in Blackpool, just approaching BPB.

I would say I am shocked, and to an extent I am, however this has been strongly rumored for quite a while now and it was always going to be a matter of time.

That does not make it any less saddening though. The Wild Mouse was one of the few coasters I quite liked at Blackpool, it was horrendously "rough" yet so fun. A unique ride that did not deserve to be bulldozed on the quiet.

And therein lies the problem and the root of some of the anger; they seem to not care that they've just demolished such an iconic rollercoaster. Wild Mouse deserved a send off, it should not have been removed with no mention whatsoever. Imagine if Alton Towers just took down Nemesis one closed season without saying a thing, there would be uproar and rightly so.

BPB I'm sure have solid reasons for the removal of Wild Mouse but they have gone about it in such an disrespectful way.

It cannot be pulled down (easily).

That doesn't mean we can't end up with a big pile of rotting wood though !!

Glad my son got to ride the mouse, just like I got to ride the reel with my dad.

Hope they can get a new coaster in the space they are creating but nothing will beat the mouse, not even a £16.5 million investment.

Made a joke earlier, wouldn't be surprised if the headboards in the new hotel were made of Wild Mouse structure.

As far as listing is concerned, the ride structure is listed, and must be maintained, but I'm pretty sure that it can be left SBNO if they choose to do so.

See this is my exact reason for not listing rides.

If the park has come to the conclusion that they can't operate something safely or cost effectively, I think listing it is counter productive because you end up in a situation where the ride will remain standing rusting away which seems ludicrous.
 
I think we should picket outside the park until Mandy herself turns up to apologise.... then when she does, [threat of violence self-censored for obvious legal reasons].

Seriously though, I think the UK coaster enthusiast community needs to band together and let BPB know that this was totally unacceptable. And I'm not talking about some daft facebook page or harrasing her on twitter. I mean good old fashioned activism.

Mack Wild Mouse's are awfully bland. Indeed, I haven't been on any Wild Mouse coaster that has remained in my memory in any way beyond BPB's. Then again I guess if it was between that and a ZacSpin...
 
The number of rollercoasters in the park really has been on a donward trajectory these past few years.

Space Invader, Wild Mouse and Circus Clown all gone and only Icon has come in. In addition to the loss of Noah's Ark and so on.

Perhaps they feel they simply had too many rides?

They're still not short on rides to be honest.

I don't understand your position. Is your suggestion that they have an obligation to run the Mouse irrespective of whether they are able to do it safely or cost effectively?
 
Wild Mouse is a huge loss to the industry, and I'm absolutely gutted to see it go. Whilst new developments are great, the Wild Mouse was truly a one of a kind ride, that can never be recreated in the future. Pleasure Beach have lost a huge part of what made the park so special, and no modern ride can ever replace that.

On a personal level, the Mouse has provided me with many years of fun & laughter and was without question one of my favourite ever coasters; I've never known a ride with such incredibly unrestricted airtime, especially that last drop - brilliant!

One thing I feel is important to mention. Pleasure Beach spent a lot of money on Wild Mouse last year with the installation of the new magnetic brake system, new evacuation walkways, and endless re-tracks/wood replacements throughout the season. It clearly was not their intention, at that time, to remove Wild Mouse in the near future.

With that said, I do not abide with the terrible way the park have handled the closure and demolition of a much-loved ride which holds memories for so many people, it's nothing short of a disgrace the way the ride has been unceremoniously torn down with no initial statement made to appease long standing fans of the ride or the park. In addition, the statement the park have hurriedly released today doesn't even care to mention what a fantastic coaster it was, the history behind it or the legacy it left. It's like they couldn't wait to be rid of it, and really stinks of a park that couldn't care less.
