It's great they aren't messing about with this one. Chessington does seem to be a victim of slow planning.

Are they still waiting for approval for the waterpark and minecraft world? They are probably just grateful to be able to start something and hopefully a 2026 opening is possible.

That council seem to be digging their heels in with the waterpark for some reason. It's not particularly transparent on why it's been delayed for so long.

With the Minecraft, I'd imagine we should get approval any day now although they may postpone decisions without any known reason like with the waterpark.

Wow chessington are not messing around. I do worry that this season the park might feel like a construction site with 2 areas being developed side by side. Lots to look forward to, even though this ultimately looks a little underwhelming in terms of attraction numbers. I do think there needs to be a minimum number of rides needed to call it a world.
 
I'm surprised Wild Asia has gone already, I'll admit... I thought they'd close it in the latter part of this season and build throughout 2026?

Chessington will have quite a notable capacity defecit this season, in that case; it's already a park that struggles with crowds, and I can't imagine that two whole areas vanishing from the equation at once will help with that.

I think it's been suggested that it would have a 2 year development timeline with Wild Asia closing for 2025.

I'm a little bit surprised Merlin went for that although I'm hoping there's a plan for Monkey Swinger and Tuk Tuk Turmoil up their sleeve as they need the capacity of both rides.
 
The planning docs state a 20 month build period. If they are targeting a March 2027 opening then they will need to get started in early July this year.

They have perhaps decided its not worth the effort and expense of getting those rides through annual testing for 3 and a half months worth of operation.

I'm guessing the work in Mexicana won't have any capacity impact per se as the only functioning ride is Rattlesnake and there's no indication that is closing.

I personally think a phased closure might've worked better if it was possible however I think the only ride that would benefit would be Kobra and possibly Jungle Bus.

The other two would've needed to close or be relocated first.
 
You could always add extra entertainment to boost capacity.......... oh wait

I'm already dreading visiting at Easter. Wild Asia was always somewhere a little quieter to go when the crowds have become too much especially with there being a lot more open space in that area.

I do wonder when we will hear what the plan is for the rides they are removing. If there is no where for them to go at chessington, I'm sure Alton might have a few vacant spots for something like monkey swinger or Tuk Tuk Turmoil.
 
As much as this is a nostalgia thing, I am starting to miss the “globe-trotting” element to Chessington. From the closure of Mexicana (mostly) to Wild Asia disappearing, likely to IP’s, I can’t help but feel we’re loosing a bit of cohesion here…?

As much as during 2005-2015 they seemed to love making the place a complete shithole, I did like the exploring theme, and I thought Wild Asia was a fantastic area which was pretty much everything I loved about that idea. Ultimately, this is probably me remembering really liking the idea of exploring and adventuring as a younger kid. Bar the kids zoo and land of the dragons, everything seemed to fit in quite nicely, with adventure point fitting as a nice centrepiece if you will.

I just think with all this new expansion I’d prefer an original land based on some ancient thing. An Ancient Rome Land would kick ass, but I guess Minecraft will do wonders in the marketing. Despite how much I played Minecraft when I little(r), and I would probably nag my parents more than usual to go - in hindsight I still think it would probably be better for kids imaginations to see something new than a homogenised IP area. Certainly world give them something a little more to think about, I think..

Just don’t want it to turn into Chessington: Adventure World but with naff IP’s like Jumanji.

I've got a couple of ideas on sites that could be possible but it'll need some work I'd say. They are both around the Adventure Point area.

Site 1: Elmer's Flying Jumbos and the Pay per Ride Car Track opposite - I would say that this could compactly fit both Monkey Swinger and Tuk Tuk Turmoil however I'd say the pavements will need to change. The only thing is that I believe Elmer may be planned to operate in 2025 so it'd likely be the Car Track which would only fit the Dodgems.

Site 2: Former Creepy Caves site - this will only fit one of the rides however I'd say this would be fantastic for either ride. It could be an extension of Shipwreck Coast.

I'm very much of the idea that Elmer's Flying Jumbos should be replaced in the future either like for like with a newer model or with something else. I'm surprised a replacement wasn't part of Project Play to be honest.
